Chapter 87: The Next Game

The Floor 5 run happened on Saturday.

Eight of us total — me, Mira, Rin, Sable, Cael, Daren, Lyra. Esta had come to the dungeon entrance and then decided she’d rather eat something, which was a complete Esta decision and nobody argued with it.

Lyra had been to Floor 3 before, back when she was still grinding toward her guild certification. Floor 5 was different — the architecture shifted two floors down, the Shades thicker, the corridors longer. She stayed close to Daren through the first junction, which was practical rather than fearful. She clocked the geometry, the threat patterns, the way our party moved through it. She was observational in the specific way of someone who actually wanted to understand what they were seeing.

She killed two Shades herself. Daren’s spare blade, footwork she’d apparently been learning somewhere without telling anyone. The second one she took in the neck junction clean on the first try.

Rin watched and said nothing, which was high praise from Rin.

We cleared Floor 5 in just under two hours. No casualties, no close calls. Full EXP distribution at the floor gate.

On the way up, Lyra fell into step beside me.

"Nine thirty-eight," she said.

She could see his meter. I hadn’t fully processed that she could see the meters too — not the full overlay, but the relationship numbers, hers and Daren’s both.

"Climbing," I said.

"Every day." She looked forward, not at me. "You watched it from ninety-one."

"Yes."

A beat. "Thank you," she said. Just that. Direct, no performance around it, meaning exactly what it said.

I didn’t know what to do with it so I said "yeah" and she accepted that and we walked the rest of the way up in the particular comfortable silence of people who’d been through something adjacent to each other and come out fine on the other side.

---

The debrief happened at the Crown because everything happened at the Crown now.

Esta had saved us food, which she’d done without being asked and would deny having planned. Sena had the table set before we got through the door. Eight people, cups for all of them, the noise of a full table finding its register.

Daren said something to Lyra that I didn’t catch and she laughed — real, unguarded, the kind that didn’t have anything underneath it. The relationship meter ticked while I was watching.

Nine thirty-nine.

Cael was talking to Mira about the Floor 5 architecture versus Floor 7, the structural differences in how the two floors had been built — Cael feeling it, Mira mapping it. Sable had her sketchbook out. Rin was eating with the focused efficiency she brought to everything and listening to all of it without appearing to.

Normal. Full table. Mine.

I sat at the corner and drank the cup and let the noise of it happen around me.

---

The wiki flagged something at the end of the evening.

Not urgent. Not a threat. A new entry generating at the bottom of the record — below the game state confirmation, below the correction mechanism termination log, below Entry 008 revised.

I pulled it up.

**ENTRY — VOLUME MARKER — FILED**

*Post-canonical record: Volume 1 — COMPLETE. Events documented: canonical deviation through protocol termination through post-canonical stabilization. All primary entries filed. All correction mechanisms logged. Game state confirmed stable and self-sustaining.*

*Note: This record does not end here. Post-canonical documentation continues as primary function. Next volume of events: pending.*

*The story is not over. It has not been over since the first deviation. It will not be over for a long time.*

I read it twice.

Then I looked around the table. Mira and Cael with their heads together over the floor geometry. Sable sketching. Rin finishing her food and already looking toward the door with the quiet restlessness she got when she was ready for the next thing. Esta arguing a point with Daren that had something to do with corridor angles. Lyra listening to both of them and tracking the logic with the same focused intelligence she applied to everything. Calenne watching all of it from the end of the table with both hands around her cup, that long patient attention of hers taking in the room.

Full table.

The wiki had a volume marker sitting in it like a bookmark. The Chronicler was on Floor 7 right now, documenting in the dark. The branch master had three more archive files she’d flagged for review. Mira had a hypothesis about the base-twelve notation system that she hadn’t finished following yet. Rin wanted to get to Floor 8 eventually, had said so once, flatly, like it was inevitable. Cael’s protocol sensitivity was mapping floor architecture in ways the wiki was still learning to classify.

Vorn was deciding what he was without an operation running. The second stall permit was probably sitting on Sera’s table right now.

A lot of road left.

I closed the entry and looked at my cup and thought about the system note one more time. *This game no longer has a canonical ending. It has something better.*

From where I was sitting I could see exactly what better looked like. It looked like this room. These people. The next floor and the one after that. Mira’s paper records and Sable’s sketchbook and Rin’s blunt field reports and Cael reading architecture nobody else could feel. The Chronicler filing Entry 000 into whatever came next.

Me, here, in a city I’d fought for without planning to.

The wiki was already generating Volume 2 entries. I could see the frame opening at the bottom of the record — new data, new classifications, new things the game hadn’t had names for yet.

I let it run.

Picked up the cup. Finished it.

The table was loud and warm and Sena came by and put another one down without being asked.

Alright.

Volume 2.
