Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 174: Flirting Like a Pro
Mason Jacobs’ face was a bloody blur, his gaze fierce and vicious. He raised his hand to wipe the blood off his face, trying to prop himself up, but the injury was too severe, and he slumped back halfway.
Special Assistant Wood hurriedly supported him, "President Jacobs, I’ve called the doctor. They’ll be here soon. Please hold on."
Mason Jacobs leaned against the wall with assistance, coldly watching the direction Elara and the others were leaving before retracting his gaze.
He had thought too simply. He never imagined Elara would fall for that Fitzwilliam kid, all for a mere downtown apartment and six million in cash, they bought her!
Since he had tried to resolve this matter amicably and they both failed to appreciate it, they couldn’t blame him for taking drastic measures.
In Mason Jacobs’ lowered eyes, a vicious gleam flashed.
On the other side, after Zion Fitzwilliam dragged Elara Hale out of the hospital, he stopped, turned to look at Esther Carter, and nodded slightly, "Thanks to you for protecting Elara today, I owe you one."
Esther Carter frowned, "Elara is my best friend; it’s only right that I protect her."
Though he is a big shot, and she did covet the benefits from the big shot, she wouldn’t trade everything for his perks.
Even if it didn’t benefit her, and even if it cost her dearly, she would still risk everything for Elara.
Zion Fitzwilliam smiled at Esther Carter’s words, "I understand, but I will remember it."
Esther Carter felt secretly pleased: The great Mr. Fitzwilliam’s means he’ll throw more resources her way! Ah, she’s going to be a complete sensation!
Elara’s husband is really charming, absolutely wonderful, simply out of this world!
In front of Elara, Esther Carter stayed reserved and nodded, "You’re welcome."
The implication: I’ve received your thanks, understood your words, now bring on the resources!
Zion Fitzwilliam nodded, and their eyes exchanged meaning in the air, fully understanding each other’s intentions.
Elara Hale was suspicious, "What kind of secret language are you two speaking?"
"Well, um," Esther Carter looped her arm around her neck, whispering mysteriously, "you’ll find out later..."
At that moment, a voice boomed from not far away, "Esther! Carter!"
Esther Carter looked up in surprise to see Owen Grayson leaning on his knees, panting heavily nearby.
Her expression became quite interesting.
Owen pressed his waist and hobbled towards her, "You... huff... do you have any shame? I’ve called you so many times... huff... why didn’t you pick up? If it weren’t for the fact that... huff... I saw you from the opposite building, huff... you’d still be ghosting me, huh? Huff... You dare to sleep with me, huff... dare to take responsibility! Sleep and leave as if nothing happened, huff... am I some kind of joke to you?"
Esther Carter was taken aback and instinctively went to cover his mouth, but with Owen’s slippery skills, by the time she managed to cover his mouth, he had already blurted everything out.
Her scalp tingled as she cautiously looked at Elara Hale.
Elara was struck by such a dramatic revelation and couldn’t process it quickly, looking at Esther Carter speechlessly.
Even Zion Fitzwilliam raised an eyebrow with interest.
Esther Carter closed her eyes, pushing Elara and Zion in the opposite direction, "You two go back first, Elara, I’ll explain it to you later, go quick, go, go, go!"
Elara struggled, "No, I want to stay with you! Who knows if that guy is good or bad? What if you get bullied? I can’t rest easy, let me stay with you!"
She wanted to watch the drama unfold!
Zion Fitzwilliam chimed in, "You two women might not be his match if a fight breaks out. It might be good for me to be a deterrent."
Esther Carter desperately pushed them away, "No need! You hear me? I don’t need it, I can handle him, I could tear him apart if I have to!"
She was so embarrassed...
If it was just Elara, it would be one thing, but in front of the great Mr. Fitzwilliam, she couldn’t bear it. Moreover, she felt some of the things she’d done would make her too ashamed to face Elara, afraid Elara might lash out at her.
Pushing them away was the best option.
