Star Odyssey
Chapter 4346: Facing It Head-On
Lu Yin's pupils shrank, and he instinctively teleported away, vanishing.
Still in the same place, Lan Meng also sensed the approaching danger, but without the ability to teleport, there was no escape. The blade brushed past their body, nearly killing them in an instant.
They raced into the blue coffin to escape. An overwhelmingly powerful enemy had appeared, but how could one have arrived here?
It had to have come for Lu Yin. This was the Mudwater Dominion's determination to kill him.
There was a bang as the long white blade chopped down, slashing at the blue coffin and splitting it open.
Inside, Lan Meng was horrified. They controlled the blue coffin to flee. Where is Lu Yin? That bastard didn’t even take me along. Lu Yin, Lu Yin!
Ni Ren descended from high above. A part of the creature rose up, and then the other long white blade dropped down in a vicious chop aimed at the blue coffin.
The two white blades struck the same point, shattering the blue floating coffin. Having entered the coffin, there was nowhere for Lan Meng to dodge. They leapt upwards. "The one you want is Lu Yin! He ran away! If you chase him now, you can still catch him. I have nothing to do with this!"
The two white blades at Ni Ren's side rose and fell yet again, still targeting Lan Meng.
Lan Meng gritted their teeth and met the attack, simultaneously calling Ba Se.
A tiny gate appeared beside them.
"Ba Se, save me!" Lan Meng roared.
A white blade fell, and Lan Meng raised their blue sword. Divine energy madly surged from their body, and a blue line coiled around the hilt of the blue sword. Lan Meng was fighting back desperately.
The civilizational weapon, a long white blade that had recorded an Immortal, viciously slammed against the blue sword. One strike, just one, split the blue sword in two. The other white long blade fell, dropping right in front of Lan Meng. At the same time, the blue sky appeared, and a blue halo encircled Ni Ren, trying to trap it.
The moment the blue world descended, the second white blade fell. The blade edge cleaved through Lan Meng's body, killing them.
Two strikes had broken the floating coffin. Two strikes had killed Lan Meng.
Ni Ren stood high above and stared into the distance. Lan Meng's death did not stir the slightest ripple in the creature. There were both weak and strong Immortals within Obscura, and it was not as if Ni Ren had never killed anyone from Obscura during past wars. This creature had simply been unlucky to encounter it.
From far away, Lu Yin watched with the Mirrorlight Art.
Ni Ren's attacks contained an indescribable, horrifying chill. Two slashes had shattered a floating coffin, which meant that they were as powerful as Green Lotus's Karmic Heavenwheel. Two strikes had killed Lan Meng, leaving the Immortal without any chance of fighting back. Even though Lan Meng had fallen from their peak due to their heavy injuries, they should not have been that fragile.
There was something wrong with those slashes.
This creature was Ni Ren. It had actually appeared on Lu Yin’s battlefield. That indicated that Ni Ren's opponent was very likely Hong Xia. Only he would risk offending Ba Se and let Ni Ren leave. The man wanted to borrow Ni Ren's blade to kill Lu Yin.
Lu Yin’s eyes narrowed. Ni Ren was too great a threat.
Suddenly, Ni Ren charged toward him. It had sensed Lu Yin.
For a creature as powerful as Ni Ren, it was not hard to cross a distance that an average Immortal would take twenty years to cover. Hong Xia was able to direct attacks across a distance of 150 years’ travel, so even if Ni Ren was inferior to that man, it still was strong enough to attack across a twenty-years’ travel distance. It had found him.
Being able to attack at such a distance did not mean that a creature could see that far, but for a being like Ni Ren, it was not difficult to sense an enemy's position.
Separated by a twenty-years’ travel distance, one of Ni Ren’s white blades slashed down. The edge split the cosmos, seemingly cleaving the entire Aevum Inch in two.
What a terrifying slash! This creature was not even close to being on the same level as Ni Gui or Ni Bai. No wonder it was considered to only be weaker than Ni Bieluo.
Lu Yin took a deep breath and disappeared, teleporting away.
