When Love Turns the Tables: The Mysterious Husband's Chase
Chapter 924: Reunion with Lu Zhang (4)
Unsure if it’s because they returned, Xie Xiaoran quickly put away her drawing pad, took out a book, and quietly read, just like she usually does.
Su Man answered a phone call and then went out, leaving only Su Weiyi and Xie Xiaoran in the dorm.
Both of them have quiet personalities, and for the better part of the afternoon, it was so silent in the dorm that you could hear a pin drop.
The only sound was a phone call from Sheng Yanxiao to Su Weiyi before boarding the plane; besides that, there was no other noise.
By around five in the afternoon, Su Weiyi felt a bit hungry. She got her meal card ready to go to the cafeteria. Considering that it was just her and Xie Xiaoran in the dorm, and even though they weren’t very familiar with each other, out of politeness, Su Weiyi asked, "Xiaoran, I’m heading to the cafeteria. Want to come along?"
For once, Xie Xiaoran looked up at her and then nodded.
Q University has many cafeterias, roughly a dozen of various sizes. Some are managed by the school, and others are hosted by chain brands.
The closest one to their dorm is an outside brand, and it has good food, so whenever Su Weiyi used to go to the cafeteria with Su Man and the others, she always went there.
However, as soon as they got downstairs, Xie Xiaoran spoke again, "Can we go to the second cafeteria?"
She meant the second cafeteria, which is run by the school and relatively close to them, though it’s still farther than the chain one.
Su Weiyi didn’t ask much and nodded, "Sure."
The two of them walked through the campus in silence. Having started the semester three months ago, Su Weiyi actually hadn’t been to this one yet. As soon as she entered, she was hit by the smell of cooking oil. She glanced around at each food stall; the large trays of food looked quite unappetizing. Su Weiyi randomly chose a stall, got one meat dish and one vegetable dish, and then turned around to find a seat.
Xie Xiaoran quickly got her food too. Su Weiyi glanced at her tray; she only got stir-fried shredded potatoes, but her portion of rice was twice the size of Su Weiyi’s.
Su Weiyi couldn’t help but ask, "Is your food enough?"
Xie Xiaoran looked up at her with calm eyes, but there was also a hint of defensiveness, and nodded, "It’s enough."
Su Weiyi understood. She thought about Xie Xiaoran’s usual lifestyle, her frequent absence from the dorm during weekends, and once even overheard her making a phone call that seemed like a job inquiry.
Looking at the way she ate now, it was clear.
Not everyone in this world is born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Su Weiyi was the same; without the Sheng Family, she might have been abandoned long ago and starved to death.
Su Weiyi lowered her eyes and ate slowly. She was careful to only eat from one side of her dishes, leaving the other side untouched. She also deliberately quickened her pace; when she was about seventy to eighty percent full, Su Weiyi turned her chopsticks and boldly transferred half of her two dishes onto Xiaoran’s plate.
"I have a small appetite and can never finish my meal; it used to be for Manman. She’s not here today, so it would be a waste to throw it away. Please help me with it."
Su Weiyi displayed an incredibly sincere smile on her face. Xie Xiaoran looked up at her briefly, then lowered her gaze and didn’t say anything, but she began eating silently.
After a long while, Su Weiyi heard her soft but firm voice, "Thank you."
Su Weiyi smiled. She’s not the type to say things like she just did, but she understood the great harm that money can inflict on someone’s dignity.
Perhaps because of the small incident in the cafeteria, over the next week, Su Weiyi noticed a significant change in Xie Xiaoran’s attitude towards her.
