Chapter 134: Chapter 134: A Young Man’s Dream Is Not a Delusion

In an unfinished residential complex somewhere in Northgarde, inside a room in one of the buildings.

Mason Jacobs stood smoking at the empty doorway.

This complex was developed by a small developer. In the past two years, the real estate market was sluggish, and the funding chain broke before construction was completed. As payment for debts, it was transferred to Jacobs Group.

Mason Jacobs brought a team today to assess the value of this asset.

Autumn had arrived, and the chilly wind blew in through the holes where windows were not yet installed, making the tips of his cigarette glow crimson intermittently.

Special Assistant Wood answered a call and walked over, his expression hesitant, "President Jacobs, there’s still no news of the missus."

Mason Jacobs showed no expression on his face, took out another cigarette and lit it, after a few puffs he spoke, "She won’t get out of Northgarde, keep searching, focus on those influential families."

It’s been almost two weeks since Cecilia Quincy ran off. Over these two weeks, he sent people to search again and again but still couldn’t find her.

He didn’t believe Cecilia Quincy could be capable enough to escape his tight-knit network; she must still be in Northgarde, he just hadn’t found her yet.

To hide someone for so long right under his nose, the other party must have some capability. His prime suspect was The Warner Family, but given their involvement in military and politics, he couldn’t easily offend them.

However, it’s only a matter of time to catch Cecilia Quincy.

Special Assistant Wood nodded, "Understood."

But he didn’t leave, still stood there, hesitant to speak.

Mason Jacobs turned and looked at him, "Anything else?"

Special Assistant Wood hesitated for a moment before speaking, "Just got news, Elara Hale encountered an accident."

Mason Jacobs uttered an "oh?" and turned around, back towards him to continue smoking, slowly exhaling a puff, before asking deliberately, "What kind of accident?"

Special Assistant Wood guessed secretly if perhaps President Jacobs no longer cared about news about Elara Hale, that maybe he’d meddled unnecessarily today and wondered if President Jacobs would be displeased with him.

But since the words were spoken, he could only report honestly, "She was hit head-on by a dump truck while waiting for the bus."

Mason Jacobs’ hand froze while holding the cigarette, turned to frown and ask, "Injured? How serious is it?"

Special Assistant Wood shook his head, "Only know she was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment, the hospital has strong confidentiality, don’t know if the higher-ups have sealed off the information, can’t find out the situation inside."

Mason Jacobs’ expression changed, his voice turning solemn, "Which hospital?"

"Serene Health International Medical Center." Special Assistant Wood hesitated for three seconds and continued, "The accident happened about an hour and a half ago."

Mason Jacobs tossed out the phrase, "Investigate that runaway dump truck," then turned and left.

He left so quickly that Special Assistant Wood hadn’t reacted yet, seeing the half-smoked cigarette tossed on the ground, Special Assistant Wood sighed lightly.

He guessed wrong, President Jacobs was still concerned about Elara Hale, luckily he shouldn’t face President Jacobs’ anger.

But immediately he frowned again, President Jacobs and Elara Hale already divorced, now the missus at home is Cecilia Quincy, if President Jacobs still likes Elara Hale, will he bring her back?

Thinking of those complicated scenarios, he shook his head, forget it, these weren’t matters for a mere assistant to worry about.

Better go handle the tasks assigned by President Jacobs first.

On the other side, Mason Jacobs drove to Serene Health International Medical Center.

Along the way, his hands trembled, not knowing exactly how he felt; he was actually quite calm inside, rarely had anything from childhood to adulthood stirred him greatly, but it seemed that ever since the divorce, many things related to Elara Hale could make him lose control.

When he got off the car, standing at the medical center entrance, surprisingly he felt a bit flustered.

When the accident happened, she was waiting for the bus, surely unprepared, the dump truck was so big, crashing straight into her... would she still have any chance?

Mason Jacobs’ breathing tightened a bit, glanced at the medical center’s entrance, then strode in briskly.

He inquired at the guidance desk about the location of the car accident victims brought in today, then followed clues to find Elara Hale’s ward.

Elara Hale had already woken up, was talking with Aidan Sommers, and Yvette Sommers was standing quietly nearby, peeling an apple for Elara.

David Hales had been discharged from the hospital over the past couple of days; Yvette Sommers had originally been at home taking care of him. Upon hearing news of Elara Hale’s accident, she hesitated for a moment but eventually followed Aidan’s suggestion to come visit Elara.

