A New Life In The Beast World-Chapter 125: The Beehive
When Serena got to the Council hut, she found that Finn was already there with their newly made beehive, explaining how it worked to Council members. The design itself was a pretty simple one, even if it looked on the rougher side.
But that was mainly because they were limited in terms of carpentry tools and couldn’t make perfectly straight wooden planks. Still, at least they were able to make a rectangular box with a removable top and bottom.
One side also had a square shaped entrance for the bees to easily move in and out of the hive. It could hold eight frames inside it which was pretty normal for beehives.
At least according to her book.
"Ah Serena, there you are!" Emelia called out as she stopped in front of them. "Finn was just explaining the structure to us. I must say, this is quite an interesting design."
"It is, but it’s the best we could come up with." Serena said before adding in her head, At least with the limited tools and resources we have.
There was a massive risk of this failing due to various factors, but she supposed they could work from there. And maybe try in the hot season. That was when the bees were most active.
"Are you going to remove the bees now?" Elder Samuel asked.
"No, it’s best we do it tomorrow." Finn answered. "Some of the frames haven’t fully dried yet and we’ll need them to be dry before placing the combs between the wood."
"I see..." Elder Samuel nodded in understanding. "I’ll have one of the beastmen come to help then."
"Please make sure it’s someone with delicate hands." Serena pointed out. "They’ll need to cut into the hive and tie the combs between the wood with vines. Also someone who isn’t easily scared of bees as they may need to handle them."
Such as searching for the queen bee, not that that would be easy. Of course, if they didn’t find the queen bee, then they would likely need to scoop up bees and begin shaking them into the new hive.
Once the queen bee was inside the new hive, the other bees would start swarming in search of her. That was the part she was a little worried about.
If they had someone who panicked while the bees were swarming and settling into the new hive, it could get messy. Granted, the person doing this was likely going to have to scoop up bees too to add them to the new hive.
Which wasn’t an easy task either.
Honestly, she preferred to do it herself since it would be easier to control things that way, but she doubted anyone would let her near the beehive. Even now the Council was a bit wary of a beastman doing this.
Let alone her. She was not about to let this hard earned yes become a no.
They went over details for the removal and new place to add the beehive. After some debating, it was decided that the beehive would be placed on the south side just outside the village.
That way cubs wouldn’t accidentally run into it and get hurt and the bees would act like a natural defense, keeping would-be raiders away from the village walls in fear of getting stung.
Granted that part wasn’t foolproof. Desperation made people do crazy things. Serena knew that all too well.
Once the new beehive was placed by the south side walls, it would be left alone for the cold season. Serena originally wanted to harvest some honey and wax for her jam experiments, but after reading a bit, she decided not to.
After all, honey was the bees’ food and they needed every possible drop to survive the cold season. Otherwise, she’d lose this colony. Once it was the rainy season, Serena could look into harvesting any excess. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
But for now, she just wanted to move the bees and get them settled.
After they were done going over tomorrow’s removal plan, Emelia clapped her hands together and exclaimed, "Now that that’s out of the way, let’s move onto that other project of yours."
It took Serena a moment to realize what the older beastwoman was talking about. "Oh right, the grinder."
She had spoken to the Council about plants, trying to figure out which ones would work best as a food supply. She also explained her grinder idea and they seemed interested in the idea of turning wheat into flour to make other foods.
Mainly because wheat could be stored for long periods of time meaning they could create food reserves. And having food reserves, especially as herbivore type beastmen, was their number one goal.
It would greatly reduce famine during the cold season when plants were less available.
"That’s still a work in progress." Serena sighed. "I haven’t really managed to get it right yet."
Not that she had done much work on it recently. She still had some rock that had yet to be carved into shape. Right next to all the failed attempts.
"Are you building something else?" Finn asked curiously.
While he wasn’t fully confident in his building skills, still having much to learn, he was quite intrigued by this grinder thing. Especially if it was another building project.
The beehive that he had built from Serena’s ideas had been quite fun for him, even if it was a little challenging. After all, he rarely got a chance to test out his skills on new ideas.
He was mostly stuck with doing repairs or making someone a new tool based on a design he had perfected ages ago. Besides, his mother wouldn’t talk about other council matters in front of him if they didn’t need his help with something.
Council matters were a delicate matter that wasn’t shared with anyone unless needed.
Serena turned to him and nodded her head. "Yes. I’m trying to build a device to crush wheat berries into a powder. That way we can try making other foods"
