Chapter 41: A Sudden Fever

I looked ahead again, to the monster approaching me. For some reason, its multiple eyes were focused on me. I’m not sure why, but it’s not a great feeling.

I channeled all my remaining mana into my eyes and used it to aim at the target. I can’t create magic spells like Allen that lock up his target, or do what Noir does when he uses Puppeteer. Setting up a range is difficult since I can’t measure how far or near the monster is because of its massive size.

Is it only massive because it’s already near? I can’t be sure of that, and I don’t want to waste my remaining energy on what’s uncertain.

So, the only thing I can do is to do it like this—using my eyes to lock up the target—as simple as that.

I could feel the corner of my eyes watered. I couldn’t blink, since I had a feeling that if I did, the monster would be freed. A bout of relief washed through me when I noticed its movement slowed down and the lights on its body slowly died one at a time.

In my peripheral vision, I could see the other members attacking, supporting Terrius and Claude to do whatever they intended to do. Finally, after several more minutes, the boss monster’s body sagged, then it fell into the water, creating a huge wave.

My feet moved a few meters as I tried to fight the gust of wind and prepared myself for a tidal wave, but then suddenly, my body was floating.

I looked behind me after I sensed someone’s presence, but my sight was immediately blocked by someone’s chest. I was hugged, tightly. I smacked the back of this guy who smelled fishy and damp repeatedly until I heard him complain.

"Ow, Jade, it hurts."

I looked up at Allen. He was grimacing, but when our eyes met, his face brightened. I pushed him away slightly as I replied, "Glad you’re okay. I thought you were a goner."

Allen smiled, a forced one. What? Did he get upset after I called him a goner? I opened my mouth to take back what I said, but then his head suddenly came closer, so close my eyes crossed from looking at him.

His forehead bumped mine. I frowned. "What the fuck are you trying to do?"

I’m not going to take it back. So much for being considerate of his feelings, tsk. Should have called him a goner again.

"You have a fever," Allen mumbled, his face full of shock.

What was so shocking about that? It’s normal to get a fever when you’ve been in the water for a long time. Not to mention, lying on the cold floor drenched. I might also develop pneumonia if we stayed a bit longer here.

Now that the boss monster is dead, we only need to wait until the exit appears and then, we’ll leave.

"What are you doing?" Claude’s voice interrupted us. I leaned back, tearing my forehead away from Allen who was staring at me like he saw a ghost. Wait, did he?

"Am I dead?" I muttered.

"What the fuck are you saying?" Claude grabbed the back of my collar and pulled me further away from Allen. He gave Allen a commanding look and said, "The scavenger team will need your assistance to get those scales from the monster’s corpse."

Allen paused, clearly unamused.

Claude raised his brow. "You’re the only one here who hasn’t reached a certain level of dark energy after receiving Jade’s help. And it will be faster if you help those guys."

Allen flinched. He looked dejected and regretful. Claude smirked. I knew he was trying to guilt-trip Allen, but I didn’t say anything. I felt a bit uncomfortable with him right now, to be honest.

Allen glanced at me, before nodding, and flew to the scavenger team.

Claude let go of my collar. "You’re flushed."

"I think I’m going down with a fever."

"A...what?"

"A fever...?" I answered, uncertain. "Why do you and Allen seem taken aback? Is a Seeker having a fever unheard of?"

Claude stared at me.

He turned his head to the left, then he looked up, his hands cupping the lower part of his face. Disbelief was etched on his face. Then, he ran his hand over his face completely and exhaled loudly.

"Jade. What else do you feel?"

"What do you mean?"

Claude pressed his lips tightly. Then, he said with difficulty, "Like...you wanted to release something? Something like that..."

My eyes widened. "Well, yes, that’s exactly what I’m feeling right now. My body’s trembling from restraining myself from scratching my skin or poking my throat inside so I can puke, or...or...pee..."

My body stiffened after realizing what Claude was trying to tell me. How could I have forgotten the Book of Minders I read before?

The book explained the symptoms Minders feel whenever they succeeded in sucking the dark energy of their Seeker. The hot sensation coursing inside their veins was contaminated energy that needed to be released to avoid their destruction.

All the ways Minders must do to release that energy replayed in my head, unwillingly. I pictured myself in the worst way possible, and my face paled considerably.

Masturbating doesn’t embarrass me. It’s a human nature to seek pleasure. What’s embarrassing is when someone knows that you’re about to do it.

I glanced at Claude. He looked away almost immediately. Damn it. I could feel the heat rose to my ear, not because of the fever.

"No way. That can’t be. You’re probably just mistaken, captain. I’m a Seeker. A Seeker can’t be a Minder, right? It’s not possible! I’ve never encountered something like that in all the books I read in the NSA library," I rambled. My voice sounded shaky like I was going to cry anytime soon.

Claude scratched his head, still not looking at my way. He wasn’t convinced. I suddenly wanted to kick him in the face for reminding me. My mind wouldn’t have gone there if he hadn’t asked me in the first place!

Now, the possibility that he may be right wouldn’t leave my mind. What am I supposed to do? If this happens every time I try to help them lower their dark energy level, then...I...

"I’ll bring you something to drink," Claude said and turned away. He stopped after a few steps and added, "Oh. Don’t drink the flood water."

He turned away immediately. My nose flared after realizing how his shoulder trembled. He was making fun of me!
