Chapter 54 -52: If you dare to move, I’ll scratch you

It wasn’t until 7 p.m. that the two of them had dinner. After dinner, Shen Yunfang washed the dishes. After tidying up everything, the two sat in the same room. Shen Yunfang felt quite uncomfortable and felt compelled to find some topic of conversation.

“Oh right, about the box of jewelry we found, let’s split it between us; it would be unfair for me to keep it all to myself,” Shen Yunfang remembered this matter.

When Li Hongjun went alone to work in the backyard, she pondered over this. It seemed somewhat unkind of her to hoard everything to herself. The items were discovered by him, and all she did was look at them before stashing them away; the guilt was weighing on her. Thus, she thought that if it’s not inappropriate, she would give him a few pieces as a gesture.

While saying this, Shen Yunfang slipped off her shoes and sat cross-legged on the kang, carefully taking out the jewelry box from her bosom, and waved over to the man who was still sitting there stiffly.

Li Hongjun closed his eyes for a moment, thinking this woman was really something.

He got up and walked to the edge of the kang, removed his shoes like she did, and sat cross-legged opposite her.

His socks, revealing a big toe and already full of scars, were shamelessly exposed to Shen Yunfang.

Shen Yunfang looked up at the man sitting across from her and suddenly noticed that his face seemed to have turned red. Impossible, right?

Li Hongjun kept a straight face and deliberately pushed his foot forward a little, then brazenly said, “This is simplicity and hardship, understand?”

Shen Yunfang burst into laughter, “Understand, I understand.”

The laughter made Li Hongjun’s face grow even redder. His socks had been mended when he returned, but he’d walked so much today that they’d torn again. There was nothing he could do about it.

Shen Yunfang didn’t dare laugh too long in case the man across from her, with his fragile pride, might turn hostile. She quickly composed herself and seriously began to arrange the pieces of jewelry from the box onto the kang, one by one: there were six pieces in total, two bracelets—one fully green and another of slightly lesser quality—also a Maitreya Buddha pendant, a pair of droplet-shaped earrings, and two peace buckles.

She pushed the bracelet with the lesser quality toward Li Hongjun, naturally keeping the fully green one for herself. They would each have one of the peace buckles. Choosing between the pendant and the earrings was a bit tricky, however.

After hesitating for a while, she finally chose the pendant, mainly because it used more material than the earrings and was likely more valuable.

Li Hongjun watched with a smirk that wasn’t quite a smile as the young girl in front of him divided the spoils. Seeing her struggle over the distribution, he found her endearingly perplexing for some reason.

“These are mine, and these are yours. Keep them safe, I won’t be responsible if you lose them,” Shen Yunfang felt her heart bleed, but she managed to maintain an air of nonchalance.

In reality, her little expressions had all been caught precisely by the man opposite her, as if he were a scout.

Li Hongjun, with an unaffected face, pushed the few pieces of jade jewelry back in front of Shen Yunfang.

“What’s the matter? You don’t agree?” Shen Yunfang thought he was dissatisfied with the split.

“No, that’s not it. No need to split, they’re all yours,” Li Hongjun picked them up one by one, placing them back into Shen Yunfang’s jewelry box. “You’re my future wife; what’s mine is yours.”

Somehow, Shen Yunfang’s face turned scarlet at his words. Was she being flirted with, or was it also a threat? If she accepted now, did it mean she would have to marry him later? And if she didn’t accept… that was out of the question.

In the end, the jewelry all found its way back into Shen Yunfang’s box.

Shen Yunfang, looking at the man sitting cross-legged opposite her, began to feel uncomfortable all over again.

She deliberately looked at the sky, though the curtains were already drawn and she couldn’t see a thing, “It’s getting late, maybe you want to go have a look at the station?”

Li Hongjun looked at her and nodded, “Alright.” With that, he got down from the kang to put on his shoes, then picked up the military overcoat from the chair and put it on.

Shen Yunfang followed him onto the floor; she ought to at least see him out.

