Chapter 35: Chapter 35: The Five Thunders Order’s Abnormal Stirring

"AHHHH!"

A scream even more piercing than before rang out right next to Gu Zhao’s ear.

"That was so cool!"

Jiang Shishi rushed forward and threw her arms around Gu Zhao. He felt his arm sink deep into a soft expanse, giving him the illusion of being buried.

Beside them, Xiao Ya was also dumbstruck, her mouth slightly agape as she stared at Gu Zhao in disbelief.

They had heard Gu Zhao’s brief self-introduction before—that he had learned some Tao Scripture and Martial Arts from his grandfather as a child. They knew he worked out regularly and was surely fitter and a better fighter than the average young man, but that was the extent of it.

How could they have imagined Gu Zhao could display such speed and strength?

It was just like something out of an action movie!

The surrounding crowd also cried out in astonishment. Shouts of "Holy shit!" and "Badass!" were endless. Once they processed what had happened, they burst into cheers and applause for Gu Zhao.

No one suspected anything supernatural, however, because Gu Zhao hadn’t shown speed or strength that completely surpassed human limits. It was more like the level of a parkour expert.

To the onlookers, Gu Zhao’s quick reflexes and courage were what was truly precious.

"Xuanxuan!"

Only then did the child’s family scramble over. The mother swept the boy into her arms, trembling with emotion.

"WAAAH!" The boy seemed to finally realize what happened and burst into tears.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you..." The other adult, a middle-aged man, grabbed Gu Zhao’s hand and bowed repeatedly. Though he was trying to control himself, you could hear the tremor in his voice.

"It’s okay." Gu Zhao comforted the man in turn, patting his hand. "Just be more careful next time."

"We will, we will! I don’t think I’ll dare to take him hiking for the next few years," the man said with a wry smile, still shaken.

He was terrified by the close call. For a moment, it felt like his heart had stopped beating. If Gu Zhao hadn’t acted, he couldn’t bear to imagine the consequences.

The woman had finally recovered by now and pulled her son over to thank Gu Zhao. She had wanted to invite him to join them, but seeing the two beautiful girls with him, she tactfully held her tongue.

But a life-saving debt couldn’t be repaid with just a few words of thanks. The man insisted on adding Gu Zhao as a friend on social media. "Little brother, you might not mind, but if we don’t thank you properly, we won’t be able to live with ourselves!"

Someone in the crowd chimed in, "Send a silk banner to the young man’s workplace."

"Yes, yes, that’s right!" The man nodded eagerly.

Gu Zhao shook his head and refused. "I haven’t graduated yet."

The woman’s eyes lit up. "Even better! We’ll send it to your school!"

"No, no, really, don’t. It was nothing." Gu Zhao, with his new ’cheat ability’, didn’t want to attract attention. "Why don’t you just treat me to a meal instead?"

"Of course, we have to!" The woman’s eyes darted over, and she pulled the two girls closer. "You two ladies should come along as well. Let’s all add each other so we can stay in touch."

...

After thanking Gu Zhao again with their son in tow, the parents saw that the boy was still frightened. Although he’d calmed down a little, they decided against continuing up the mountain and turned back.

The crowd of onlookers gradually dispersed, but Jiang Shishi was still buzzing with excitement. "That was just too amazing!"

"Basic stuff, no need to get hyped," Gu Zhao said cheekily, then added, "It was mainly because the distance wasn’t far, and it wasn’t that dangerous."

Xiao Ya looked at the slope next to the stone steps. While it was true that grass and plants grew near the steps, it became very steep further down. After a certain point, the bottom was no longer visible. She really couldn’t see how it "wasn’t that dangerous." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

"I know this might not be the right thing to say right now, but please don’t be so reckless in the future. That was far too dangerous," Xiao Ya advised, her voice full of concern.

Gu Zhao appreciated her concern and nodded sincerely. "Thanks. I’ll be careful."

’Although I haven’t tested my Martial Arts on anyone yet, when it comes to just my Lightweight Skill, even the world’s number one parkour master would have to admit defeat. As long as I’m not falling directly from a skyscraper or a cliff, my life probably won’t be in danger.’

