Chapter 62: How Did You Collect So Much Wood?

Serena paused at the words, almost frowning. How had Theo managed to get that much wood in half a day? Did he get some help while chopping wood? Because she doubted he could do it all by himself.

It had taken the two of them working together to get all the firewood bundles collected and they took a few breaks in between. Unless Theo didn’t take breaks and was overworking him.

No, he wouldn’t do that. Someone or maybe a few people helped out. The beastmen in the village tended to do that which was a little bit of a shock for her.

Maybe it was because the original owner’s tribe hadn’t been as good as this one. Sure, there were some good members of the tribe, like Trix and Rebecca, but a lot were selfish.

Speaking of which, she wondered how those two beastwomen were doing. They probably would’ve reached the Forest City by now and Richard would’ve gotten Theo’s message.

Serena did hope they were doing well and got good mates. They deserved it after everything.

"Sister." Kiro suddenly tugged at her arm, pulling her back to reality. "I’m hungry!"

Serena glanced down at the cub and replied, "We’ll go home soon. Just let me get these furs."

There was no point waiting around for the furs to dry here. She’d just hang them up outside her hut. Besides, she wanted to find out how in the hell Theo got all that work done.

Once she got all the damp furs, Serena and Kiro headed back to the village, parting ways with the others. She went straight to her hut and found Theo here, roasting something on a fire.

He noticed them approaching too and called out, "Food’s nearly done. You done with all the washing?"

"Yes." Serena nodded her head, holding up the damp furs. "These need to dry a bit longer though."

"Hang them on the south side, so the smoke doesn’t get to them." Theo responded. "I would help but..."

He held up his hands which had a bit of the meat juices on them. Serena didn’t mind him not helping either way since he also needed to focus on making lunch.

Kiro stayed by Theo’s side, hungrily gazing at the roasting meat. He was probably starving after all that running about he did earlier this morning.

Serena quickly went to hang up the damp clothes, stopping inside the hut to put her basket down. Once she was done, she headed back to the front of the hut where Theo was handing Kiro a small piece of meat.

"When did you get time to hunt?" Serena asked, glancing at the new tanning fur some distance away.

"Went some time ago since I finished up earlier than expected." Theo answered, grabbing some meat for her. "Elder Samuel had a few help me bring back all the wood while I chopped some logs for them. Believe they’re using it for the wall."

"Did something happen?" Serena asked curiously, taking the meat Theo handed her before thanking him.

The wooden wall, while not the strongest, was their first line of defense against any attacks. And with the cold season coming soon, attacks from rootless beastmen were going to be on the rise.

Having to do repairs on the wall didn’t sound good. It made her worry a little, wondering if there had been a secret attack that they didn’t know about.

Perhaps, she should have a chat to Elder Samuel about adding more defenses to the village. She knew they were purposely trying to make the village look rundown to decrease the chances of being raided.

However, that would only get them so far because one day the village would be attacked by beastmen desperate enough to try anything and those kinds of beastmen were the most dangerous.

Because they had nothing to lose.

"He said it was just some regular repairs they do before the cold season." Theo explained calmly, grabbing some meat for himself. "Some of the wood is getting old, so they’re replacing it... Oh and Elder Samuel showed me a tree resin that he recommended we add to the coop. Said it would stop the wood from rotting so quickly."

Serena felt a wave of relief hit her at those words. So, it was just regular maintenance then. That was good to hear. At least they were making sure the walls were in tip top space.

As for the resin part, she wasn’t sure what to say about it. But if Elder Samuel recommended it then she supposed they should cover their coop with it. Not having to replace the wood so regularly would be nice.

"Have you gotten it yet?" Serena asked before eating her piece of meat. "Or do we still need to get it and the other materials for the coop?"

"We’ll still need to get it." Theo replied. "I planned to collect it after lunch along with a few other things. Do you want to come along too?"

"Of course." Serena nodded her head.

She wanted to see what this resin was and how to collect it. Perhaps they could also put it on their ladder so it wouldn’t rot so easily. Speaking of which...

"Has the ladder been repaired yet?" Serena asked. "I think she should add some of that resin to it to help prevent the wood from rotting."

"I haven’t repaired it yet, but you make a good point." Theo mused. "Only thing is that the resin will take a few days to dry out. We won’t be able to use the ladder until it dries."

In other words they couldn’t head down into the underground part of the hut. Still, that might as well get it done anyway. Otherwise, they would be replacing that ladder quite frequently.

"It’s fine." Serena finally replied. "We can just store everything in the hut for now and take it underground once the ladder is done."

Theo nodded his head in understanding. "Alright that works too."
