A Night of Desire-Chapter 180: Establishing a United Front
Sienna Hale stepped forward and took her hand frankly. "How about this? Theodore and I are a few years older than you. Since you call Theodore ’Brother Quinn,’ you can just call me Sister Sienna as well."
"Yes, Auntie, let’s go with that. It sounds much friendlier, and we’re all family now," Jenna Quinn added quickly with a smile.
Theodore Quinn didn’t say anything, but he nodded in agreement. Though he remained as stoic as ever, his expression softened slightly.
’When meeting my son’s mother-in-law, I can’t be too stern, or she might think I’m disrespecting her.’
Seeing this, Skylar Hayes no longer demurred. She smiled and said, "Brother Quinn, Sister Sienna, I’ll call you that from now on, then. My name is Skylar Hayes. Please, just call me Skylar."
"Of course, of course. Skylar, please, have a seat." Before meeting Skylar Hayes, Sienna Hale had been a little worried. She was afraid Skylar would be like Cedric Grant’s current wife, Jean Jarvis—mercenary, cruel, and the type to kiss up to her superiors while kicking down at her inferiors.
Even though she had married Cedric Grant and dressed with the air of a wealthy socialite, the moment she opened her mouth, her lack of refinement was laid bare.
Skylar Hayes, however, was the complete opposite of Jean Jarvis. Though her clothes were simple, she exuded an elegant, feminine grace from head to toe.
Therefore, Sienna Hale had an extremely good impression of Skylar Hayes.
’What on earth was that Cedric Grant thinking? Letting a wonderful woman like Skylar Hayes go, only to divorce her and marry that Jean Jarvis!’
’He must be blind!’
Skylar Hayes let Sienna pull her down to sit, feeling quite happy herself. Seth Quinn’s parents were so friendly toward her that despite it being their first meeting, it wasn’t the least bit awkward. The atmosphere was wonderful.
’It looks like Clara won’t be mistreated after marrying into the Quinn Family. That’s a relief.’
"Sister Sienna, I’m so sorry to impose today. It’s mainly because Clara misses Cherie, so I had no choice..."
Skylar Hayes began, her tone slightly apologetic, but Sienna Hale cut her off before she could finish. "Impose? What imposition? If that brat Seth hadn’t come up with such a rotten idea, you wouldn’t be in this difficult position."
"But, Skylar, since the lie has already been told, let’s keep it from Clara for now. Otherwise, what will we do if she finds out the truth, gets angry, and insists on divorcing Seth?"
"We’re both mothers. Neither of us wants to see our children get divorced right after getting married, right? What do you think?"
Sienna Hale said this because she was afraid Skylar Hayes would be resentful that her son had used "despicable" means to trick Clara into marriage. So, she made a preemptive move, stating her position clearly and laying out the stakes.
No matter what, divorce always has the biggest impact on the woman. She believed Skylar Hayes wouldn’t want her own daughter to get divorced, either.
’Besides, that brat Seth told me a long time ago that his biggest fear is Clara divorcing him. What else could I do? For my son’s sake, I have to get his mother-in-law on my side.’
’And even though I haven’t met my daughter-in-law yet, they say ’like mother, like daughter.’ Judging by Skylar Hayes alone, Clara Grant can’t be anything less than wonderful.’
"Of course I don’t want them to divorce either, which is why I’m helping Seth keep this from Clara. But I’m also doing this because I can see that Seth is sincere in his feelings for Clara. I’m cooperating with him because I trust him."
"So, since things have already come to this, let’s just manage the situation for now. As for what happens later, we’ll leave it to Seth to handle and explain. We have to trust that he can sort it out."
And just like that, in a matter of a few sentences, the two families had reached a consensus. They established a united front with a common goal: to work together to "manage" Clara Grant and preserve her marriage to Seth Quinn.
