Who Let Him Cultivate?! (WX)-Chapter 661: High Efficiency
“I was too exhausted last night and didn’t get the chance to ask, but Miss Kongque, why did that killer target you?” Meng Jingzhou asked, his voice filled with a valiant and righteous spirit.
Kongque pondered for a moment. These three had saved my last night; they’re trustworthy, so it should be fine to tell them. “This isn’t a convenient place to talk. Shall we return to my room first?”
The group of three men and two women proceeded to Kongque’s room.
She poured tea for the four guests and set down the teapot, unhurriedly beginning her tale. “This all started after my shifu left the Daoist temple. The temple my shifu presided over was called the Mountain River Temple. Only he and I lived there.
“In his youth, my shifu attracted many romantic debts and often had lovers knocking on his door. As time passed, Shifu saw that my cultivation had progressed enough for self-preservation and used traveling the world as a pretext to leave the temple and evade his creditors.
“After learning of my shifu’s departure, the visits from those lovers decreased significantly. The temple became cold and desolate, left with me alone.
“One day, while I was meditating in my room, I heard a loud noise from the courtyard. I rushed out to find a blood-soaked man who had crashed into the courtyard. The man was handsome, but grievously wounded; even his collar was drenched in blood.
“I couldn’t bother to think that much. I carried the man inside, cut away his clothing, and tended to his injuries. The man remained unconscious for roughly a week. I don’t know what cultivation technique he practiced, but his wounds gradually healed.”
“When the man finally woke up, he was reticent, not even uttering a word of thanks, and he outstayed his welcome at the temple. Since I couldn’t just throw him out, I had no choice but to let him remain in the temple.
“Another month passed, and the man’s injuries had fully recovered. Suddenly, he grabbed my wrist and said he had fallen for me, hoping I could leave with him.
“But I didn’t even know his name or background. His attitude was overbearing, and my wrist hurt from his grip. After I broke free, I refused him outright.
“The corners of his mouth twisted into a cold smile. He said no one had ever dared to refuse his orders before and that I was the first. He stated that anyone he desired must either become his or become dead. If I didn’t go with him, he would send an endless stream of assassins after me. Then, he left.
“I wasn’t sure whether he was bluffing, but I kept feeling like his words carried a wicked aura that terrified me. I packed my belongings that very night, thinking that if I came to a bustling city like this, the assassins he sent wouldn’t dare to look for me.
“That’s how I came to Chunjiang[1] City, where I also encountered my younger sister and you three young heroes.”
“So arrogant?” Meng Jingzhou raised an eyebrow. Even I, an almighty Holy Son of the Heavenly Court Creed, and the hoodlum Young Creed Leader beside me wouldn’t act like that.
“Miss Kongque, rest assured. With us here, no assassin can harm you!”
“Amitabha, so that’s how it is. It seems last night’s assassin was just the first. More assassins will likely come for Benefactress Kongque in the future.”
Shi Chan retrieved a string of sandalwood prayer beads from his sleeve and gifted it to Kongque. “These beads have been imbued with this poor monk’s vow power. It can withstand attacks at the Nascent Soul Stage for a quarter of an hour, and I will also sense when they are activated. Please accept them for your protection, Benefactress Kongque.”
“Na-nascent Soul Stage?” Kongque was flabbergasted. How many spirit stones must this be worth? I can’t afford something this precious even if I sell myself. “I-I can’t afford this.”
Shi Chan smiled, pressing them into her hand. “Buddha said, ‘Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda.’ I will receive my reward in due time. You need not offer anything, Benefactoress. This poor monk simply hopes you will refrain from committing evil deeds and perform more good deeds in the future. That will be considered repayment.”
“Many thanks then, Master.” Kongque treated the prayer beads as a priceless treasure, wrapping them in a handkerchief before carefully tucking them into the front of her robe. “This is the second time I’ve received the grace of Buddhism.” Kongque smiled brightly.
“Second time?”
“The first time was a story our mother told us. It happened before we sisters were born. I was separated from my family when I was very young, so my memories are vague.
“Younger Sister, you probably remember it more clearly than I do, right?”
Fuling gave a soft affirmative. “Initially, Father and Mother struggled to conceive a child. They happened to hear that the Ancient Forest Temple housed a senior monk proficient in praying for children, so Mother went there to seek out that monk, named Master Yuxin.
“After returning, Mother indeed became pregnant.
“Mother told us that our births were a grace from Buddhism and a blessing from Buddha. She said we must perform good deeds and accumulate virtue to repay the grace of Buddha.
“After Elder Sister went missing, Mother also went to the Ancient Forest Temple to find Master Yuxin. Unfortunately, Master Yuxin had already passed away in a seated posture.”
Lu Yang’s expression turned peculiar. Master Yuxin’s method for granting fertility worked so quickly? Was it a proper method?
He turned to Shi Chan. “Have you heard of the Ancient Forest Temple or Master Yuxin?”
Shi Chan shook his head lightly. “There are countless temples in the world; this poor monk can’t know them all. As for Master Yuxin, I have not heard of him either. Perhaps he was an accomplished monk who concealed himself within the mundane realm.”
Knock, knock, knock.
Sounds of knocking came from Kongque’s door.
“Is Miss Kongque in?”
Kongque immediately grew wary, fixing her gaze intently on the door as a strong sense of danger swirled in her heart.
“Who is it?”
“From the yamen.”
Kongque was bewildered and grew even more vigilant. Why are people from the yamen looking for me? I’d told them everything I could when I reported the case last night.
Lu Yang knitted his brows. He used his spiritual consciousness and observed that the people outside were indeed constables—or at least, dressed in constable uniforms. Furthermore, their cultivation levels weren’t low, at the Golden Core Stage. They also carried a faint scent of blood, likely having just killed someone.
Lu Yang gave Kongque a meaningful look, signaling that it was safe for her to open the door with the three of them present.
Mustering her courage, Kongque opened the door to reveal three unfamiliar constables.
The constables were also taken aback to see three men and two women in Kongque’s room. Why are there so many people?
“Which one of you two ladies is Miss Kongque?” the lead constable asked, unable to distinguish between Fuling and Kongque. It would be embarrassing to mistake one for the other.
“I am. May I ask the reason for your visit?” Kongque replied calmly.
“This involves your privacy, Miss Kongque. Please step outside for a moment.”
Kongque grew even warier and shook her head firmly. “Everyone here is trustworthy. You may speak here.”
The lead constable hesitated for a bit, but chose to respect Kongque’s decision.
“It’s like this. Miss Kongque, based on the reason you provided for being targeted by the assassin last night and the employer named by the assassin himself, we reported the situation to our superiors immediately. We’ve already used these clues to identify the man who wants you dead. The provincial governor deemed him a major scourge and instructed us to take action immediately.
“Just moments ago, in a coordinated operation across multiple cities, we raided this man’s stronghold and arrested him. A total of three Divine Transfiguration cultivators, fifteen Nascent Soul cultivators, and several Golden Core cultivators participated in this operation, and I’m one of them.
“We wanted to confirm with you, Miss Kongque. Is this the man?” The constable pulled a sheet of paper from his robe. The man depicted on it was handsome, with a trace of wickedness in his features.
Kongque, “...”
You authorities are quite efficient, huh?
1. “Chunjiang” translates to “spring river.” ☜
