Help! Five Beast Alphas Want To Breed Me!!(BL) - Chapter 323: The Fool Who Looks Away
Rhydian;
I don’t hate many things instinctively... Contrary to what my past may have made people believe, that was never the truth.
Most of my anger is earned. Earned through years of watching people lie prettily, smile while sharpening knives, all while calling it diplomacy. I’ve learned the difference between dislike, irritation, and real hatred.
But this?
This is none of those. This is something deeper.
Something that crawls up my spine each time Alana enters a room.
She doesn’t do anything wrong, and that’s honestly the worst part.
She’s polite, helpful, and soft-spoken as always.
She bows when she should, speaks when spoken to, and keeps her eyes lowered in the way people expect from a maid. She does the things she’s always done, and yet every time she comes near me, my body reacts like it’s bracing for a blow I can’t see coming.
It makes my jaw lock... Makes my hands itch... Makes something sour and familiar coil in my gut.
Her presence, for some reason, has started reminding me of him.
Bram.
I don’t know why that name rings so sharply in my mind every time she’s around, but it does.
The resemblance isn’t physical. It’s not her voice, or her face, or even her scent or demeanour.
It’s the feeling.
That quiet pressure. That sense of something hidden behind obedience. Something watching... Measuring.
Waiting...
I grit my teeth as she approaches me again at the site where I’m working with others, carrying a basket of freshly plucked fruits.
"Alpha Rhydian," she says gently, as if saying my name softly enough will smooth the edges off it.
"Alpha Koda asked if you need these—" She begins, but my irritation flares.
"No," I cut in immediately. "I don’t," I reply, and her steps falter.
"Oh. I thought—" She begins, and I sigh as I look away from her.
"You thought wrong."
The words come out sharper than necessary. I know it. I hear the way a few nearby heads turn. I feel the shift in the air as witnesses file this away for later gossip.
Alana lowers her head.
"I apologise. I was only trying to help." She whispers, and I laugh under my breath. It’s not amused.
"Keep your help for those who want it," I reply as I glare at her.
Her fingers tighten around the basket for a second, and something flashes across her face before it smooths again.
Something cold.
There! That!!
My stomach twists as the disgust and distrust begin to crawl up my throat this time.
"You don’t need to help me," I continue flatly, and she hesitates, then nods.
"As you wish."
She turns and walks away, steps light, posture composed... but still somehow wrong. For some reason, a part of me has this wild idea that that person is not Alana.
If father were here, it would be much easier to know!!
Behind me, someone mutters,
"Who knew he was so rude? I thought he’d changed for the better..."
Another voice answers, "He’s being unfair. The girl’s done nothing wrong, and he’s been mean to her since she came back. What’s his deal?"
I don’t turn around. They’re right... But that doesn’t change a damn thing.
This agitating feeling keeps happening.
Every corridor. Every shared space. Every time she’s assigned to assist me, or help organise something near me, or simply exists too close for comfort... I get annoyed.
It had never happened before. And I don’t even know if I’m right or just... paranoid.
Bram still hasn’t been fucking found. There’s no trace of him, but how the hell could he become Alana??
The thought of it alone makes my head hurt.
And Alana? She keeps trying to make peace.
She brings tea I didn’t ask for. Offers help I didn’t request. Stands just a little too close, eyes constantly darting up to my face like she’s gauging my mood.
And every damn time, my skin crawls harder, and I snap at her.
By the third day, the whispers are louder.
Rhydian’s temper is getting worse.
Rhydian’s taking out his mood on a harmless omega.
Rhydian needs to apologise.
By the fourth day, Koda corners me while I’m alone in the castle’s study.
He doesn’t raise his voice. He never does when it matters.
My gaze is on a book I’m pretending to read, but I can feel his eyes boring holes through me.
"You’re avoiding her," he finally breaks the silence, and I don’t need a guide to know who he’s talking about, so I snort.
"I’m doing more than that," I reply, and he nods.
