Chapter 64: Clearly Laid Plans

Early the next morning, Xu Mumu got up, and by the time she was up, it was still quite early. Several children were already up waiting for her.

During this period, Xu Mumu took them running, and each of them looked much healthier.

However, Xu Mumu did hear her fourth aunt complain several times, saying that the two kids were eating more and more.

"Today, just like before, we’ll run two laps around the foot of the mountain," Xu Mumu said with a smile.

The big mountain behind the brigade was so large that it was impossible to run around it, so they could only run two laps at the foot of the mountain near the village.

"Big sister, I can run faster than my brother now," Xu Jiaojiao said proudly as she ran. Everyone in the family, except when it came to Xu Mumu, favored the boys, so even if the little girl didn’t say anything, she was still very competitive.

Hearing Xu Jiaojiao’s words, Xu Tao was a bit unhappy, "That’s because I let you win."

"That’s not true. It’s because you can’t run faster than me." The little girl proudly raised her head. Now she had a new goal; she wanted to be as capable as her big sister in the future.

"Alright, stop arguing. Once we have time, why don’t you compete and find out? Keep your breathing steady while running, don’t talk," Xu Mumu said helplessly.

She didn’t know what had happened to little Xu Jiaojiao. She used to be a timid and weak girl. Now, Xu Jiaojiao had changed quite a bit, becoming more cheerful, ambitious, and she wanted to surpass her brothers in everything, from studies to other activities.

What Xu Mumu didn’t realize was that she played a significant role in Xu Jiaojiao’s change.

Because she taught the kids, she inevitably instilled her thoughts into them. As Xu Mumu’s temperament changed, Xu Jiaojiao grew increasingly close to her, admiring her more and more, and tried hard to emulate her big sister.

"Big sister, I’ll definitely be able to surpass my brother then," Xu Jiaojiao said, glancing at her brother. Competing with her brother was boring; it was better to learn more from her big sister.

At this point, Xu Tao breathed a small sigh of relief. It’s a good thing they weren’t going to compete right away, there was still some time. He would secretly practice; losing to his sister would be too embarrassing, and he definitely couldn’t lose.

The little guy secretly encouraged himself, not knowing that his sister wasn’t even taking the race seriously; she was focused on learning from their big sister.

The little girl was still young, but she was smart and knew how to imitate what she saw. The things Xu Mumu did, Xu Jiaojiao could imitate quite well, though there were still some things she wasn’t as good at.

After running two laps, they returned home to find breakfast ready. Xu Minghui was leisurely leaning against the plum tree in the yard, holding a bowl of breakfast.

Today’s breakfast was gnocchi soup; there was no white flour, only coarse grains.

Lately, Xu Mumu had gotten somewhat used to the taste of these coarse grains; apart from the lack of flavor, they weren’t too bad.

Xu Mumu wanted to take over the cooking at home, but neither Madam Chen nor Li Caixia was willing to let her. Given her wasteful ways, the family’s oil and salt couldn’t withstand her use. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

As for Li Caixia, she was even more straightforward; her daughter was meant to marry into the city and enjoy life, so how could she do these chores? These menial tasks were meant to be done by others; her daughter should be pampered.

"Brother, can you sit up straight?" Xu Mumu said, annoyed, seeing Xu Minghui’s lazy posture. Watching her brother act like this every day made her patience wear thin.

Honestly, she really wanted to give Xu Minghui a good talking-to. His slovenly manner was just irritating.

"I’m sitting straight," Xu Minghui said calmly.

"I mean sit properly. You look decent, and if you sat upright, there’d be plenty of girls who’d like you." Xu Mumu took a deep breath and shifted her gaze from Xu Minghui to her own bowl.

Not only were Li Caixia and Xu Hai worried about Xu Minghui’s marriage, but so were their grandparents. Yet Xu Minghui himself seemed utterly unconcerned.

"According to you, they only like me for my looks. Besides, what’s the rush to get married? I can’t even support myself, so why would I want a wife and kids?" Xu Minghui said, pursing his lips. He didn’t think he was old at nineteen. Before marrying, he wanted to build connections and see if he could get a temporary job in the county.

He believed that with a position, he could climb the ranks based on his abilities.

"Why don’t you show some ambition then?" Xu Mumu rolled her eyes at Xu Minghui. If she were looking for a man, she’d definitely avoid one like Xu Minghui. With his lazy demeanor, if he married, all the household chores would probably fall on the wife.

In fact, that was a certainty. Knowing her mother well, she would definitely want to find an honest girl for her brother, and she’d certainly want to wield her authority as the mother-in-law.

At this moment, Xu Mumu felt a bit expectant, hoping her future sister-in-law would be a formidable one, capable of keeping her brother in check and, hopefully, her mother too.

Truth be told, reforming her own mother was challenging and might be beyond her capabilities.

As Xu Minghui blissfully ate his breakfast, he suddenly felt a chill on his back. Who was cursing him behind his back?

He looked up and around but saw nothing. Maybe he was mistaken?

The more she thought about it, the better the idea seemed. Xu Mumu decided to observe quietly and see which girl was both capable and kind. If she found one, she’d recruit her to be her future sister-in-law.

Xu Minghui had no idea that his future had been planned out so clearly by Xu Mumu.

After breakfast, Xu Mumu took the kids up the mountain, while Xu Minghui and Xu Hai went to work. These days it was time to start digging paddy fields and preparing seedlings. Soon, they’d be busy again.

"Sis, can we go hunting rabbits today?" Tiedan asked expectantly, looking at Xu Mumu.

"There aren’t that many rabbits on the mountain for you to hunt," Xu Mumu said with a smile. Now, many families didn’t have enough to eat and often went to the mountain. There were quite a few people catching wild game, so it wasn’t possible to catch something every time.
