Work Prophet-Chapter 905 - 70: Prometheus on the Cliff
"You betrayed your people, destroyed our civilization!"
After receiving the alarm, Taylor, Mr. Qin, and the other five directors immediately rushed to the headquarters nestled in Buzhou Mountain at the fastest speed possible.
But when they arrived and saw the scene inside Lab No. 2, they instantly fell into a fit of rage.
Li Yu didn't speak, just sat at the laboratory door, feeling a bit drowsy at the moment.
First, it was because the continuous battles earlier had drained him physically, and second, because the last stone in his heart had finally settled.
Just three minutes ago, he had successfully destroyed the headless giant corpse in the lab, thwarting the Third Epoch's salvation plan.
Li Yu didn't seize the remaining time to escape, not just because he was out of strength but because he knew there was no escape route left for him.
"Why did you do this?" Taylor asked, her face ashen. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"For the past six months, I've been working almost all the time. The longest continuous work stretch exceeded a hundred days." Li Yu said, "I want weekends off."
"So all this is just for weekends off?" Bernard couldn't believe his ears.
"Our world is about to end, and at a time like this, you are still calculating your goddamned weekends off?" Windsor also raged.
"You're not the first person to say this to me. At every company I've worked for, my bosses told me that if I couldn't finish my work before the deadline, the world would end, so I maintained an intense work state for a long time.
"If one day I didn't work overtime and my boss found out, he'd think my workload wasn't enough, assigning me more tasks."
"Honestly, at the beginning, I thought this matter would be difficult for me, but in fact, I quite enjoyed it during the process; I couldn't deceive myself." Li Yu said.
"You are the meanest, most selfish, cruelest, and most irrational madman I've ever seen!!!" Windsor shrieked, "You've doomed us all!!! All of us!!! You are a traitor to humanity; everyone will spit on you!!!"
"I know." Li Yu didn't deny it. "But haven't you ever felt like that, after several days of continuous overtime, returning home late every day.
"So exhausted that you just collapse onto the bed, too tired to even undress, wishing you could fall asleep immediately. But because of all the coffee and tea consumed during the day, your nerves are completely disrupted, making it impossible for your brain to secrete melatonin properly.
"You're dead tired. But can't fall asleep no matter what, then you start frequently checking your phone because in just a few hours, you have to go to work again, and the time left for sleep is dwindling.
"For a moment, the evil part inside you awakens, thinking how wonderful it would be if the world ended tomorrow morning, so you wouldn't have to work anymore."
"Incomprehensible." Taylor said coldly.
"Forget it, you all look like the kind of bosses who would call employees during vacation demanding they return to work early, so you surely wouldn't have thoughts like that."
"You should feel shame and remorse." Mr. Qin said, "Instead of standing here spouting nonsense."
"Indeed I do feel guilty, but not towards you or those twenty million who couldn't escape, and your arrival has interrupted the guilt I was brewing."
By now, Taylor had lost interest in engaging with Li Yu, turning to Dr. Robbin beside her, "Have you estimated the losses this time? And are there any remedial measures?"
Robbin shook his head, "Other damages aren't too bad; with some time, they can be repaired, but the most crucial battery was destroyed. We can no longer leave the Earth. Reluctantly admitting, but our civilization has indeed reached its end.
"Perhaps I can use some other methods, utilizing newly developed materials to store some faith. But... "
The old man adjusted his glasses, his voice tinged with helplessness, "With only the faith generated from our own universe field, it can barely sustain this virtual world for one to two months, then the extreme cold will descend, destroying everything."
His words plunged everyone present into silence.
After a moment, Taylor resolutely said, "Then initiate the final backup plan, we can't count on the Ark anymore. Let's use the Rebirth Bell to send important individuals from various countries to another plane.
"If it's two months, we should still be able to send away sixty people."
Yet, Li Yu, standing nearby, had already taken off his suit and placed it by the door, "You all can find someone else for this work; I'm done."
"I never intended to give this job to you." Taylor's voice was very cold, "Have Shi Yitong come to my office in half an hour, as for you..."
Taylor's gaze fell back on Li Yu, "You don't think this matter ends so simply, do you?
"You've just betrayed your people, destroyed the world. You can't just dust off and go home, pretending nothing happened, comfortably spending the last two months—it doesn't work like that."
"What punishment does the board intend to give me?"
Mr. Qin said, "Do you remember the warning I gave you a few months ago when you came to my manor?
"Don't think having the Rebirth ability means we can't do anything to you. We'll lock you in an iron crate and throw it into the deep sea.
"When the oxygen in the crate runs out, you'll experience death, but because of Rebirth, you'll come back to life, experiencing the suffocation pain over and over, repeating endlessly until the end of the world."
"I haven't tried this trick yet, it sounds quite interesting." Li Yu said.
Sergei grinned, "It's more than interesting, I guarantee you'll fall in love with this feeling. I really hope you can hold out until the day of apocalypse comes, rather than going insane too soon; that would lessen my fun."
After he finished speaking, two guards approached, grabbing Li Yu, who was still seated on the ground, and putting handcuffs on him.
Li Yu was escorted out of the Third Epoch headquarters, brought to the seaside, and boarded a cruise ship.
The cruise sailed at sea for seven days. To prevent Li Yu from using the Transformation Technique, during this time, he was given just enough food and water to sustain his life.
So much so that by the time he was placed inside the iron crate, he had grown emaciated to the point of seeing bones beneath his skin.
Sergei followed alongside Li Yu the whole time, supervising his escort to ensure he wouldn't escape. Once the cruise reached unpopulated waters, Sergei ordered the iron crate to be sealed.
Before it was dumped into the sea, he knocked on the thick iron plate, speaking to the person trapped inside.
"Enjoy your journey, if you can still enjoy it twelve minutes from now."
