Chapter 36: Scripts (5/8)
QUAKE!
A strong, unnatural earthquake struck and shook the entire mountain of skull vigorously. It was so strong that it sent the entire crew tumbling to the ground, wounding some in the process.
"What the heck!"
Alister was not exempted from the powerful earthquake. The hero lost his footing and fell on his butt in the midst of dozens of undead creatures fiercely trying to avenge the death of their comrades.
The sudden earthquake was unpredicted — it rendered Alister completely defenseless for a few seconds.
On the other hand, the undead seem fine — they took the opportunity handed to them seriously and ganged in on the defenseless hero.
Multiple enraged shrieks tore through the sound barrier in the tunnel.
"Fuck!"
Alister cussed and acted as fast as he could before the enraged undead got him. He picked up the sword and swung it swiftly at the strong bony arm of a towering undead launching down at him, shattering it.
But that wasn’t the only attack, as the other ones clawed down on him.
Alister gritted his teeth and rolled away from some of the attacks. But the undead simply lifted their heavy bony legs and attempted pounding him to bits.
Loud thuds escaped as so many attacks missed and clashed with the rough tunnel ground. The strength behind those attacks left shallow dents on the extremely hard ground.
Alister kept cussing while trying his hardest to evade all the attacks launched at him.
He was placed in a defensive position, a position he wasn’t so familiar with. Alister made a note to himself to allocate as many points as he could into the defense stats.
His current situation made him regret not investing much when he had the chance and it cost him multiple new wounds.
Alister winced painfully as he made all the attempts to evade numerous attacks while trying to regain footing.
After several attempts and injuries, Alister managed to get back on his feet. The pain from the new injuries kicked in right away, making movement a difficult and painful task for him.
But he continued swinging his sword. Although slower than his peak state, the swings were still strong enough to slaughter his adversaries.
Alister slaughtered through a straight path of monsters before his eyes spotted the glowing magic formation, surrounded by the crew members who struggled back on their feet.
"So that was the cause," Alister noted.
Unfortunately, his attention was quickly seized by the undead and he went straight into combat mode.
"What is happening!"
Theobald asked as he struggled back on his feet.
"Is it awakening another army of strong abnormalities?"
"I knew it would not turn out well."
"I think I dislocated my shoulder. It’s painful!"
The other soldiers commented, some lamenting the injury incurred due to the sudden powerful earthquake.
King Julian was already standing, two soldiers aided him from behind. His eyes were glued on the glowing formation.
Osborne was still on the ground, his aged body was badly hurt due to the fall.
Nevertheless, he did not take his eyes off the glowing magic formation, not even for a single second.
So many predicting thoughts ran through his head.
BOOM!
Under their confused gazes, the magic formation suddenly exploded into an even brighter glow, blinding them. Accompanying the blinding glow was a sharp, ominous sound.
The blinding light overpowered the glow of the lantern and spread across the tunnel.
The sharp, ominous sound drifted through the confined space. The sound was extremely piercing, it resulted in a peculiar pain in the ears of those who heard it.
The crew had to shield their eyes to prevent being blinded by the light.
Alister was faraway, still engaged in combat with the reduced population of the undead army when the sharp glow and sound bombarded his being.
The light blinded him, taking away an important aspect of his strength as he could no longer see his opponents.
The piercing sound also resulted in a sharp pain within his brain that made focus impossible.
Alister’s heart skipped a beat, horror took a grip on his soul and the hero felt so close to death’s door at that moment.
With his vision and hearing gone, how would he fight against the undead army?
There was simply no way he could fight, he was as good as dead!
SHRIEKKKKK!!!!!!!!
The undead army suddenly began to screech very loudly.
However, instead of anger, this shriek was filled with horror and anguish.
Alister’s heartbeat intensified and he quickly clutched his sword and began swinging it around with all his strength, even though he could not see.
But the blade of his sword simply cut through empty air, confusing him.
Before he could question his situation, the loud horrifying shrieks died down abruptly. Quickly accompanied by numerous bones scattering on the ground.
Alister did not need an extra explanation to understand that the undead creatures surrounding him had miraculously met their end, hence while his attacks were futile.
While he was confused as to what might have slaughtered them so fast, he was insanely grateful.
The blinding glow and the deafening sound were still echoing across the confinement of the tunnel.
Alister and the others shielded their eyes from the blinding light, unaware of the supernatural phenomenon unfolding.
The magic formation continued to glow fiercely when, suddenly, a small orb of pale blue light materialized, hovering inches above the circle.
At first, the orb spun slowly, but its rotation gradually quickened with each passing moment.
It also began to expand.
What had started as a barely visible dot now swelled to the size of a newborn, forming a perfect sphere.
Within seconds, it had grown so large that three adults could stand within its radius with room to spare.
After a while, the swirling mass finally formed into its full shape.
After it formed, the blinding light vanished. The crystal lantern quickly resumed its job of illuminating the dark confinement of the tunnel.
However, its illumination was partially useless as the crew’s eyes were now glued on the light blue fast-spinning vortex.
Osborne’s eyes widened as he struggled back on his feet.
"Spatial magic...I actually opened a portal," the old wizard with a shaky voice.