The two left the house one after the other, and outside, it had started to snow again. Flakes fell gently, landing on both of them.

Shen Yunfang glanced at the snowflakes on the man in front of her and bit her lip.

Li Hongjun opened the scrapyard’s gate and looking back at Shen Yunfang following him, he said, “Lock the door properly at night, don’t open it for anyone. I’m leaving now, and I’ll come back tomorrow morning.” After a deep glance at Shen Yunfang, he turned and trudged forward, with each step sinking into the snow.

Shen Yunfang watched Li Hongjun’s retreating figure, thinking about the heavy snow, the cold weather, and how there wouldn’t be many people at the bus station; certainly, the waiting room wouldn’t be much warmer than outside…

“Why don’t you just stay? Spend the night here to make do.” Eventually, Yunfang’s heart softened. After all, he came to see her, helped her out, and found such a valuable item for her. It didn’t seem right to let him freeze at the station overnight.

Yunfang comforted herself with that thought.

Almost immediately, and still moving forward, Hongjun turned his head back toward Yunfang, tugging slightly at the corner of his mouth in a semblance of a smile, “That works, I’ll just make do here for the night.”

Then, he strode back, pulled the stunned Yunfang into the yard, and with a clang shut the gate. He then led her all the way into the warm house.

It was then that Yunfang snapped back to reality, feeling as if she’d been duped. She looked at Hongjun suspiciously, but he had already resumed his serious demeanor.

Forget it, no use overthinking it now. The words had already slipped out. Judging by the person who was automatically taking off his coat, it was probably too late to change her mind.

Yunfang looked around; there was only one kang bed in the house, not too big—about one meter thirty, not enough to fit two adults. Looking at the ground, a dirt floor, she only had one set of bedding, and there was no way to lend him some to sleep on the floor.

“There’s really nowhere for you to sleep,” Yunfang fretted, regretting her impulsiveness.

Scanning the room, Hongjun said, “You sleep on the kang, and I’ll just make do on the table for the night.” He walked to the table against the wall, bent down to move the bowls and basins onto the floor, then draped his army coat over himself and swung his legs up to sit on the table.

The table immediately protested with creaks and groans, and when Hongjun lay down, it gave several long creaks under the strain.

Yunfang watched and worried for the table; one lie-down and it might just collapse in the middle of the night.

But there was nothing she could do now—if he said he could make do, then he could make do.

It was getting late; the two of them had little to say, and Yunfang suggested they should just get ready for bed.

After the lights were turned off, Yunfang lay down with her clothes on. Perhaps it was because she knew there was a man in the room, but she found herself unable to sleep.

Tossing and turning on the kang, the incessant creaks from the table were driving her crazy.

“Can’t you stay still? You’re making it impossible to sleep!” Yunfang shouted irritably.

The creaking instantly stopped from the other side.

Far from feeling relieved, Yunfang grew even more agitated.

Finally unable to bear it, she sat up suddenly, “Listen, you can come sleep on the kang if you want, but if you dare move a muscle, I’ll scratch you.”

In the darkness, Hongjun grinned with satisfaction, then swiftly climbed down from the table and lay flat on his back on the kang.

Yunfang scooted further inside the already small kang bed, but even with her moving in, there wasn’t much space left.

She thought for a moment, then pulled out the bedding from underneath her and draped one end over Hongjun.

Yunfang bunched up the army coat he’d been wearing and placed it firmly between them, then sternly warned, “I’m letting you on the kang, but if you dare cross this line, just see if I don’t scratch you.”

“Mhm,” Hongjun responded, but he thought to himself, if she’s the one who crosses the line, that’s not on me.

Yunfang thought she’d never fall asleep with a man so close, but to her surprise, it didn’t take long before she drifted off.

Hearing the breaths beside her grow long and steady, Hongjun carefully turned to face Yunfang, watching her in the dark. He didn’t know how long he looked at her before he sighed softly, poking her ruddy rural cheeks a few times, satisfying his desire for touch, and then he closed his eyes, lying on his side.
