Witty Wife, Better Life-Chapter 67 - 65 Return My One Yuan
Chapter 67: Chapter 65: Return My One Yuan
Chapter 67 -65: Return My One Yuan
Shen Fuzhen, the second aunt, married Zhao Fusheng, a farmer from our village; they only have a ten-year-old son, Zhao Peng.
Zhao Fusheng was also the only child in the family. Originally, Zhao Fusheng’s mother sought to marry him off to Shen Fuzhen because she admired Fuzhen’s forthright and tough character, thinking that even with few brothers in the family, no one could bully them.
Now with three generations under one roof, five people in the family, four of whom are capable of doing hard labor, their everyday life is indeed quite good.
But maybe it was because of getting married and having a child, or maybe it’s just what happens when you settle into family life; the already bold and brash second aunt became even more so after marriage, and deep down, she was also stingy. It was not something that would just disappear because the family was doing well. When Shen Yunfang arrived at the second aunt’s house, she saw her cousin Zhao Peng playing in the yard.
As soon as Zhao Peng saw her, he picked up a clump of dirt and threw it at her.
Luckily, Shen Yunfang was quick to dodge, otherwise, being hit by such a large lump would definitely have hurt.
“Annoying brat, drink cold water, marry a woman with eight legs,” she muttered.
Shen Yunfang pursed her lips. He was just a little kid, so she decided not to stoop to his level. Besides, her first meal upon arriving here had been brought to her by this little devil, even if it was just a bowl of clear corn gruel, she remembered it well.
“What are you doing? I’m your sister, if you hit me, see if I don’t tell your mother on you,” Shen Yunfang shouted right at the doorway, “Second aunt, second aunt, I’m here. Little Peng is blocking the door and won’t let me in.”
Zhao Peng was not afraid at all. His mother didn’t like this sister either. When he bullied her in the past, his mother never scolded him. Thinking of the candy he didn’t get, Zhao Peng angrily continued to pick up dirt clods and throw them at her.
Shen Yunfang did not enter the yard but stood at the door, dodging the dirt clods Zhao Peng threw at her while calling for her second aunt.
Her shouting did indeed bring Shen Fuzhen out, but what she said first infuriated Shen Yunfang.
“What are you doing here?” As soon as Shen Fuzhen came out, she saw her son bullying her niece, but she pretended not to see it. In her mind, dirt clods couldn’t kill anyone, so what’s wrong with letting her son throw a few? He was still young, so it was only right for the elder sister to give in to her younger brother.
Instead of inviting her inside first or blaming Zhao Peng, she asked Shen Yunfang what she was here for, making clear from her tone that she did not welcome her niece.
“What am I doing here? I’m here for money,” Shen Yunfang said directly, already irritated by the mother and son’s behavior.
Shen Fuzhen’s gaze flickered as she said, “What money? You’re just a kid; don’t talk nonsense. I don’t owe you money. Even if you’re here for money, you won’t get it from me.”
“You don’t owe me money, but didn’t you go to my eldest uncle’s house yesterday and get a dollar from my eldest aunt? That’s my money, isn’t it? Shouldn’t it be given to me?” Shen Yunfang’s face was stern.

When Shen Fuzhen heard this, she realized she couldn’t keep it a secret. She quickly came up with an excuse, “Oh, I thought it was something serious. I was indeed planning to bring you the money this morning, but your brother said his stomach was hurting, so I got him some food to supplement his health. You know your brother is not well, and I’m counting on him.”
What did she mean by that? Zhao Peng wasn’t feeling well and needed to be nourished, and instead of spending her own money, she spent that of the older sister?
“Second aunt, since Zhao Peng is not feeling well, it’s only right for you to take care of him. Now that I’m here, just give me the money,” Shen Yunfang refused to follow the narrative and continued with her own demands.
Shen Fuzhen glared at her with wide eyes.
“I won’t give it to you. I just won’t. The money is all mine, and everything in your house is mine too,” Zhao Peng shouted from the side.
Seeing that her second aunt didn’t stop him, Shen Yunfang got the message. This must be the second aunt’s own thought; a child only repeats what he hears adults say at home.
“Second aunt, since I’m here, please give me back that one dollar,” Shen Yunfang insisted, choosing not to argue with a child.
“Your brother is sick, and you as his sister should buy him some nice food. Consider that one dollar as your contribution to buying food for your brother,” Shen Fuzhen stated defiantly, showing no intention of giving up the money.
Why on Earth would she bother to go to her older brother’s house and make an effort if not for some benefit? She managed to get a dollar, so how could she possibly give it back?
