Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1163 - 1158: Don’t You Think Second Uncle Cares Too Much About Mom?
"Ha, there are plenty of people in the Lancaster Family who have already embarrassed us!" Joseph Lancaster said, and Evander Lancaster let out a snort, his words dripping with sarcasm.
Their mother, Violet Zimmerman, suddenly turned her head to look over from the double sofa beside him.
On the opposite sofa, Joseph Lancaster choked, his hands on the armrests tensed up. Although his face was full of displeasure, he said nothing.
Robert Lancaster glanced at his mother, then at his "second uncle," and said with a smile, "Evander, what nonsense are you talking? Who’s embarrassing the Lancaster Family?"
Before Robert could finish, Evander interrupted with another sneer, implying, "Our mom is the matriarch of the Lancaster Family; she knows better than anyone what anyone has done."
Joseph instinctively looked at Violet, who bit her lip tightly, her face turning pallid, her breathing rapid, as if she was struggling to suppress something.
Robert proactively grabbed his mother’s hand, trying to comfort her, and Violet instinctively gripped it tightly.
Even though Evander didn’t make things explicit, they all knew in their hearts, especially with that obvious disdain in his eyes, like a sharp dagger stabbing into Violet’s heart, showing no mercy, reopening her slowly healing wound, letting the humiliating blood flow freely.
The humiliating scene from thirty years ago unconsciously resurfaced. That man looked down at her, coldly saying, "If you don’t get involved with Joseph, I’ll find a few more men for you tomorrow! I don’t believe that having them serve you every day won’t get you pregnant!"
Recalling that scene, Violet’s shoulders visibly trembled.
"Mom, it’s all in the past," Robert gently comforted her, squeezing her hand and wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
Joseph saw Violet’s reaction, felt heartbroken, and wanted to comfort her, but restrained himself because Evander was there too, maintaining a certain distance. When he looked back at Evander, his eyes showed clear displeasure as he spoke with a stern, reproachful tone. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"Evander! You’re not a child anymore! Don’t you know what should and shouldn’t be said? This is just between me and your brother; if other family members hear about it, what will they think? Won’t those with bad intentions seize the opportunity to use this as an excuse?"
Evander also noticed Violet’s reaction. He sighed and stood up from the single sofa, sat down on the other side of Violet, grabbing hold of her hand and placing an arm around her shoulder. "Mom, look at you, I was just joking, is it worth getting this upset?"
Evander gently patted the back of his mother’s hand. "Don’t be mad, okay? It’s all my fault; because I can’t control my tongue, I’ve been living outside, so you don’t have to see or be bothered by it."
Violet let out a long breath and sighed, "Evander, some things aren’t as they seem on the surface."
After saying this, she pulled her hand back and stood up. "I’m tired, going back to my room to rest for a while. You two brothers can continue chatting."
Watching Violet’s frail figure retreating, Joseph felt a pang in his heart. Ignoring the fact that his "nephew" Evander was still there, he got up and followed her, grabbing Violet’s arm with one hand and supporting her waist with the other, helping her up the stairs.
As their figures disappeared upstairs, Evander withdrew his gaze and turned to his brother, casually asking, "Brother, don’t you think Uncle is a bit too concerned about Mom?"