Elara didn’t want to make her friend uncomfortable; she was just teasing her. Being pushed along by Esther Carter, she went along with it.
But before she left, she grabbed Esther Carter, "Call me when it’s over, you hear?!"
Esther Carter nodded repeatedly, finally shoving them into the car, exhaled a sigh of relief, and turned to find Owen Grayson.
Owen Grayson stood where he was, nervously watching her. When she approached, he sneered, "I thought you’d run away again, why didn’t you? I was ready to chase you."
Esther Carter looked at him like he was an idiot, "Why would I run? I’m not guilty like some people!"
Owen snorted, "Who’s the one who denies everything after pulling up their pants?"
Esther Carter laughed out of frustration, giving him a shove on the shoulder, "I say, brother, can’t you handle it? If you’re not guilty, why make a scene in front of my friend? You just want to expose everything in front of them to make me give you an explanation, right? I haven’t even confronted you, yet you act like I’m the one at fault!"
Owen’s face showed a hint of discomfort, evidently hit by Esther Carter’s accusation, and he bluffed, "If you weren’t so irresponsible, would I be like this? How many days has it been? Have you reached out to me? That night, when you held me, you weren’t this cold and heartless..."
Before he could finish, Esther Carter kicked him, glaring at him warningly, "Are you crazy? You want me to take responsibility? If I really did, would you dare? Aren’t you already engaged? Scumbag!"
She only found out a few days ago that Owen was engaged, and his fiancée was that bitch Rosalind!
Initially, she thought they could just part ways afterward, but after learning this, all she wanted was to end him.
Engaged yet still having a one-night stand with her, and foolish enough to choose someone like Rosalind, showed he had terrible taste and character. She was done wasting her time.
Speaking of which, Owen was evidently guilty, "I was forced by my family, I haven’t touched her. If I knew this would happen between us, I wouldn’t have gotten engaged..."
"But you’re already engaged," Esther Carter looked at him sideways, "And let me tell you the truth, that bitch Rosalind is sickening, I can’t stand her. It’s either her or me, what do you say?"
Owen immediately swore, "I’ll go back and call off the engagement. It has to be called off; given everything between us, we have to be together. We both had our first time; marriage is the only option."
Esther Carter scoffed carelessly, "So what about the first time? There’s always a second time. It’s just a piece of skin; who cares about that these days? My first might have been with you, but who comes second or third is none of your business!"
Owen looked at her, displeased, "Well, I don’t care. You asked me how I plan to take responsibility, and this is my plan. I’ll go back and call off the engagement, then we’ll be together. Do you agree or not?"
Esther chuckled, "You deal with the engagement first, and then we’ll talk. You’re asking for a promise when nothing’s settled. You think you can trick me into this? Show some sincerity if you want me to play along!"
Owen looked serious, "Okay, I’ll go home for a bit. It might take a few days. My home is in Seacliff, there’s two days for the round trip, plus some time to deal with my family... I’ll be back by the end of next week at the latest. Wait for me."
Esther just idly drew circles on the ground with her toes, not saying a word.
Owen got anxious, "Look, don’t find yourself a pretty boy while I’m gone. I know I wasn’t great that day, but... it’s always like that the first time. I’m actually quite good. Why don’t you give me another chance before I leave?"
"Try your damn luck!" Esther snapped, hitting him over the head with her bag before turning to walk away.
Owen quickly caught up with her, anxiously pleading, "Promise me. Don’t rush into a second or third time with someone else. Wait for me to come back, see how I do. Just give me a week, okay?"
Esther remained silent, walking straight ahead, while Owen chased after her, "Hurry up and agree! You’re making me so nervous, you know?"
The camera pans out, and the sky is completely dark. Under the dim streetlights, the woman’s figure is slender and purposeful, with the man jumping around her, desperately begging for a promise.
Their figures gradually fade into the distance. At some point, the man fell silent too, and they walked shoulder to shoulder, as if they had spent a lifetime together.
