Slime Reincarnation
Chapter 22: Let’s Register at the Guild After All
We left the guild and started walking down the main street.
"So what now, Yabe-dono? We got a lot of money."
"Yeah, we did~"
In reality, the sub-space compressed storage was still more than half full of monster materials. We could sell them whenever we needed money. From how the medicinal herbs and monster corpses were holding up, it seemed like nothing inside was rotting, so long-term storage probably wouldn’t be an issue.
Still, getting those gloves was a real stroke of luck.
When controlling slime tentacles, I could move them freely, but fine, detailed work had been difficult. I could wrap things and hold them, but I couldn’t do precise movements like using fingertips.
However, once I put gloves on the tips of the tentacles, the ends forcibly split inside the gloves and formed something like palms. Thanks to that sensation, I could now recreate the feeling from when I was human and freely form and control fingertips and palms.
"This is huge. Now I can rub and pinch things."
...I won’t ask what exactly, but whether I can do it or not, being able to do it is better. Yep.
『By the way, Boss, was that really okay?』
Chick Captain asked.
"What do you mean?"
『The adventurer registration at the guild. Didn’t you need an ID to enter and leave human towns?』
Chick Captain sharply pointed out.
"...Oh crap?"
『Why are you saying that like a question!?』
Chick Captain made a shocked "piyo piyo" face.
"Now that you mention it, yeah. I said I didn’t want to register because I didn’t want to be tied down by the guild or have my personal info taken... but I do need an ID!"
Ugh~ I messed up. I can’t keep hiding inside Irina’s backpack every time we enter or leave town.
If I register at the guild, they’ll definitely try to dig up my personal information. The Guild Master’s behavior earlier was also suspicious. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
Most of all, I really don’t want to be forcibly conscripted.
But from all the light novels I’ve read, forced obligations usually only kick in after you reach a high rank. In that case, I can just register, avoid raising my rank, do the bare minimum of quests to maintain it, and that should be fine.
"Alright! I’ve changed my mind. Let’s register at the adventurer guild after all. Without an ID, I’d have to stay hidden in Irina’s backpack all the time."
"Muu... If it’s to be useful to Yabe-dono, I don’t mind carrying the backpack no matter how heavy it is."
Irina pouted and appealed cutely.
"I can’t always make you carry me, and there might be times when I need to enter or leave town alone. So yeah, registering is the right call."
"Muu... I suppose it can’t be helped."
As long as I only ask them to buy monster materials and don’t take any requests, I should be able to keep my rank low while still receiving money.
"Alright, let’s head back to the adventurer guild right away."
We did a U-turn on the main street and headed straight back to the guild.
We threw open the large doors of the adventurer guild with a loud BANG.
The adventurers inside turned toward the noise, only to see the suspicious mage and female adventurer who had just been talking with the Guild Master return.
The suspicious mage looked around, spotted the guild receptionist at the counter, and shouted energetically:
"Ooooi~! Big sis from earlier~!"
He dashed over to the counter.
"...What the hell is that guy?"
The other adventurers seemed to decide "don’t touch crazy" and chose not to get involved.
"Big siiis~! I decided I want to register as an adventurer after all!"
It was the same female receptionist who had handled the material buyback earlier.
Luckily, her counter was free, so I went straight to her.
When I cheerfully made my request, I heard someone in the back room spit out a "Bffoo!" sound, but I decided to ignore it.
"Yes, adventurer registration, correct?"
"That’s right. Can you help me?"
"Understood. Please fill out this application form. Would you like me to write it for you?"
The receptionist handed over the form. It was thick paper, almost like parchment.
I stared at it and could read the fields. I borrowed a pen and tried writing my name.
"Can you read this?"
"...Yabe-dono, is that correct?"
Oh, nice. I wrote it in Japanese, but it seems readable here. That’s helpful. Learning a whole new language from scratch at my age would be pure torture.
I filled everything out and handed the form back to the receptionist.
"Yes, I’ll take care of it... Your name is Yabe-sama. Place of origin... the shore of the Spring of Miracles...?"
"Yeah, I made that spring myself."
Well, technically it was thanks to the water spirit Wintia, but whatever.
"Occupation: Archmage..."
"Yep."
"Muu! You could have written ’My Master’ there! And um... you could also write ’companion’ or ’partner’..."
Irina turned bright red and fidgeted while mumbling something. What’s gotten into her?
"Uh... Tamer? Summoner?"
"That’s right."
"...Um... it says ’subordinates’ here. Do you mean tamed beasts?"
"Yep."
"...And ’Wolf Fang Clan, entire clan and followers, 60 individuals’..."
"Is that a problem?"
I asked cutely.
"Summoned beings: the Four Great Spirits...!!"
"Yeah, they’re really good kids."
"...Please wait a moment."
The receptionist put a hand to her forehead, looking dizzy, then shook her head and disappeared into the back room with my application form.
"What the hell is this!?"
I heard someone shout. Yep, definitely the Guild Master.
The receptionist came back out and called to us.
"Yabe-sama, Irina-sama, please come this way."
When we entered the room, sure enough, the Guild Master we had met earlier was waiting.
"Hey, Guild Master. What’s up?"
"What’s up my ass! Why the hell did you come back to register!?"
BAM! He slammed my application form on the desk and yelled.
Huh? Why is he mad at me?
"Well, I realized I need an ID to enter and leave town."
"Yeah, that’s true, but... what exactly do you want here?"
"Huh? Nothing special. I just want to hunt monsters and sell the materials. That’s about it."
I answered clearly.
"Name: Yabe... Age: ’Unknown’... Are you screwing with me...? Occupation: Archmage... My head hurts..."
The Guild Master shook his head as if dizzy while reading further.
"Tamer? Summoner?"
"Yeah, cool right?"
I proudly puffed out my chest (though it was hidden under the robe, and he couldn’t see my face).
"Subordinates: Wolf Fang Clan, entire clan and followers, 60... Summoned: Four Great Spirits... You really have everything, don’t you!?"
The Guild Master was practically snapping at me. How rude. I’m just a former slime who didn’t even get a proper cheat and had to struggle to survive.
"I made some friends, that’s all."
"Normal people don’t call tamed beasts and summoned spirits ’friends’..."
The Guild Master sighed deeply.
"Rejecting that would make me really lonely, so no."
I firmly declared. They are my friends.
"Haa... Fine, I’ll approve the registration. But don’t cause any problems! If anything weird happens, come talk to me immediately! Don’t do anything on your own! Got it!?"
"Yeah, yeah, I got it. Thanks."
I tried to leave quickly.
"Wait. One last question. Do you plan to raise your adventurer rank?"
"Nope."
I answered instantly, not sure what he was checking for. I don’t want anyone expecting anything from me. I hate trouble.
"...Understood. You can go."
"See ya. I’ll be back to sell more monster materials. Irina, let’s go shopping."
"Understood, Master. Let’s head out for shopping right away."
And with that, we finally left the adventurer guild.