My niece just needs to not starve to death, that’s fine for her. But look at my son, he’s going to be somebody important in the future. If I don’t help him save every penny now, how is that going to work?
Shen Yunfang was truly amused and angered; she had never encountered such brazenness.
“Second Aunt, your Shen Yeqing is so well-off that you might not care about that bit of money, just spending it on your kid’s snacks whenever you please. I can’t afford to do that; one yuan can buy me twenty eggs, more than ten kilograms of grain, enough to keep me from starving for half a month. As a child without parents, surely you can’t take advantage of your own niece, right?” said Shen Yunfang, her voice cold.
“Nonsense, who’s taking advantage of you?” Shen Fuzhen refused to acknowledge it.
“If you’re not taking advantage, then give me back my money,” Shen Yunfang wouldn’t budge an inch.
“I already told you it’s gone, swallowed up by your brother. If you really want it back, go look for it in the latrine,” Shen Fuzhen laughed coldly, bullying Shen Yunfang because she knew she was powerless.
Shen Yunfang was so angry that she trembled. She hadn’t encountered such a situation since arriving here, and this person was her own aunt.
“Fine, if Second Aunt insists on reneging and not giving it back, then I can only ask the organization to help me resolve the issue,” Shen Yunfang said and turned to leave.
“What do you mean by that?” Shen Fuzhen wasn’t sure what she meant.
“What do I mean? If you won’t give it to me, then I’ll go to our eldest uncle to settle this matter.” After Shen Yunfang said this and saw Shen Fuzhen’s face full of disdain, it dawned on her that Shen Yeqing was her eldest uncle, but also Shen Fuzhen’s older brother.
“If even the eldest uncle can’t handle this, I’ll go to the county and find the Revolutionary Committee or the Armed Forces Department. I really want to ask what kind of crime it is to misappropriate a martyr’s family’s money. If the county doesn’t care, I’ll go to Beijing to petition. I’ll seek justice from Chairman Mao himself. I refuse to believe that there’s nowhere under heaven where I can get a fair hearing,” Shen Yunfang practically shouted these last few sentences.
From the moment she had arrived in front of Shen Fuzhen’s house, there were neighbors watching the excitement, but throughout all this time, not a single person had spoken up for her. They all thought she was just a little girl who could be easily bullied, so she’d show them that Shen Yunfang might be an orphan, but she was not someone to be trifled with so easily.
She couldn’t outtalk or overpower them, but the organization would surely be able to teach them a lesson. She was a genuine red-seedling descendant of a martyr, who should she fear?
“What’s going on here, we’re all family, aren’t you ashamed? What are all of you standing around for? Not tired from the day’s work, eh, having the energy to gawk at this spectacle?” At this critical moment, the Gaijiatun brigade leader appeared, scolded the villagers away, and then glared sternly at Shen Yunfang and Shen Fuzhen.
Shen Yunfang wasn’t the least bit afraid; she was the victim, and they couldn’t pin anything on her.
After Shen Yeqing understood the whole story, he began to mediate between the two.
Sigh, it was a difficult situation for Shen Yeqing too; one was his niece, the other his sister, and to be honest, that money should belong to his family.
However, to maintain peace and solidarity, and not to lose face in public, he, the head of the family, had to step in.
He severely scolded Shen Fuzhen, telling her that what she had done was inhumane, and also criticized Shen Yunfang for not respecting her elder. Even if the elder was flawed, it wasn’t for a young child like her to be hopping madly about it.
Shen Yunfang realized from his words that although her eldest uncle scolded her second aunt and criticized her, he was actually more displeased with her than with her second aunt.
Yet, now that things had gotten to this point, there was no way she could back down. If she were to go back with her tail between her legs today, she’d simply be inviting others to walk all over her in the future.
After she clamored that if she didn’t get justice, she would sever ties, Shen Yeqing finally ordered Shen Fuzhen to hand over the yuan, insisting that whoever it belonged to should have it, and even as the second aunt, she could not embezzle it.
Shen Fuzhen, still wary of her elder brother, reluctantly but ungraciously pulled out the yuan.
Shen Yunfang was more decisive; with a quick movement, she snatched the yuan from Shen Fuzhen’s hand and then tossed it back onto her face.
“Consider this money as payment for the meals I had at your place in the past; you don’t need to give me any change back.” She wouldn’t care about this one yuan even if she died poor; her persistence was all about pride,
Shen Yunfang watched her second aunt bending down to pick up the money, snorted, and marched back home.