In relationships, it’s easy to be captivated, but only a few truly reach a lifelong commitment.
Elsewhere, Elara and Zion returned home, only to find that the pair of rabbits Lina had given her had disappeared.
They used to be placed on the sofa in the living room.
"Where are the rabbits?" she asked Zion.
Zion looked calm, "New plush toys can sometimes have issues like excessive formaldehyde. To avoid any risks, I took them to be dry cleaned. They’ll be back tomorrow."
Elara didn’t think much of it, smiling, "You really are attentive."
After dinner, Elara took the initiative to wash dishes, while Zion helped Joanne with her homework.
Joanne had strong self-discipline and good study habits. She finished her homework in less than an hour.
As Zion was about to leave, Joanne suddenly called out to him, "Uncle Fitzwilliam..."
Zion turned around, "What’s up?"
Joanne hesitated, finally asking, "Someone came to the school today to cancel Jasmine’s enrollment. They said Jasmine died... Is it true?"
Zion was silent for a moment, then nodded, "It’s true."
Joanne was stunned, a flicker of pain in her eyes, and she softly asked, "How did she die?"
Zion sighed and sat her down again, explaining seriously, "She wanted to live a high life, but others were using her. High returns often come with high risks, but she didn’t understand this. Society isn’t just black or white; there are many dark sides, so we must be careful."
Joanne nodded silently, then whispered, "Thanks for telling me, Uncle Fitzwilliam, I understand now."
Zion smiled appreciatively, patting her head, "Get some rest. Those things are in the past. Live your life well."
"Okay." Joanne smiled as well.
As Zion left the room, he saw Elara standing at the door with a glass of milk, lost in thought, having clearly overheard the conversation.
Zion paused, knowing she still felt guilty about Jasmine, and gestured towards the sofa, "Come and sit."
Elara sat on the sofa, sipping the milk and forcing a smile, "What’s up?"
Zion sat across from her, legs apart, elbows resting on his thighs, leaning slightly forward, looking at her intently, "Are you still sad?"
Elara shook her head honestly, "Initially, I was very sad, but I’m okay now. Mostly, it just feels so sudden. She was so young, I feel a bit sorry for her."
Zion didn’t criticize her for being soft-hearted, he just nodded and said, "The departure of life indeed evokes a sense of kinship, it’s in our genes. It’s normal for you to feel this way."
Elara realized, "Zion, were you trying to comfort me?"
Zion paused slightly, then smiled at her, "You caught me."
Elara chuckled, "I don’t need comforting, I’m really fine."
A bit down, but it doesn’t affect her life. After all, Jasmine had little to do with her.
Zion nodded, gazing at her deeply, "I know you’re okay, but sometimes when you’re feeling down, just talking with someone can make it a lot better."
Elara was taken aback, warmth flooding her heart. He really was considerate, able to see through her.
Her sadness might be gone after a good sleep, and in a few days, these things might not even be remembered. She was used to letting time heal her mood, never expecting someone would value her present sadness more than the eventual relief time would bring.
She lowered her head, looking at the milk in the glass, and softly recounted the story of meeting Jasmine and supporting her.
Because of the emotional investment in the past, she couldn’t see Jasmine in simple black and white terms. She never mentioned it to anyone, even forcing herself to forget after Jasmine betrayed her.
Speaking softly, Zion listened attentively.
When she finished, Elara found herself much calmer.
She smiled wryly, "Thanks for listening to me."
She hadn’t realized that she just needed to let it all out. She felt much better without needing any comfort.
Zion smiled, "No need to thank me, chatting with my wife is perfectly normal, isn’t it?"
The word "wife" gave Elara pause, but she quickly recovered, smiling, "I’ll go freshen up then."
"Alright."
As Elara entered the bathroom, Zion’s phone rang. Answering it, he heard Miles’ voice, "President Fitzwilliam, both rabbits have been completely dismantled. We found a total of seven micro-cameras in their eyes, tails, and teeth, and six micro-recorders."
