Chapter 32: Cornered

Arthur felt panic, and without any hesitation, he shattered the wall of the trunk with his powerful body, and bolted away. But that was useless, for the moment he ran a few steps, three wolves blocked his path.

Stumbling, he changed his course, and found more of them before him. He gritted his fangs, and changed his course again, and again, and every time more wolves blocked his path.

There were dozens of them, and they had surrounded him from every direction, without leaving him any escape.

They bared their fangs, and slowly tightened the noose around him, growling savagely. Their massive bodies, and savage features, were capable of instilling terror in the hearts of their enemies.

’No, no, I am done for.’ Chaos overwhelmed Arthur’s emotions and thoughts. He took a defensive stance, and bared his fangs as well, preparing to defend himself.

[ Wolf — Common — F-Rank ]

[ Wolf — Common — E-Rank ]

His eyes filled with hostility swept all the wolves around him. Most of them were F-Rank, with eight at E-Rank, and this number was more than enough to kill him.

His expressions darkened further, and he was convinced he had no chance. Fleeing was impossible, and fighting? Well, that was suicide, but he did not have freedom of choice, for his ability to understand the wolves’ growls made him realize they had no good intentions.

"Intruder."

"Let us make it submit."

"Let us kill it."

Their way of communicating was very simple, and all their conversations consisted of one or two words, like small children who had not mastered speech.

Anger rose within him, and he hated this desperate situation. The urge to pounce on the nearest wolf came over him, but he did not act on it. Initiating an attack was the worst move he could make.

He activated the Primal Predator bloodline, and at that moment, his calmness returned to him. He followed what his instincts dictated, and hid his fangs, lowered his tail, and avoided staring directly into their eyes.

Body language was important in the monster world, for this reason he tried to show them as clearly as possible that he posed no threat, and had no intention of fighting them.

His decision was correct, for when he stopped showing aggression, the wolves’ aggression also decreased, and a large number of them showed some positive response.

’This is working.’ He took a deep breath, and without lowering his guard, bowed his head in submission, and retreated very slowly, making it clear that he only wanted to leave.

The wolves growled in a threatening tone, yet they did not try to stop him, in fact some of them made a little room for him. His confidence grew, and he increased his speed.

The wolves moved aside one after another from his path, and little by little, he exited their encirclement. But as they say, the wind does not blow as the sailor wishes, one of the wolves continued blocking his path.

’Damn, move.’ He screamed inside, and even though his bloodline suppressed his emotions, his heartbeats quickened, and he could not prevent anxiety from showing on his face for a brief moment.

There was nothing he could do, reluctantly, he stopped before the wolf that was blocking his path, and with as much calmness and patience as possible, maintained his submissive stance. For him this was extremely humiliating.

The only good thing was that the wolf showed no hostility, so it was clear that its intentions were not bad, perhaps it was simply testing him.

’Come on, move aside, let me go.’ Arthur bowed his head further.

Slowly, the wolf moved, but instead of moving away from his path, it got closer to him, and with a strange expression, began circling around him.

Arthur tensed, watched its movements cautiously, and prepared himself, physically and mentally, for all possibilities, whether good or bad.

Suddenly, the wolf stopped behind him, tilted its head slightly, then began sniffing his butt. This was common behavior among canines, so it was not strange.

But Arthur wasn’t truly a canine, so he had not expected this to happen at all. His eyes widened to their fullest, and he felt as though he had been violated, which from a certain angle he had.

The matter was so shocking and surprising, that the Primal Predator bloodline could not suppress his reaction.

His human instincts screamed in alarm. He moved automatically, and attacked the wolf in defense of his dignity.

He swiped with his dagger-like claws, and tore a massive wound in the wolf’s face. Blood splattered, and the wolf retreated while whining in pain.

"Oh, shit." Arthur realized his mistake too late, he had made a bad move, a very bad one.

All the wolves bared their fangs, and took fighting stances, and surrounded him in a tight formation. And no matter what he did this time, they would not make room for him to leave.

The rules in a wolf pack were clear, any intruder who harmed one of them was doomed to die.

"Bad intruder."

"Let us kill it."

They growled savagely, and slowly tightened the noose around him, their sticky saliva dripped from between their sharp fangs, and their eyes gleamed with intense killing intent. Yet, they did not attack him immediately, and waited for the right opportunity.

Even though they were mere monsters, they were not stupid, they had cornered their enemy, he was desperate, and ready to do anything to survive, the wolf that attacked him first would face fierce resistance, and would most likely be severely injured.

’Why? Why did I have to attack it? Damn me, and my messed-up personality.’

Arthur lamented his fate, and without restraining himself further, he removed all signs of submission, and released his full strength.

"Back off." He stood in a threatening stance, and with intense agitation, turned his head left and right, growling with unbelievable savagery in the face of everyone who got close to him.

His ferocity, and the lethal aura emanating from him, made all the F-Rank wolves retreat in terror, and even the E-Rank wolves showed hesitation about attacking him.

But for how long? He was aware that one of them would take the initiative and attack him at any moment now, and when it did, the rest would be emboldened, and pounce on him all at once.

’Damn, damn, what will I do now?’ He felt despair, and when he thought all doors had closed in his face, a glimmer of hope appeared, or more precisely, the system screen appeared before him suddenly.
