World's Last Hope-Chapter 100: Unstoppable Force
Eric’s sword flashed with blazing speed as he cut through the first spider. He didn’t take even a second to step back, in order to avoid the monster’s acidic blood falling on him.
The ground beneath his feet shook as another explosion, caused by Olivia’s bow, evaporated more of the spiders.
It seemed she had judged that using her weapon from afar was the most effective way to defeat as many spiders as possible.
Because she wanted a better view of the area, she jumped to about half the height of the wall, then grabbed it with her left hand and propelled herself upwards.
The moment she appeared at the top of the wall, she had a better view. As such, she was able to fire more freely, now that she didn’t have to worry about accidentally hitting one of her comrades.
Meanwhile, Aria had dug her feet so deep into the ground that she shattered it. Then, she ran multiple times faster than an arrow, jumping into the middle of the mass of spiders and began cutting through them, dozens with each slash.
Eric spared her a look, and his heart began to beat faster.
Sure, she might have been a Grandmaster while he was just a Master, but he didn’t want to be left behind. So, he began to push his body even harder, trying everything he could to surpass his limits.
Before, when he fought, each time he slashed, he needed a second to adjust his grip and footing before slashing again. But now, thanks to Grandmaster Gryndor’s training, his slashes began to flow from one to another seamlessly, without any break in between.
Even though he was fighting for his life, from the side, it looked like he was dancing among the countless corpses around him.
A truly cursed dance of death.
His eyes widened for a moment as the arrows flying above his head obscured the sun for a second, making it harder to see.
But he tried not to be bothered by that and just killed everything in sight.
There was a spider that seemed to have snuck past Eric’s back and was about to attack.
Eric knew it was too late to dodge or parry, so he prepared himself mentally for taking the hit.
The spider lunged forward with its jaws open, ready to tear him apart. But before the monster could reach him, its head was split open.
Eric’s eyes widened as he saw Master Varek emerge from the countless bodies.
"Boy, I got your back, you got mine!"
Eric smiled, as there wasn’t anything more that needed to be said. Everything was already clear to both men.
Taking advantage of the ally who had joined him, he stopped watching his back, leaving it to Varek, while Varek did the same.
Suddenly, the bodies around both of them seemed to increase.
Now that both of the Masters weren’t worried about protecting their backs, they could focus entirely on killing what was in front of them.
’How are the others doing?’ Eric asked himself for a second.
He was a Master, but there were about a thousand awakened here. They didn’t have his well-trained body and didn’t even have powerful miracle weapons like him, so they had to rely on the mass-produced silver weapons. As a result, they were in much more danger than him or Master Varek.
But unfortunately, Eric was still too weak. He might be able to somehow survive the situation, but he still lacked the strength to protect others and himself at the same time.
"Don’t think, just kill," he muttered to himself.
In situations like this, he was thankful for the curse of his sword. If he surrendered to the desire, it would be the most beneficial, as his priority would become to first survive and second stop the siege.
Worrying about others when he barely managed to stay afloat among the monsters could only doom him now.
So, he gritted his teeth, ignoring the cries of pain around him as he surrendered to his desires and began his killing spree.
Varek threw a quick glance at Eric. The man’s eyes seemed to shine brighter than Varek had ever seen, and there was foam falling from the corners of his mouth.
Varek would have been worried, if not for the fact that the speed with which Eric was killing the spiders had almost doubled. So, the man didn’t interfere as he let him continue his killing spree uninterrupted.
His focus shifted from killing the spiders to protecting Eric and his blind spots. This was the more efficient method, as the cursed one seemed to be able to become a killing machine at will.
’Does he have some kind of berserker skill?’ Varek asked himself but shook his head, thinking now would only slow him down.
The air around them seemed to get even harder to breathe. Varek felt his feet burn. He shifted his gaze downward for a moment and then grimaced.
Because they were surrounded by the bodies of hundreds of fallen spiders, their blood had begun to spread all around the ground, making it impossible to avoid.
As a result, his metal boots had already started to melt, and his feet would soon be melted as well.
The man questioned his judgment on whether it was a good idea to fight so far from the others, but then he heard Eric’s battle roar.
The cursed one’s feet must have felt his feet being melted as well, yet his speed and brutality only increased.
Then Varek shifted his gaze to the gates.
There, the awakened were battling the spiders. From the looks of it, there were a few casualties, but far fewer than he would have expected.
A second later, he realized the reason.
Grandmaster Aria was battling the monsters from the right of the gates, stopping their advance.
Grandmaster Olivia was using her bow to get rid of the ones on the left of the gates.
But what about the front, across the gates, where most of the awakened were located?
He and Eric were the ones at the very front, halting the spiders and not permitting most of them to move forward.
If he and Eric retreated, it would mean that all of these spiders would attack the vulnerable awakened, which would lead to a devastating amount of casualties.
Each man, lost in the apocalypse, meant that they were even closer to losing the city.
A spider was about to attack Eric from his blind spot, but Varek slit it in two before it could reach the man.
Varek felt it—because he and Eric were at the very front, slaying most of the spiders, the gazes of everyone behind them were on them, some looking at them with admiration, others with fear, wondering how humans were able to move at such speed and cause such destruction.
Feeling his heart beat faster, Varek smiled before he could even realize.
’This feeling... it’s like I’m young again!’
The old man seemed to forget about his injured old body as he increased his speed even more. In response, Eric picked up the speed yet again.
At this moment, the two of them were a meat grinder, and the spiders were the meat.
