Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 20: Even the Opposing Lawyer Got Taken Away?
The judge tapped the gavel lightly and looked toward Elara Hale. "Does the defendant have anything to add?"
Elara Hale felt a tightness in her chest. The current situation was extremely unfavorable for her side. No matter what, Brandon White couldn’t overturn this final piece of video evidence.
Moreover, the evidence brought forth by Mason Jacobs’ side earlier was only contested by Brandon White as being illegally obtained. There was no other argument, and it wasn’t certain whether the judge would recognize the illegal procurement.
She clenched her hand slightly.
At the plaintiff’s bench, Kylie Dalton watched Elara Hale smugly. It seemed inevitable that they would win the case. She was in high spirits and even thought about how to make things difficult and humiliate Elara Hale later.
Brandon White stood up at that moment. "Your Honor, I also have evidence to submit. Please have the bailiff bring it up."
The judge signaled for the bailiff to present the evidence.
The video and documents were presented in court. As the first video was played, Mason Jacobs’ face suddenly turned grim.
"Director Kerr, I’m troubling you with this matter. Here’s fifty thousand as a deposit, and the remaining fifty thousand will be delivered after we win the case."
The middle-aged man in a Mao suit accepted the bank card, locked it in a drawer, and curiously asked, "I say, Special Assistant Wood, you’re seeking only seventy thousand in damages with this lawsuit, yet you’re giving me a hundred thousand. Isn’t this a losing deal?"
The person called Special Assistant Wood chuckled, "Someone has angered our President Jacobs. He just wants to teach them a lesson. We are confident we can win this case on our own. We’re just looking for some extra assurance."
"I see," Director Kerr said sympathetically. "To provoke President Jacobs, that person is doomed."
The video cut off here.
Mason Jacobs clenched his fists, his face turning ashen. How did this video end up in the hands of that lawyer White?
Giving money to Director Kerr under the pretense of case matters was a front; the main purpose was to record this video. Over the years, he and Director Kerr had cooperated well, but recently, he found that Director Kerr was trying to extract himself, having refused Mason’s requests several times.
He recorded this video to gather leverage against Director Kerr, so Special Assistant Wood was instructed to use the case as a reason to send money to Director Kerr while recording this video.
Throughout the process, only he and Special Assistant Wood had access to the video. How could it have been obtained by someone else?
Mason Jacobs looked coldly at his assistant standing beside him. Special Assistant Wood’s face was pale as well; he had no idea what was going on.
Mason Jacobs’ expression worsened. To have such a video released in court was not good. One wrong move, and he could be sent to prison!
He turned to Chester Lowell and asked, "Can it be resolved?"
Chester Lowell hesitated for a moment. "I’ll do my best."
This involved bribery, which was a significant risk.
Mason Jacobs’ expression was ruthless as he lowered his voice, "First solve the problem at hand. If you can seize the opportunity to take them down as well, even better. Once this matter is settled, I’ll give you an apartment in Kyros."
Chester Lowell’s eyes lit up, and he nodded subtly. "President Jacobs, I’ll do my best."
Mason Jacobs nodded in satisfaction. This video involving Director Kerr would make the judge think twice. Plus, with Chester Lowell’s maneuvering, getting out of this situation might not be too difficult.
Just then, the court began to play the second video.
On the big screen appeared footage of several lead lawyers from Jacobs Group and senior officials from Kyros Court at a bathhouse.
"We’re grateful for your assistance in these cases..."
"Not at all, President Jacobs has been generous..."
"There will be more opportunities for cooperation in the future..."
"Please accept this eighty thousand with a smile..."
Mason Jacobs stood rigidly, glaring at the screen. He suddenly stood up and shouted, "These were all synthesized by other means. I question the authenticity of the footage!"
His lawyer, Chester Lowell, also stood up at the right moment and calmly said, "Your Honor, these video images are unclear and heavily suspect of being synthesized. We request an adjournment until the results of a technical assessment are available. I believe the law will not let a bad person go unpunished, but it will not wrong a good person either!"
Both Chester Lowell and Mason Jacobs understood that this piece of evidence must not continue to be shown. Already two video pieces have been exposed; who knows what else could follow!
Calling for an adjournment now was the best option.
What had seemed to be a sure win suddenly took a turn when Brandon White burst out smiling, confidently pointing at the big screen. "Why wait for an assessment result? That’s too slow! I’ve already got it ready for you."
The technical assessment report of the video boldly appeared on the big screen!
At the bottom, it was signed off by: Technology Department of The People’s Court of Kyros.
Mason Jacobs’ face went rigid, and Chester Lowell’s lips turned white.
This... was essentially sealing the coffin on their bribery charge!
Kylie Dalton still didn’t grasp the seriousness, pushing Mason Jacobs. "Where’s our evidence? Submit it quickly, or we’re going to lose the case! I refuse to let that wench Elara trample over me!"
Mason Jacobs, already irked, snapped, "What do you know!"
Now, he wished for Elara Hale to win the case, so the court wouldn’t focus on his massive bribery. But... was this possible?
The next moment, four bailiffs orderly approached and stood in front of the plaintiff’s bench, sternly saying, "Mason Jacobs, Chester Lowell, please come with us to assist in an investigation."
Kylie Dalton quickly stood up to block them, loudly questioning, "What are you doing? What’s wrong with my son? On what grounds are you arresting him? If anyone should be arrested, it’s Elara Hale!"
"Please step aside! Obstructing a police investigation could result in detention. Do you also want to spend a few days in lock-up?"
Kylie Dalton shrank back, frightened.
Mason Jacobs and Chester Lowell were led away, dejected.
Elara Hale watched in shock. The turn of events was too drastic. A case that seemed doomed to fail had actually ended with the opposing lawyer being taken away?
She looked at Brandon White, then at Zion Fitzwilliam. "... Was this something you both planned in advance?"
Brandon White quickly shook his head. "How could it be! We’re just small fry; we don’t have such capabilities. It’s just President Jacobs’ bad luck that someone exposed these videos, and I happened to use them."
Of course, there was something he didn’t mention.
The "someone" who exposed the videos was Mr. Fitzwilliam beside her.
As for how the videos were obtained, that indeed took considerable effort.
But there was no need to tell his sister-in-law about this.
Elara Hale thought it made sense. If Brandon White were that formidable, would he need to practice on her minor case?
It seemed they just got unbelievably lucky.
With the plaintiff and lawyer taken away, the case couldn’t proceed, and the judge announced an adjournment, with the next hearing to be notified separately.
Elara Hale still couldn’t feel it was real, like a dream, as she followed Zion Fitzwilliam out.
Taking just two steps, she heard an angry voice, "Elara Hale! Stop right there!"
Kylie Dalton approached her aggressively, raising a hand to slap her. "Is this your doing, you bitch? Are you trying to ruin my son?"
Yet the slap didn’t land, as Zion Fitzwilliam caught her hand. He seemed slightly impatient, "How dare you still hop over here?"
Kylie Dalton glared at him, viciously cursing, "Let me go! You adulterous pair daring to set up my son—I’ll make you pay!"
Zion Fitzwilliam looked at her like watching a clown, casually dropping, "Do as you please."
He tossed her aside and walked straight past.
Not far away, Rosalind Jacobs observed this scene, hatred burning in her eyes. "That slut, Elara Hale! Hurting my brother and allowing that wild man to harm my mother!"
Cecilia Quincy had a glint in her eyes and said softly, "Mason might be in some trouble this time. The evidence Elara presented is deadly. One day can be like a hundred days of grace between a couple, but Elara went a little too far this time."
Rosalind’s eyes seemed to be poisoned, turning more vicious.
