In Lina’s grayscale vision, the newly appeared magical beast was somewhat different from the previous three that she had killed. Apart from its slightly slender and streamlined body, the greatest difference was its tail. Unlike the thick and tapering meaty tail that lizard-like magical beasts normally had, the tail of this earth walker beast had a sharp, curved hook formed of bone at its end, very much like a scorpion’s tail. The sharp end of the black stinger gleamed ominously.
"Beware of its tail." Lina lowered her center of gravity slightly, hammer in her right hand, and her left hand forming a rune held in front of her chest. She slowly retreated, standing back-to-back with Pannis. "Its tail is like a scorpion’s, I suspect it’s highly venomous."
"That’s bloody marvelous." Pannis’ hands hung naturally at his sides, and he seemed to be standing casually, with no guard up, but the expression on his face was serious. "Its speed is incredible, but the good news seems to be that its strength is relatively weaker."
"Can you see it?" Lina asked, somewhat unsure.
"Invisibility detection potion, a product of Vivian’s Potion Shop, the best choice for adventurers." Pannis’ eyes followed the movement of the earth walker, and he tossed an empty bottle he was holding into the air.
"Can you slow it down for a few seconds?" Lina maintained the spell mark in her hand. "I can’t cast a spell at its current speed."
"I should be able to, let me give it a shot." Pannis nodded after a moment’s consideration.
"When the time comes, I can release a divine spell to immobilize it. Given its power, I can restrict its movements for about five seconds; during that time, it will be completely immobilized." Leaning against Pannis’ back, Lina’s spell mark began to glow faintly. "Can you break through its defenses and kill it within those five seconds?"
"Five seconds is plenty." Pannis assured confidently. "If it can’t move, I wouldn’t need more than three seconds to kill it."
"Then let’s get started." Lina said. "Go ahead when you’re ready. I can release the divine spell at any time."
"Then let me show you how a magic swordsman fights." Pannis drew a one-handed sword, chuckled lightly, and suddenly lunged forward.
Magic Swordsman is an unusual profession on the Yarran Continent. As Lina had once said, this profession entails the simultaneous mastery of magic and aggression. But one’s energy is limited, and trying to excel in both usually results in mastery of neither. Most Magic Swordsmen, therefore, choose to focus on one area, with some choosing to emphasize martial skill and others magic.
However, such magic swordsmen are really just swordsmen who know a few spells or mages who know a few martial techniques; they completely deviate from the essence of being a magic swordsman. Like Farkas, whom they had met in the Crying Cave, the primary skill was of a swordsman. Although he could cast a few spells of destruction and had an endless supply of energy for casting spells temporarily from the research institute, without this energy supply, he would revert to his true form and dare not cast spells at will. Most of the magic swordsmen in the world are similar, the rest are greedy failures who wanted to have it all but ended up achieving nothing. This has created an illusion among people that the profession of magic swordsman is in itself a ridiculous one. But this is only an illusion, true magic swordsmen are those rare geniuses who successfully manage both aspects.
True magic swordsmen often do not specialize in destructive spells; instead, they focus on swordsmanship and primarily learn auxiliary and control spells in magic. In a fight, they can choose the most suitable time to cast a spell to boost themselves, and they can also cast spells to interfere with the opponent at the most critical moment.
Fighting against a true magic swordsman is a headache, as you can never guess what they will do next. One moment you have adapted to their speed, and the next they might swing a sword at you that is one-third faster. Or you might be just about to dodge their attack, but suddenly find your speed inexplicably slowed. These unpredictable tactics can make the enemy cringe. However, the high difficulty in mastering these makes them few and far between, and this has caused them to slowly fade into obscurity.
Despite the small numbers, there is no doubt that Pannis was always one of them.
Halfway out, Pannis suddenly speeded up, rushing to the edge of the rock wall in an instant. He fiercely kicked the wall, using the rapid speed to bounce back and forth between the opposing rock walls like the earth walker. He quickly reached the top of the cavern, circling around with the earth walker.
Seemingly seeing a prey that can keep up with its own speed for the first time, the earth walker cautiously launched several probing attacks with the acid sprayed from its head and tongue from its mouth. However, Pannis easily dodged or parried them all. The failure of attacks made the earth walker even more cautious so it stopped even its tentative attacks, focusing only on movement as it sought an opportunity.