"You should be careful, but showing off is also essential!" Jiang Shishi, still clinging to Gu Zhao’s left arm, stared at him. "I bet you don’t usually get a chance to be in the spotlight. How did it feel?"

Feeling the soft sensation, Gu Zhao put on a serious expression. "It felt amazing!"

Xiao Ya discreetly pulled Jiang Shishi away. "Alright, alright, let’s keep climbing. We’re still far from the Supreme Lord Pavilion, and we need to get down the mountain early for that big meal."

Jiang Shishi let go and straightened her clothes. "Okay, okay, let’s keep climbing."

...

They had already left the Ancient Celestial Master Cave by now. After walking for a while, they took a detour to visit the Ancestor Hall.

"Quanzhen Performance Sect." Jiang Shishi read the large characters on the plaque. "Another Quanzhen Dao place. Isn’t this like a pincer attack on the Zhengyi Dao?"

Gu Zhao shook his head. "All Taoist Sects in the world are one family. Both the Quanzhen Dao and the Zhengyi Dao are orthodox branches of the Taoist Sect, and together they support our native culture."

Jiang Shishi turned back, completely bewildered. Just then, a middle-aged Daoist walked past the three of them. He first nodded at Jiang Shishi, then clasped his hands in a salute to Gu Zhao and said with a smile, "Blessed Infinite Celestial Venerable!"

Gu Zhao returned the salute with a smile.

Jiang Shishi was speechless.

After the Daoist had left, Jiang Shishi lightly punched Gu Zhao. "Did you do that on purpose?"

Gu Zhao held up his hands. "You’re the one who said it. I didn’t teach you that."

Jiang Shishi was exasperated. "Wasn’t it you who kept saying that the Zhengyi Dao and Quanzhen Dao were always either debating scriptures or fighting?"

Gu Zhao feigned ignorance. "Did I say that?"

Jiang Shishi clenched her little fists, only to hear Xiao Ya add softly from the side, "I don’t think he did."

"Ahhh! Xiaoya, you’ve been corrupted too!"

A trail of joyous laughter echoed along the mountain path, which soon turned into a chorus of panting.

After that little episode, the three had clearly grown closer and could now be considered friends.

"We’re finally here. I didn’t expect Qingcheng Mountain to be this hard to climb." Jiang Shishi caught her breath, looking at the Supreme Lord Pavilion in the distance.

"It’s not so bad. It’s much easier than East Mountain." Xiao Ya was also tired, but clearly not as exhausted as Jiang Shishi.

Jiang Shishi glanced at Xiao Ya’s legs, then down at her own chest. ’She has an advantage, and I have a burden. The difference between us is two hundred percent. How can I even compare?’

Gu Zhao rested with the two women outside for a moment before they joined the others in burning incense, lighting candles to pray for blessings, and paying respects outside the Supreme Lord Pavilion. Then, they entered the building together to kowtow to The Three Pristine Ones.

Entering the pavilion, they were greeted by a statue of Oldzi. A group of people who had reached the summit were lining up to kowtow. An old Daoist with white hair and a wrinkled face sat behind a table to the side of the Divine Statue. His head was bowed, his expression blank, one hand holding a small mallet, his eyes fixed on a bronze chime bowl on the table.

With each group of worshippers that knelt and kowtowed, the old Daoist would strike the chime bowl once.

"DONG—"

The three of them queued up behind the others. Jiang Shishi seemed to remember something and observed the old Daoist closely for a while, finally noticing something amiss.

"He’s wearing a Bluetooth headset!" Jiang Shishi whispered.

Xiao Ya also looked up, her gaze sweeping across the table. She whispered back, "And behind that little sign on the table, there’s a propped-up cell phone."

"You remember that news story too?" Jiang Shishi looked back at Xiao Ya, and the two girls giggled.

Only Gu Zhao suddenly felt the Five Thunders Order in his mind give a jolt. The adjacent Thunder Seed, whose purpose he had never known, suddenly became active, faintly pointing in a certain direction.

Gu Zhao’s heart skipped a beat. He snapped his head up, only to find that the old Daoist striking the chime bowl was also suddenly looking right at him.
