"What, what, what, what, what is this!" Dora pointed at the ghostly little girl and shouted.
"It’s a ghost, what else?" Pannis casually replied, "Do you think she’s alive?"
"Dammit, didn’t you say that your Array can isolate life force?" Dora stamped her foot and exclaimed, "What’s going on then?"
"Didn’t I also say there would be exceptions?" Pannis said, "This is the exception."
"Exception, didn’t you say only top-level Undead could be exceptions? Like a banshee..." Dora suddenly realized and pointed at the little ghost and screamed, "Banshee?"
"You guessed right." Pannis nodded, "A Death Banshee. But what are you afraid of? We have a priest here, a Gold-Rank priest against a Gold-Rank Death Banshee. We have the winning hand."
"I’m not scared." Dora said forcefully, "I’m just a little uneasy."
"Uncles, aunties." The little ghost suddenly turned and asked, "What were you all looking at just now? It looked interesting but there doesn’t seem to be anything interesting outside."
Four girls were looking at the ghost with cautious faces, only Pannis replied calmly, "We were enjoying the scenery. You’re young and wouldn’t understand it, but when you grow up you’ll learn to appreciate it."
"Oh." The little ghost nodded her head in understanding yet confusion. Upon closer inspection, it was found that this little ghost was quite different from the others outside. The ghosts outside only looked like human silhouettes, with their facial features completely blurred, and immersed in their own world, unable to communicate with others. But this little banshee, although pale all over, had clear features, good looks, and looked about ten years old. She appeared innocent and adorable, and had no difficulty communicating with the living beings. "Uncle, can I hide here for a while? There are many, many bad men in iron clothes outside, a lot of uncles, and aunties have been killed, I’ll just hide for a little while, I promise not to make a sound."
"Of course." Pannis became speechless after hearing the little banshee’s request. Only when he saw the little girl become more and more disappointed, almost crying, did he hastily reply, "You can hide here as long as you want, and you don’t have to stay quiet. It’s very safe here."
"Really? Great." The little banshee bowed politely to Pannis, "Thank you, uncle. Oh, and thank you, aunties."
"This is nothing like the Undead I imagined." Catherine lowered her voice and whispered quietly, "And she’s so polite."
"I didn’t expect it either." Pannis said, "I can’t imagine there’s such an Undead. Most of them lack their original consciousness, they hate living creatures madly. This one might be a real exception."
"So we just ignore her for now?" Catherine asked, "Is it fine?"
"If you ask me, I have no idea." Pannis smiled bitterly, "It’s my first time encountering such a situation. But I think it should be fine, she seems very well-behaved."
"Okay, let’s get back to business." Catherine put the matter with the little banshee aside, "What are you planning to do?"
"I’m thinking about it." Pannis scratched his chin, slightly troubled, "This is really difficult."
"What is it?" Lina leaned in curiously, "You and big sis have been acting mysterious, like you’re solving a puzzle. What are you really planning to do by insisting on staying here?"
"You don’t know either?" Dora asked in surprise, "Looking at how much you guys supported his decision to stay, I thought you had discussed it."
"Just because I don’t know doesn’t mean I can’t support it," Lina said, "He must have a good reason for wanting to stay here. Why would I object?"
"Alright, you win, I give up." Dora lowered her head in defeat.
"Actually, I hinted at it before. This is Briana." Pannis pointed to the ruined city outside, "The abandoned city of Briana, seven hundred years ago, it was the southern border of the Naren Empire."
"Naren Empire?" Vivian furrowed her brow in thought, "Isn’t our treasure hunt related to the Naren Empire? But I don’t remember any connection between the treasure and a city named Briana."
"Huh, you guys are looking for the treasure of the Naren Empire?" Dora heard it and caught on quickly, "I heard hundreds of years ago many people tried looking for it but no one found it."
"Umm," Vivian covered her mouth, a despondent whimper escaping her lips, "Uh-oh, I accidentally spilled the beans, sorry, big sis."
"Haha, no matter." Catherine casually waved her hand and said, "She’ll find out sooner or later if she travels with us."
"That’s good." Vivian sighed in relief, spread her hands towards Pannis: "I can’t figure it out, where does Briana come from?"
"I remember now." Lina’s eyes brightened, and she clapped her hands: "Ah, I understand. Pannis, it must have been difficult for you to remember. But, how did you know this is Briana City?"
"Of course I remember, didn’t Catherine recognize it clearly when I mentioned Briana?" Pannis replied: "As for identifying this as Briana City, I just happened to compare our current location with the historic map of Naren Kingdom in my mind. I was thinking about the possible location of the treasure, but then I found that this city is on the southern border of Naren Kingdom. As we entered the city, we passed by a street, and the stone marker by the road was inscribed with ’Malt Beer Street’. Then, on the same street, I found number forty-one. Luckily, only half of the building had collapsed, and I could barely see the nameplate of the resident on the wall of the entrance to the other half."