The two had just arrived not long ago, barely begun to speak, when Mason Jacobs pushed the door open. Yvette Sommers noticed him first, after initial shock came delight, "Mason, you came? Ah you see, this is really..."

Aidan Sommers hesitated upon seeing Mason Jacobs, glanced at Elara Hale to see her face showing caution, then instinctively stepped forward, shielding Elara.

Mason Jacobs didn’t mind him, seeing Elara Hale lying safe and sound on the hospital bed, he already relaxed, at this moment he exchanged pleasantries with Yvette Sommers, "Auntie Yvette, you’re here too?"

He always followed Elara Hale in calling her Auntie Yvette, even if divorced now, he hadn’t changed.

Yvette Sommers was somewhat favorably surprised, quickly moved a chair over, diligently saying, "Mason, please sit, you see, it’s still the original couple, Elara was in a car accident, yet you came to visit her, truly sentimental and righteous."

Mason Jacobs smiled, didn’t sit down, but looked at Elara Hale and asked, "Are you alright?"

Elara Hale’s expression remained unmoved, looked at him and said, "Thank you for worrying, I’m fine, did you come to see me for something?"

Mason Jacobs’ dark eyes held steadily on her; his eyes were actually quite beautiful, when he looked at someone seriously, it made people feel like he only had eyes for them, very deep feeling.

He said, "I heard you met with an accident, ran through three red lights, came at top speed, afraid something had happened to you; now seeing you’re well, I can finally be at ease."

Yvette Sommers’ eyes shifted back and forth, pulling Aidan Sommers wanting to leave.

Aidan Sommers shook off her hand, he didn’t want to leave, he wanted to stay here to guard Elara Hale.

Yvette Sommers was exasperated, this foolish lad, clueless of the situation; clearly they were about to rekindle old feelings, yet he stood here like a log, how could they relax to talk properly?

Didn’t he realize being brother-in-law to a Jacobs Group president could bring huge benefits to him and his family?

But Aidan Sommers was oblivious to any hints; no matter how much Yvette Sommers gave him urges, he acted as if he saw nothing.

Mason Jacobs glanced at Aidan Sommers and said, "Aidan, I need to have a few words with your sister. Can you step out for a moment?"

Aidan shook his head, "No, I can’t."

Mason’s expression stiffened, a flicker of displeasure crossing his eyes. Just as he was about to speak again, he heard Elara Hale say, "You don’t need to say anything to me. You rushed here, speeding, to visit me after my accident. I appreciate that, but it is unnecessary. I’m doing fine, you can leave."

Mason paused in his actions but hadn’t yet spoken when Yvette Sommers looked disapprovingly at Elara and reprimanded, "Child, can’t you tell right from wrong? Even though Mason divorced you, upon hearing about your accident, he rushed right over to see you. You should appreciate the sentiment! In today’s world, a man with such loyalty and affection is rare!"

The anesthesia had worn off for Elara, making her legs and shoulders ache, and her entire body hurt, leaving her impatient. "Auntie Yvette, this is my own business."

Yvette raised her eyebrows, ready to lose her temper, but Mason interrupted her, saying, "Auntie Yvette, that’s just how Elara is; I’m used to it."

He smiled gently at Elara, "Don’t worry, if you don’t want to see me, I’ll leave now. You should rest properly first, and I’ll visit you again tomorrow."

After saying this, he nodded towards Yvette and turned to leave.

Watching Mason’s figure disappear outside the door, with the ward door closing again, Yvette was speechless towards Elara, her heart heavy with unfulfilled hopes. "Honestly, Elara, what were you thinking? Given his status, he put the past behind him to visit you, yet not a word of comfort from you. You’re really making me..."

"Auntie Yvette, I’ve said this is my own business." Elara repeated, somewhat impatiently looking at her. "If there’s nothing else, you should go back to take care of my dad."

"Ugh, you..." Yvette unhappily put her hands on her hips. "I’m saying this for your own good, you know? Without the Jacobs Family..."

She was interrupted by Aidan, "Mom, you should head back."

Yvette glared at him, but Aidan was unyielding, reminding her, "Uncle Hale can walk now, but his health still requires attention. You’ve been out for quite a while."

Yvette realized the truth in his words. Recently, Elara had been distant and cold towards her. If David Hale fully recovered from his leg injury, who knows what Elara might think, and Yvette couldn’t afford to upset her at this critical juncture.

