A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 126: Names
Once Serena returned from her meeting with the Council, she went looking for Theo. The meeting had been quite fruitful and Finn had agreed to help her out with her grinder project.
Meaning that was one headache out of the way.
The rabbit beastman was practically a genius when it came to using his hands. At least in her eyes anyway. He got the beehive design perfectly despite only having dirt drawings and her words for reference.
Granted they mostly used wood and some sticky sap, but it was still well crafted. Especially with how limiting their tools were. She wondered what he could do with metal tools.
Though that was a pipeline dream for now. She’d need to find metal, iron ore specifically, and process it first before she even thought of making tools.
Still, she had high hopes.
Finn carved almost all the stone tools used by the rabbit beastmen, so he was way more experienced at dealing with stone than she was. He could probably do a better job than her in less time.
Serena searched around the hut for Theo, but couldn’t find him anyway. Thus it left her with one option - the underground area. A perfect spot to corner that tiger.
Something was going on with that beastman and she wanted to know exactly what. Because she was not in the mood to deal with any more drama.
The Beast God had given her enough yesterday and just the thought of him had her rubbing her forehead in annoyance. She had yet to fully deal with that issue.
Especially the new mission part.
She was still on the fence with it, her messed up morals fighting over whether she should agree to it or not. If only she could decline it like any other mission.
Serena headed down the ladder, stopping halfway as she spotted Theo, who was about to come back up. He went still at the sight of her.
"Serena... What are you doing here?" Theo asked cautiously, avoiding eye contact.
"I was looking for you." Serena stated, shifting her body so she could properly look at him. "We need to talk."
Theo scratched his head. "About what?"
"You’re avoiding me for some reason." Serena stated. "I want to know why."
"I’m not avoiding you... Just trying to give you some space." Theo lied. "I don’t want you to feel like you need to reject other beastmen to keep up our relationship."
He was talking out of his ass, but he couldn’t exactly tell her the truth either. That would make things even more awkward if it didn’t destroy what they had going.
Serena pursed her lips, quiet as she mulled over his words. She could understand where he was coming from, but she felt this wasn’t everything. Something was missing.
"Fine I’ll believe you this once." Serena finally sighed, deciding not to push it. She was quiet for a moment before she added, "Just so you know, I’m not interested in changing our relationship any time soon. I quite like how we have things righ-"
"Sister!" Kiro suddenly called out, interrupting her. "Where are you?"
Serena quickly moved to get up the ladder, poking her head out as she responded, "Inside the hut."
The cub ran over to her and asked, "Can I show my friends the wild birds?"
Serena frowned, wondering where this was suddenly coming from. Still, at least he was asking her first. It would’ve been troublesome if the cubs had gone to the coop without permission.
The wild birds were much calmer in the presence now, but that didn’t mean they were used to everything. Especially the one bird. It could easily scare the cubs or worse maim them if they weren’t careful.
"Please!" Kiro begged as Serena pulled herself up with Theo following closely behind her.
"I guess it won’t hurt..." Serena pursed her lips. "But we have to have some rules in place first."
She rather have the cubs looking at the birds with her around to manage them than have them sneaking around to see them. Because that was just a disaster waiting to happen.
"Yes!" Kiro exclaimed before running back out.
Serena silently followed him, spotting three rabbit beastmen cubs a few meters away. They all were glancing around them nervously as Kiro ran over to them to tell them the good news.
When they spotted Serena and Theo, one let out a squeak of surprise while the other two moved closer to Kiro, almost hiding behind him. Guess they were not used to seeing predator type beastmen.
Theo walked off, deciding that seeing him was enough for the cubs. He didn’t need to make them anxious in his presence. That might ruin things for Kiro.
"I heard you all wanted to see the wild birds we have." Serena mused when she got to the cubs.
They nodded their heads with one of them nervously answering, "Yes..."
Serena gave them a small smile and said, "Alright, but I have some rules. You’ll stay close to me and walk slowly. The wild birds can sometimes get scared easily... So no grabbing them either or going near their coop."
The cubs all nodded their heads in understanding and with that Serena led them to the garden. She stopped at the entrance, giving the cubs a view of the birds without them getting too close to them.
One of the wild birds immediately spotted them and as usual let out a squawk before running off to the coop. Meanwhile, the other two were wandering around the garden, pecking at the garden beds.
They looked up to see what the other one was squawking about before returning back to pecking the ground. The cubs excitedly looked at the birds, sometimes asking Kiro questions about them.
Suddenly one of the cubs asked Kiro, "What are the wild birds’ names?"
Serena paused at the question, wondering how she was going to explain to the cubs that the birds didn’t have any names. But before she could do that, Kiro spoke up.
"Those two are called Wendy and Beth." Kiro answered, pointing at the birds pecking the garden bed. Then he pointed at the bird by the coop and added, "And that one’s Sarah because it’s mean."
Serena gaped at the cub, not knowing what to say or think at his words.