"Yes. You are." He agrees, but I remain silent.
He studies me for a long moment, then sighs.
"Why? Why are you being so... different with her? You used to treat her ike family. You once told me you were grateful to her for saving yours and Elian’s lives... So, what’s changed now?" Koda interrogates, and I look up at him for a second.
These are genuine questions. The most logical questions to ask, but I do not have a straight answer.
Not one!
"Rhydian, you do not act without reason. You need to tell me what’s going on." Koda pushes, and I sigh. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
I open my mouth, then close it to think.
"I don’t trust her," I say finally, and Koda’s brows knit together.
"Alana?"
"Yes."
He waits patiently. Waiting for me to explain myself, and I shut the book in my hands in annoyance before rolling my eyes.
"I know how this sounds," I start.
"I know she’s been nothing but respectful. Helpful, and quiet..."
"She’s devoted to Elián and our family. She’s always been." Koda adds, and I groan.
"I know," I snap, then force myself to breathe.
"But that’s not what this is about."
"Then what is it about?" Koda probes, clearly worried and equally confused.
I drag a hand through my hair as I stand up and walk over to one of the windows.
"She feels wrong," I finally blurt.
"And before you say anything, no, I can’t explain it better than that." I quickly add in my defence.
Koda leans back against his desk, with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Rhydian—" He begins, in that persuasive tone, but I will not be treated like a child.
"I have ignored my instincts before," I interrupt sharply, and he pauses.
"There was a time when every part of me screamed that something was off. That someone was lying. That someone was dangerous..." I begin as memories of Bram and Elian’s desperate warnings flood my mind.
"I told myself I was being paranoid. I told myself to be fair. To be kind. To give the benefit of the doubt." I continue as I meet my older brother’s gaze, and he blinks at me.
"Koda, I paid for that mistake. Elian doesn’t look at me the same because of that mistake. He doesn’t even so much as write to me, and he barely replies to my letters. I’m still suffering for that mistake, so no." I rage on, and Koda doesn’t interrupt this time.
"I won’t do that again," I say quietly with regret thick in my voice.
"I don’t care if I can’t articulate it. I don’t care if it makes me look cruel. My instincts are screaming, and I will not silence them for the sake of politeness." I conclude matter-of-factly, and Koda exhales slowly as his gaze drops to the floor.
"She’s afraid of you," he notes, and I shrug.
"That’s not my concern."
"That’s not who you usually are." He notes, and I scoff.
"People change," I reply flatly, and his eyes search my face, looking for something.
Reassurance? Doubt? Anything... But he finds none.
"Just... don’t act without proof," he says at last, and I let out a breath.
"I won’t. But keep her away from me. I’m tired of her trying to get close. " I reply honestly, and Koda sighs with a nod.
*****
Later that evening, I see her again.
She’s standing near the edge of the training grounds, watching the warriors spar, with her hands clasped in front of her.
When she notices me, her eyes light up with something like relief. Then, she approaches cautiously.
"Alpha Rhydian," she greets with a bow.
"I was looking for you. Queen Cassia asked me to inform you," She begins, but I step back.
Deliberately.
Her words die in her throat, but I don’t care.
"You can relay messages through someone else," I say coldly.
"I’m not your responsibility," I add, and her lips part, then close.
"I didn’t mean to offend—"
"You didn’t," I reply.
"But if you keep trying to engage me, you will," I add, and that finally cracks something.
Her fingers curl into fists at her sides, and her breath sharpens.
For a heartbeat, her eyes aren’t soft or submissive or careful.
They’re furious.
Cold and calculating. Then it’s gone– replaced with a stiff smile.
She bows stiffly, and I raise a brow.
"Understood." She says, and as she turns away, my pulse pounds.
There it is again.
That familiar, ugly certainty.
As I watch her leave, every muscle tenses.
I don’t know who she is. I don’t know what she wants.
But I know this, down to my bones... She is not what she claims to be.
And this time, I won’t be the fool who looks away.