"Ah, I finally understand." Vivian strained one of her neurons, "You mean the diary? The two dead people in the research institute?"
"Exactly them." Pannis said: "It’s the dead’s request."
"No wonder Catherine remembered it all at once." Vivian nodded vigorously: "It’s to do with a reward of twenty thousand gold coins."
"Hey." Catherine pulled Vivian over and knocked on Vivian’s head: "I’m telling you to not talk nonsense, stop talking nonsense."
"Ah, stop knocking." Vivian dodged while covering her head: "I was wrong, I know you remember it because you want the dead to rest in peace. There, I said it, now stop knocking!"
"You’re hopeless." Catherine laughed helplessly and looked at Pannis: "You’ve likely been thinking about this all night. Have you come up with a good way to find the banshee? Furthermore, are you sure such a small child can become an undead?"
"Well, see for yourself." Pannis pointed to the little banshee sitting quietly in the corner: "This banshee is also that tiny, hasn’t she become an undead?"
"Um, that’s true." Catherine observed the banshee with interest for a while. Making the banshee uncomfortable and fidgety, she then turned around and said: "What about the problem of finding someone?"
"I have no clue." Pannis shrugged: "I am not omnipotent. The current situation is too far from what I imagined. The method I originally thought of is totally impracticable."
"What were you thinking?" Catherine asked, "Let’s hear it, it might work."
"It’s impossible." Pannis shook his head: "I originally thought we could wait for the ghosts to appear, then bypass the wandering undead, sneak into the vicinity of the target residence. Normally, if she has become an undead, she should be roaming in her home. In this way, we can find her. But, who would have expected so many ghosts running everywhere. It’s impossible to find her."
Catherine also sighed, realizing the method indeed was implausible. Skipping that unworkable method, she continued to ask: "Leaving aside the issue of finding the person, let’s say you do find her, how do you awaken her? You must not forget, the ghosts are in a state of frenzy, and they don’t have a normal consciousness."
"This is easy." Pannis rummaged around in his bag, pulling out the diary: "When the time comes, display this diary and the memory crystal pendant from your bag in front of her, then call out her name and her parents’ names. This should awaken her past memories. Even if she is still young and it’s not easy to awaken her, don’t forget what was written in the diary, she has a grandmother too. If all efforts fail to regain their memories and let them recover their consciousness, we’ll have Lina purify them so they can rest in peace. But that’ll be our last resort."
"Oh yes, I almost forgot." Catherine lightly tapped her head: "She has a grandmother. What’s her name again?"
"Let me see." Pannis flipped through the diary, looking for it: "Here it is. The grandmother is called Gliss and the little girl is called Annie."
"Eh." The little banshee who had been sitting in the corner cried out in surprise all at once.
Pannis’s eyes lit up, everyone’s eyes lit up, and eight pairs of eyes focused on the little banshee squarely. They all thought of one neglected question. They have a native little banshee here that they can communicate with normally. They don’t need to go through all the effort to find someone; they can simply ask her for the direction.
"Little girl." Pannis approached the little banshee with a soft smile, squatting down to look directly into her somewhat alarmed and frightened eyes, and let the tender look in his eyes gradually reach her heart. Looking at Pannis’s gentle eyes, the little banshee, who was initially trembling out of fear, relaxed a bit, and she wasn’t as nervous anymore.
Pannis secretly nodded in satisfaction. Very slowly, he reached out and gently placed his hand on the little banshee’s head. The banshee’s soul was much sturdier than a ghost’s, it even felt solid. And other than the cold temperature, it was no different from patting a normal person. Comforted by the gentle stroking by Pannis, the little banshee didn’t evade. The warmth of the living brought never-before-felt warmth to the banshee, who lived in eternal coldness. The comforting feeling made the little banshee squint her eyes like a kitten, moaning joyously.
"Little girl, why are you alone here." Pannis kept his voice as calm and tender as possible: "Where is your family?"
"I do not know." The little banshee said dejectedly, shaking her head: "My father and mother have forsaken me. Granny said if I behave well they’d be back soon. I’ve honestly been very well-behaved, but they never returned."
"Poor child." Pannis sighed softly: "Could you tell me if you know Annie, a little girl about your age? Her grandma is called Gliss, she is a...well, a kind grandmother."
"Yes, I know her." The little banshee raised her head, blinking her colorless big eyes: "That is me, I’m Annie, and my grandmother is Gliss."