Far away, Ni Ren froze. So fast? Teleportation? That must be teleportation. How else could a mere Aberrant instantly cross such an impossible distance? Even I can’t do that.
But how could this species teleport? Was that not the power of those strange birds?
This was a problem. The fact that the Aberrant could teleport meant that Ni Ren would not be able to catch them at all.
Ni Ren stared at Lu Yin. No matter what, it would give chase.
Lu Yin teleported again and again, though he did not move completely out of Ni Ren's range. He was luring Ni Ren, drawing it away from where Lan Meng had been killed. Lan Meng was dead, but their blue line had been left behind.
That line was Lu Yin's target.
As for Ni Ren, he was no match and had no intention of fighting the creature.
Where is Ba Se? Are they still not going to contact me? Lan Meng’s already dead.
Now! Lu Yin used the Mirrorlight Art to look back at where Lan Meng had died and teleported multiple times to close the distance. The void was continually split apart by slashes. Ni Ren's attacks could cover nearly a distance of nearly 100 years’ travel. This was clearly inferior to Hong Xia, and of course, the creature could not catch up to Lu Yin.
He arrived at where Lan Meng had died and looked at the shattered coffin and Lan Meng's corpse. They had been talking only a short time ago, and now they were dead. Even an Immortal was not in control of their own life.
Ni Ren had killed Lan Meng the moment it wanted to, completely ignoring the increase to its karmic chain. Lu Yin had expected Lan Meng to be recorded.
There was a surge of divine energy, and Lu Yin scanned the void to find it.
The blue line was darting across the cosmos. Teleporting over, Lu Yin reached out and grabbed it. Once the blue line entered his body, it shot straight for his star of divine energy.
There were already two stars of divine energy in his inner universe. One was the original, and Lu Yin had formed a second specifically to suppress Hui's silver line. To accommodate the blue line, Lu Yin would need to condense a third star of divine energy.
In the distance, Ni Ren’s twin white blades swung, slashing downwards. The attack crossed vast stretches of space to reach Lu Yin.
He avoided the attack. After teleporting several times, he moved far enough away to transmit his voice. "You first killed Lan Meng first, and now you want to kill me too? Aren’t you afraid of lengthening your karmic chain and being left unable to ever take action again?"
Ni Ren's voice was terrifyingly low. "There is plenty of time to sleep."
"Why didn’t you record Lan Meng to form another civilizational weapon?"
"Obscura members cannot be recorded," Ni Ren then shouted, "Why can you teleport?"
Lu Yin arched a brow. "I am from the Plume Immortals."
Ni Ren froze. From the Plume Immortals?
Taking advantage of its momentary distraction, Lu Yin vanished, teleporting away.
He had always excelled at muddying the waters. Having learned more about fishing civilizations, he could claim to be from the Death Megaverse next. If he was not believed, he could even demonstrate Bone Script to convince someone. The more powers that he cultivated, the easier it became to fool others.
Suddenly, he froze. A slash swept by in front of his eyes, and with, something else appeared: a severed arm.
Lu Yin stared at the arm. It was from a human. He looked back. Given that he was more than twenty years’ travel away, he could not see Ni Ren, but he already knew what he would see at this moment.
That arm belonged to the Immortal of the Mountain Sword Sect. Ni Ren was still controlling the man.
Far away, Ni Ren's body was attached to the top of the head of the Mountain Sword Sect’s ancestor. The old man was covered in blood. One arm was gone, and his body shifted in an unnatural manner, as though he no longer had any bones. He looked utterly miserable.
Hong Xia had convinced Ni Ren that humans did not care about others of their kind, which had let Obscura easily rescue the Mountain Sword Sect. However, the fact that the sect had been rescued proved that humans did care about their own kind, or at least that some humans did.
This Aberrant was one of those.
Ni Ren was unable to catch up to Lu Yin, who only needed to teleport five times to escape from Ni Ren’s pursuit.