She was still hoping David Hale would be her meal ticket long-term!

Thinking of this, she swallowed her words and reluctantly said, "Alright, I will leave now."

After Yvette left, Aidan looked at Elara, "I have class at school, so I’ll head out too."

Elara, enduring the discomfort, asked him, "In over six months you’ll be taking your college entrance exams. What direction do you plan for the future?"

Aidan was initially startled, then replied indifferently, "With my lousy grades, I’ll go wherever I can get into. I haven’t really decided what I want to do after that. If..."

He paused briefly, then continued with a more nonchalant tone, "If it doesn’t work out, joining the military wouldn’t be bad either."

Elara laughed upon hearing this, looking at him, "I saw your test scores from last month’s monthly exams, and overall they’re not bad. If you keep it up, you should be able to get into college. You’re smart; you’ve improved greatly with just a few months of effort, and I’m sure you’ll do even better in the entrance exams."

Her pain was intense; after saying so much, she panted slightly, pausing before continuing, "If you want to apply to the Federal Defense University, you might need to work a bit harder. However, don’t stress too much. Even if you don’t get in, you can apply to join the military after starting college and still develop in the army."

Aidan looked at her in surprise for a long time before asking, "Don’t you think... I’m being delusional?"

Six months ago, he was nothing but a troublemaker, constantly causing problems, and now he wants to be a soldier, defend the nation, and spend his life in the military. Is this not delusion?

Elara was taken aback by his words, then asked perplexedly, "Why think that way? A young person’s dream isn’t delusional; it’s a direction worth striving towards for a lifetime. I’m happy you’ve found your path at this time."

Aidan gazed at her blankly. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

She looked truly miserable, wrapped in bandages, her face pale like a ghost, wearing a big, ugly hospital gown.

Yet her eyes looking at him were so bright, full of understanding, trust... and appreciation.

Aidan suddenly felt his nose tingling, pretending to snort disdainfully, "I might not even join the military; maybe I’ll change my dream in a few days."

Elara smiled, "I’d wish you well in whatever you choose."

Feeling uneasy, Aidan picked up his backpack, stood up, and headed out, leaving a brief "I’m leaving."

"Alright."

Elara didn’t know that after Aidan exited the ward, he stood at the doorway for a long time.

He looked up, forcing back tears. He’d never felt so determined before; he must get into the military academy, become the best soldier, uphold the nation with iron will, and make achievements with pride.

Most importantly, he wanted to make her proud.

Aidan left with reddened eyes, his steps firm.

Elara pressed the nurse’s bell, pitifully asking for more anesthesia.

The nurse was in a bit of a dilemma and said, "Miss Hale, with your current condition, additional anesthesia isn’t advisable. It will be most painful for just these first two days; please bear with it."

Elara listened, feeling chilled. She’d never undergone surgery or faced such severe injury before; it was truly painful.

The nurse had been instructed by her superiors that the patient in this ward was of special status and needed careful attention. Initially, Elara requesting more anesthesia seemed troublesome; she feared Elara might cause a scene and she’d face a reprimand from her superiors.

Unexpectedly, after feeling disappointed, Elara told her stoically, "Alright, thank you. I’m fine, you can go about your work now."

The nurse was taken aback; this distinguished patient turned out to be so approachable and easy to talk to?

But not causing trouble made her happy, and after nodding at Elara, she left cheerfully.

Zion Fitzwilliam returned with Esther Carter.

While Lucy Taylor was making soup at home, she set the kitchen on fire. Zion, taking advantage of Elara sleeping, went back to check. Luckily, Lucy was unharmed, only suffering a few blisters on her arm. After crying loudly and having her injuries treated by the family doctor, she was picked up by her father, who, upon receiving news, sent someone to fetch her.

He had no choice but to go to a nearby upscale restaurant and order a few nutritious, easy-to-digest meals to take away, which consumed quite a bit of time.

Unexpectedly, upon entering, he saw Esther downstairs asking about Elara’s ward. Since the hospital wouldn’t casually disclose patient information, Esther was wandering around like a headless chicken, so Zion brought her up.

Esther saw Elara on the hospital bed, and her tears fell immediately, "Oh dear, how pitiful!"

She touched Elara’s bandages gently and, full of distress, lowered her voice, "Does it hurt?"

Elara was so much in pain that her psyche was fragile, nodding pitifully at Esther, "It hurts, really hurts. The effect of the anesthesia faded, and it feels like being torn apart."
