Chapter 116: End-of-Term

The final exam questions weren’t difficult this time around, after a few exams, Xu Mumu felt confident, and she had a pretty good idea of how well Du Yu might have done.

"Mumu, I feel like I did well this time." Du Yu said excitedly.

"Really? Then I’ll congratulate you in advance." Xu Mumu said with a smile. Du Yu doing well was also a validation of her tutoring efforts.

During this period, she had found quite a few questions for Du Yu to work on, all typical reminders, and even some that appeared on the actual test. If Du Yu couldn’t do them, she’d be the first to put him in his place.

"Let’s compare answers, it’ll make me happy." Du Yu looked at Xu Mumu expectantly.

"No way, you’ll find out the scores when the report cards come out in a few days." Xu Mumu refused directly, she didn’t like comparing answers, everything was already set in stone.

"Oh, come on, I want to know." Du Yu looked at Xu Mumu, coaxing her.

"No, we have to do a big clean-up. I’ll go get the broom." Shooting Du Yu a sideways glance, Xu Mumu promptly went to get the broom and started cleaning.

The classroom wasn’t big, when everyone pitched in, it was quickly scrubbed clean. The homeroom teacher, Mr. Liu, said a few words and then dismissed them.

You’ll have to wait until a week later to get the exam results, they’ll be handed out along with the report cards.

With the holiday officially starting, Xu Mumu was in a good mood. She took some money and went to the recycling center, picking out a pile of books to bring back home. These books were for the kids at home to use. She even found a book of essays, to take back for them to read and improve their writing skills.

When she got home, the kids were still playing in the yard. Upon seeing Xu Mumu return, they all ran over to take the things from her hands.

"Big sis, why did you buy so many books again? Your room already has so many." Xu Jiaojiao particularly admired her big sister. Her big sister knew so many things and had read so many books.

"These are all specifically bought for you guys. There are elementary school textbooks and exercise books, and also the essay book you’ve been wanting." Xu Mumu said with a smile.

Upon hearing Xu Mumu’s words, Xu Jiaojiao quickly started flipping through the books.

In Xu Mumu’s room, there was a small bookshelf that her dad, Xu Hai, had helped build. There were trees all over the mountain; making a simple shelf was something he could handle. So, her room now had a bookshelf.

The bookshelf was filled with study materials that she had scavenged from the recycling station, all of which were treasures to her.

The kids had been on break for a few days, and during these days, Xu Mumu hadn’t given them any tasks. They were all just playing. After studying for such a long time, Xu Mumu decided to let the kids relax a bit.

The house was getting hotter and hotter, and at night, Xu Mumu was restless from the heat. The weather felt muggy, it seemed like it was going to rain.

The room was very quiet, and at times like this, Xu Mumu particularly missed modern air conditioners and fans.

However, their team hadn’t even been connected to electricity, and who knows when it would be. Air conditioners and fans were just wishful thinking.

She pulled the paper fan off the bedside cabinet. There were only two of these in the house: one in her grandparents’ room and one in her room.

As she fanned herself, Xu Mumu felt a bit more comfortable.

Unable to sleep, Xu Mumu started thinking about the plans for the summer vacation. She wouldn’t have to tutor Du Yu now, so she’d tutor a few of the little ones at home, and she couldn’t neglect her writing submissions either.

Recently, she had made dozens of yuan from submitting articles, and she was quite pleased with the outcome.

If only she had the opportunity, she’d want to do English translation work. Her English was good, and she had also learned some French, German, and Russian. Doing those translations would certainly earn more than writing submissions, but she couldn’t find any opportunity.

Moreover, the kids’ English speaking skills should be properly practiced too.

Thinking about all these random things, Xu Mumu drifted off to sleep. Perhaps because she was thinking of so much before bed, she even dreamt that night.

In her dream, she was surrounded by a pile of books, and a few little kids were watching her being surrounded by books, laughing gloatingly by the side.

Xu Mumu woke up from the heat. In the morning, it was already raining outside, but the weather was still muggy.

Looking out the window, it was still quite early, but Xu Mumu got up anyway and went to the kitchen to boil some water. Having sweated the whole night, she felt a bit uncomfortable.

"Mumu, why up so early? It’s a holiday, sleep a bit more." Seeing Xu Mumu boiling water, Madam Chen wanted to take over the task.

"I couldn’t sleep, Grandma, go rest. I’ll make breakfast." Xu Mumu said with a smile. After she washed up, she would make breakfast. With the rain getting heavier, there was certainly no going out to work. Eating breakfast a bit later wouldn’t matter.

"I’ll do it. Don’t dirty your clothes or anything." Madam Chen said with a smile. Xu Mumu was very tidy, almost bathing every day and changing clothes daily.

She was somewhat of a germaphobe, keeping the house spotless. Xu Mumu rarely did household chores; everyone doted on her, and she didn’t want her to do those things either.

"It’s fine, Grandma. Did your rooms leak from the rain?" Although the roof was fixed before, their house had been repaired for so many years, and the straw on the rooftop had decomposed quite a bit.

"No, your dad climbed up before and replaced the leaky spots with new straw." Madam Chen said with a smile.

"As long as it’s fine." Xu Mumu nodded. The water in the pot heated up, and Xu Mumu filled a bucket to bring back to her room.

When Xu Mumu came out after washing up, Madam Chen had almost finished cooking the porridge.

Now there was no shortage of food at home. The sweet potato porridge even had peeled sweet potatoes in it. For this family, it was already a significant improvement.

Xu Mumu, feeling a bit helpless, found that Grandma had already made the porridge, so she went to the pickle jar and grabbed a handful of pickled vegetables.

The pickled vegetables were chopped into small pieces, with a little sesame oil and other seasonings added, making it taste better.

Before, Xu Mumu would eat the pickled veggies directly, but after Madam Chen made it like this once, she found it tastier and occasionally prepared it this way.

Soon, the whole family got up, all because Xu Mumu had prepared some pickled veggies, and Madam Chen praised her excessively.

The praise made Xu Mumu a bit embarrassed, for such a small matter, it really wasn’t necessary.

With the rain outside, there wasn’t an option to go out and play, so Xu Mumu took the opportunity to read with the kids. Knowing that she was going to teach them, Madam Chen even asked Xu Hai and his wife to go back to their room to talk, so they wouldn’t disturb the grandchildren’s study.

The elderly couple didn’t return to their room but stayed to watch; they found it interesting to see the little ones reading.