Since pursuit was impossible, the only option was for Ni Ren to use the Mountain Sword Sect’s ancestor to force the Aberrant to stay. If this attempt succeeded, it would be the best case scenario. If it failed, it could retreat, and Ni Bieluo would be the one to take action. Of course, no one wanted that to happen. If Ni Bieluo acted, it would inevitably draw out far more powerful opponents from Obscura.
Ni Ren waited. Lu Yin had already stopped moving. Would the Aberrant return or not?
Far away, Lu Yin silently stared at the arm.
Ni Ren was in no hurry to do anything. The longer that Lu Yin did not move, the more likely it was that Ni Ren’s plan would succeed. At this moment, there was no longer any point in attacking.
At this moment, a gate finally appeared, and Ba Se's voice came through. "Lu Yin, you may leave the battlefield. We have already won this war. The Mudwater Dominion has no chance of turning their defeat into victory."
"Lan Meng is dead."
"I know. War brings both life and death."
"Why did Ni Ren appear on this part of the battlefield?"
"After the war is over, responsibility will be investigated."
"Since it’s already here, I don’t want to let it return to the Mudwater Dominion alive. Is there anyone from Obscura who can help me?"
Ba Se calmly replied, "Ni Ren's strength is second only to Ni Bieluo’s, and the Mudwater Dominion has already seen everyone who participated in this war. If anyone from Obscura takes action, Ni Ren will certainly designate karma to that individual. No one from Obscura is willing to accept the burden of killing Ni Ren."
That aligned with Lu Yin's expectations. Killing Ni Ren would increase an Immortal’s karmic chain far too much. What made things even worse was that Ni Ren wielded two civilizational weapons and had recorded two Immortals. In other words, killing Ni Ren would increase one’s karmic chain not only for killing Ni Ren, but also for the destruction of the recorded Immortal civilizations. That was far, far too great a price.
This was also the reason why Furball and others had asked Lu Yin for his help. Killing a single Immortal would not increase their karmic chain enough to justify swallowing their pride and offering to pay Lu Yin for his help.
The Mudwater Dominion was absolutely infuriating to fight against, and the risks involved in fighting them meant that not even Obscura wanted a direct confrontation.
"So this war can be considered over, right?" Lu Yin asked.
Ba Se said, "You could say that."
Lu Yin let out a breath. "I understand. Ba Se, do you think that I’m important to Obscura?"
Ba Se's tone remained indifferent. "Every member of Obscura is important."
Lu Yin laughed under his breath. Ba Se had not even bothered mentioning Lan Meng's death without being prompted. Important, and yet not important.
"If I am important, then when my life is in danger, help if you are willing." With that, he teleported away, heading for Ni Ren.
The Mountain Sword Sect’s ancestor had sacrificed far too much for his civilization. Lu Yin knew that he was no match for Ni Ren, but given his many abilities and powers, he wanted to at least try. If it was possible to save the old man, he would. If not, Lu Yin would not regret things. At the very least, teleportation should make it not too difficult to escape.
After teleporting several times, Lu Yin appeared a short distance away from Ni Ren. The two looked at each other.
"So you really do care about your own kind." Ni Ren was exhilarated. Its voice even rose in pitch. It had succeeded. This Aberrant would die.
Lu Yin stared at Ni Ren. "I will give you a choice. If you do not threaten me with other humans, I will stay and fight you, doing my best to save him. If you insist on threatening me with him, I will leave right now, and you will never catch me."
"What right do you have to propose such terms?"
"What right do you have to threaten me? Ask him—does he want me to save him, or does he want me to leave?"
Ni Ren shifted up, exposing the human Immortal’s mouth. "Speak. Tell him to save you."
The Mountain Sword Sect’s ancestor coughed a few times. Blood leaked from the corners of his mouth as he spoke in a hoarse voice.
"Say it!" Ni Ren barked.
The old man smiled, baffling Ni Ren. What was there to smile about at a time like this?
Lu Yin smiled too, though he clenched his fists tightly.
"How wonderful, there are other remnants of humanity’s legacy. From your voice, you should not be very old, correct?"
