Wizard: Adventures in Two Worlds-Chapter 649 - 7: Nightwatcher
Barro opened his eyes, greeted by the sight of white walls and various kinds of life-monitoring instruments.
The smell of disinfectant...
Must be in a hospital.
I didn’t die?
A feeling of relief from surviving a catastrophe rose in his heart.
"You’re awake."
A burly man approached, glanced at him, and placed a cup of water on the table beside him:
"How do you feel?"
"It’s you!"
Barro recognized the man, the odd character who seemed unscathed when his heart was pierced by a dark tentacle.
"Let me introduce myself." The burly man reached out:
"Nightwatcher Chris."
Nightwatcher?
Barro’s eyes showed confusion, then as if realizing something, he suddenly sat up from the bed with wide eyes:
"What happened to the lab?"
"There was a fire in the lab, and everything inside was burned." Chris shrugged:
"Don’t worry, the investigation shows it was an accident, the loss for BHP Group will be compensated by the insurance company."
"Hmm..."
He rubbed his stubbled chin and said:
"The insurance company seems to also belong to BHP Group."
"Accident?" Barro looked surprised:
"Wasn’t it that monster..."
"There’s no such thing as monsters." Chris smiled:
"At least in the eyes of ordinary people, it is."
"No monsters?" For a moment, Barro almost thought the past few days were just a dream, but soon he realized it was not a dream, but something that truly happened, and couldn’t help asking:
"What’s on me?"
"A sort of parasitic monster." Chris pulled over a chair to sit down, took out a cigar, cut it, and put it in his mouth:
"It’s said to be an alien creature, who knows where it’s from."
Parasitic monster?
Alien creature?
Barro’s eyes showed bewilderment.
"Here you go."
Chris handed over a cup, Barro instinctively received it, feeling its weight, he tightened his grip.
The scene made Chris’s gaze flicker slightly.
"You’ve already encountered the other side of the world, so it doesn’t matter if I tell you."
"Outside of what ordinary people perceive as ’the world’, there are many ’things’ that defy ’common sense’."
The cigar lit, smoke curling up, Chris’s leisurely voice came through:
"This world is very complex, with all sorts of monsters, strange and curious tools, mysterious and eerie presences..."
"They exist in the gaps among humans."
"The parasitic monster attached to you is one of them, controlled remotely by a mother body, it possesses powers, speed, and recovery ability far beyond ordinary people."
"Parasitic monster?" Barro instinctively touched his neck and breathed a sigh of relief after confirming there was no injury, asking:
"If the monsters you speak of are all as strong as that thing, why do they hide?"
"Because of us." Chris chuckled:
"Nightwatchers."
"We are the guardians of order, monster slayers, human protectors, defenders of history..."
"Heh heh..."
With the cigar between his fingers, he chuckled:
"Doesn’t it give a strong sense of mission?"
Uh...
Barro chuckled dryly.
"Parasitic monsters are the lowest level of monsters; even ordinary people have a chance to deal with them." Chris sighed:
"The truly terrifying beings..."
"They can distort time, alter history, deny common sense, maybe this world was even created by some monster."
"Ah!" Barro stared, mouth agape.
"Let’s not talk about this for now." Chris waved his hand, dispersing the smoke in front of him, saying:
"Young man, you’re about to graduate, have you found a job position that meets your expectations?"
"Professor Karl said I can continue working in the lab, or he can write a recommendation to a company under BHP Group." Barro replied:
"It should still be in the research field."
"Not bad," Chris nodded:
"What’s the monthly salary?"
"Can be two thousand pounds."
"Interested in becoming a Nightwatcher? Basic salary of four thousand pounds, bonuses for missions and housing allowances, averaging six thousand income per month, after taxes."
Six thousand post-tax income!
In Fast City, that definitely belongs to the high-income group.
Barro’s breath caught, but thinking of the possible encounters, his heart suddenly grew wary.
"Forget it!"
"I’m just an ordinary person."
"Ordinary person?"
Chris took the cup from Barro’s hand and lightly tossed it to the ground.
"Bang!"
Like a hundred-pound object falling to the ground, the hard floor was actually dented.
"This thing, ordinary people certainly cannot hold."

This is not a hospital but a certain underground base of the Nightwatchers, Chris said.
Walking out of the room, it was a long corridor.
The corridor was made of some unknown metallic material, giving a feeling of solidity, indestructibility.
"Transcendent abilities usually come from inheriting bloodlines or contact with certain special items."
Chris walked, talking:
"A very small part can be obtained through learning, training."
"Learning can result in transcendent abilities?" Barro looked surprised.
"Of course."
Chris nodded:
"Extraordinary power is not something new, some Holy Knights and Mages in ancient times were real."
"However, not everyone can gain extraordinary abilities through learning; such cases are very rare."
"The Nightwatchers have a legacy left by the Church from hundreds of years ago, but only a very few can succeed in training."
"What about you?" Barro nodded and asked:
"Where did you get your powers?"
"Some kind of Curios." Chris shrugged:
"I accidentally swallowed something as a child, and then I had the ability to manipulate flesh."
Manipulate flesh?
Barro looked at the man’s body, nodding thoughtfully. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Chris’s strength, speed, and recovery power were extremely strong; even a heart piercing couldn’t kill him.
It should be the effect of special abilities.
"That one!"
Pointing to the handsome blond man playing with a pen not far away, Chris said:
"Golden-haired’s ability is ’Weapon Connection,’ inherited from his grandfather."
"Some abilities can be bestowed upon others."
Weapon Connection?
Barro turned his head, seeing ’Golden-haired’ nod in acknowledgment, while the pen in his hand floated in midair and spun around him.
!
My gosh!
Barro’s eyes widened in amazement.
"Diana, Mind Perception, you can understand it as Mind Reading Technique; just by making eye contact, you can know what others think."
?
Barro instinctively lowered his head, which elicited a burst of laughter.
"Your ability is rather special, acquired through Gene Modification, which is currently the research direction of the Night Watch Organization."
Chris said:
"Some people want to create a Transcendent army, but unfortunately..."
"First, let’s test your abilities."
"Mr. Chris." Barro hurriedly said:
"I am just cooperating to test my abilities and do not intend to join the Nightwatchers."
"Of course." Chris chuckled.
But in his heart, he was dismissive.
Those who have encountered the other side of the world find it hard to return to the world of normal people, this is an iron law.
Disguising as an ordinary person means being ordinary?
Impossible!
Chris believed that sooner or later, Barro would return here and become a Nightwatcher.
