Planet Vs Aliens: Space User Saves the World
Chapter 24: Continuing List
Moving on to her list, she decided to capture as much of the knowledge and culture as she could. She wanted to find time to appreciate them all, but she knew she didn’t have the luxury of time yet. So, she opted to just record or download as much as she could.
Knowledge was power, and the loss of so much of it was something many people would lament in the future. If she had more space, other than getting digital copies, she would also buy a lot of hard copies of books in all fields, even storybooks.
Growing up, she had heard a lot of things from the older generation. Some had lived long to see more, while some (like her parents) were very young when the Fall happened and had just enough memory to remember what it was like.
With this, she hoped that the endless regrets would be lessened, at least.
She listed buying several top-of-the-line external hard drives, and preserve knowledge, dramas, movies, music, and so on.
She knew that this apocalypse wouldn’t end any time soon, and she did not want to survive alone, so she was planning on filling the space up to the brim. She’d commission someone to make high cabinets and shelves to maximize its height.
Although her space wasn’t big, she wanted to think that a survivor of the apocalypse, the amount fit in her 3 meters by 3 meters space would be enough for her to eat.
She hoped.
The current average consumption for her country was around 2000 calories. There were even countries that averaged 3000 calories.
To give context, a hundred calories was 1 slice plain, white bread or ½ cup of white rice, or 1 piece of egg, or 1 piece of tortilla (she hadn’t tasted this yet and made a mental note to taste later).
Awakeners would need about two to three times that. The nutrient solution had not been invented yet at this time, so one could imagine how much food she needed to stockpile if she wanted herself fed for years.
Fifty years was impossible but, she hoped, the food would last 10 years at least.
That said, these food would all be the boring, monotonous kind. To be honest, just imagining that she’d eat the same bland food for years made her want to barf.
After being enlightened to what ’real’ taste was, she really wondered whether she’d be able to adjust.
No wonder the previous generation was so depressed. Falling from culinary luxury to poverty was really insanity-inducing.
Then she remembered what the nutrient solution tasted like, and she gagged then and there.
Nutrient solutions were made of artificially created things.
At first, there were still some plants, but as they died and could not grow, humans learned to harness atmospheric carbons, nitrogen, and minerals to feed themselves. They could also manufacture synthetic nutrients through amino acids.
According to records, some had tried to eat the aliens, too. At first, it was just the aliens who came from the meteorite and not the paracitized humans, though some seemed to have started to eat the latter too. It wasn’t easy, and each hunt took down people, but people were too hungry to care.
Unfortunately, eating those damned things would cause the infection as well, transforming the body into disgusting parasite creatures, so that development was shut down very quickly.
Anyway, after a long solo brainstorming session, she went to prepare for bed. She took a bath, relaxed, and watched television for an hour (she wanted to watch the news, but it was too depressing).
Right before bed, she checked the status of the food she placed in the static area, checking whether it had cooled or not. Every move she made, she prayed that it would work.
With a hopeful heart, Naia took out the cooked food she stored and the savory scent of the meat whiffed her nose a second later. With a gulp, she couldn’t help but take a bite again.
Her eyes brightened!
The food was still hot! It had been a few hours since he put them there, so they should’ve long cooled down.
Right now, in contrast, the food seemed like it had just been taken out of the microwave! She then looked at the glass filled with ice she placed next to it, and saw that the ice cubes were just as big as they had been when she placed them in.
She giggled to herself, absolutely amazed and happy.
It seemed like her space—or at least a portion of it—could indeed keep things fresh! It was completely static, as if time had not moved a second inside.
She checked the energy and, for now, the consumption of the static area was practically zero, and she breathed a sigh of relief. Even if it did consume a bit of energy, it would be worth it!
Though she definitely wouldn’t be able to eat cooked and warm meal every day, what she’d store would definitely keep her going! Spiritually!
