When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 90 - 0: Not Afraid of Him Anymore, Right?
After helping her, he dared to look at her with that kind of gaze.
Damn it, did he think he was blind?
Pei Yan took off his gloves and tossed them into her lap, bent down to pick up the bag that had fallen to the ground, and grabbed Jiang Shuyao’s wrist to pull her outside.
Lu Chen frowned slightly and interrupted in a leisurely voice, "Don’t you know that your actions are causing her a lot of trouble?"
Their steps halted at his words.
Jiang Shuyao’s heartbeat skipped half a beat, and she instinctively looked up at Pei Yan. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
His eyes were cold, and his face showed no emotion, as if he considered the words of the person behind him to be nothing but air.
But she didn’t dare take it lightly.
She called out softly, "Pei Yan, he didn’t mean it, let’s go."
The girl’s eyes were wet as she looked at him, with a look of comfort and appeal.
Jiang Shuyao’s slightly tense expression finally collapsed under a sudden, unexpected chuckle from the person beside her.
She blinked in astonishment, not understanding why he would laugh.
Pei Yan let go of the girl’s wrist and said indifferently, "Wait for me outside."
The nerves that had just relaxed were now taut once again.
Jiang Shuyao asked in a daze, "What are you going to do?"
"I’m not going to do anything."
He turned, but the girl grabbed him.
"Pei Yan." Her voice was soft and urgent, close to crying.
This is not the school; the slightest commotion here would alert the mall, and they’d call the police right away.
She gripped Pei Yan’s hand tightly, "If you dare to go back, I will never bother with you again, and I mean it. Don’t believe me? Just try!"
Pei Yan’s gaze turned cold, and he looked at her with a terrifying glare, "Are you threatening me?"
The girl didn’t speak but just looked at him resolutely.
He suddenly felt a bit defeated: damn, she had gotten braver now, not afraid of him anymore, right?
However, gradually, he saw tears welling up in the bottom of her eyes, and his heart suddenly tightened.
Fine, she had figured he would fall for her tactics.
Pei Yan looked away irritably and, carrying the bag, walked past the girl towards the mall entrance.
The situation eased, and Jiang Shuyao breathed a sigh of relief.
She turned around and gave Lu Chen an apologetic smile, then quickly followed the boy’s footsteps, leaving together.
Behind them, Lu Chen’s face was dark with his eyebrows knitted together.
He had watched the scene before him with intense focus and even clearly sensed the girl’s extreme caution around Pei Yan.
He had never seen her so guarded and careful around any other male, and that feeling oppressed him, making his chest feel as if it was blocked by a stone, unbearably uncomfortable.
Lu Chen had no idea how the two interacted in private.
But in that moment, he became even more convinced of what he felt inside.
In this world, everyone has the right to chase the moonlight.
Not just Pei Yan alone.
Now, there was also him, Lu Chen.
After the mall incident, when Jiang Shuyao faced Lu Chen again, she felt unbearably awkward.
Fortunately, he didn’t seem to take the little incident to heart at all. During the evening study competition group meeting, Lu Chen discussed the upcoming training plans with her as usual, with the same steady and trustworthy demeanor.
The senior year curriculum was intensive, and aside from their free time, they also had to prepare for the competition.
To boost the team’s morale before the official training commenced, Lu Chen suggested going out for a late-night snack after evening study. The idea was met with great enthusiasm, and everyone readily agreed.
The boys wouldn’t mind going back late, but Jiang Shuyao was the only girl in the whole group.
Lu Chen, considering this factor, switched the dinner venue to a hotpot restaurant just about 300 meters away from Yasong Residence after getting everyone’s agreement.
This hotpot restaurant was popular, filling up promptly at six o’clock every evening.
Lu Chen had booked the soup base and seats on his phone in advance, and the five members of their group made for a slightly crowded but cozy gathering.
Everyone tacitly left the seat against the wall for Jiang Shuyao, where it was more spacious and she wouldn’t be jostled by passing patrons.
With the class leader taking the lead, everyone was extremely lively that evening.
In the hearts of several boys, the transfer student Jiang Shuyao had always been out of reach, yet tonight, she was eating hotpot at the same table, showing an exceptionally relaxed demeanor, and even took the initiative to refill their tea.
"Come on, let’s take this opportunity to drink a toast with tea instead of liquor to our two group leaders. Please be gentle with us in future training. Don’t let us go bald at such a young age and drag down the overall attractiveness of Class Six, alright?"
The boys spoke with humor, and Jiang Shuyao couldn’t help but smile.
Lu Chen said, "Leave the looks to me. You guys just focus on raising our average scores and keeping Class Six’s position as the science leader in Yunzhong."
Laughter erupted once more.
The class leader usually seemed so serious, but his self-love in no way affected his grace.
Some people seem naturally endowed with a persuasive power, like Lu Chen.
It was as if no matter what he said or did, everyone gave him their unwavering support and understanding.
Jiang Shuyao mused to herself that managing relationships to the extent he did was indeed something she, with her social anxiety, could seriously learn from.
At ten past nine, as the hotpot meal was coming to an end, Jiang Shuyao got up to visit the restroom.
As she washed her hands, her phone, placed on the sink edge, rang. She glanced at the screen to see the words "little rascal" flashing.
Before leaving school, she had messaged him to say she had a class dinner and would leave first, but she didn’t wait for his reply and had gone with Lu Chen and the others by taxi to the hotpot restaurant.
The moment she answered the phone, she heard his lazy voice through the receiver, "Where are you eating? Why haven’t you come home yet?"
She pulled out a paper towel with one hand, wiping the water from her hands while responding, "Just near Yasong Residence, about to wrap up."
Then Jiang Shuyao asked another question, "Why are you rushing me? Is there something you need?"
There was a nonchalant click on the other end of the line.
"I’m reminding you, Jiang Shuyao. You haven’t forgotten what you promised me already, have you?"
She kept silent.
She probably guessed what he was referring to.
Jiang Shuyao pursed her lips and said softly, "I’ll let my classmates know. I’ll be right back."
"Hurry up. Ten minutes," he said.
"..."
Before hanging up the phone, she retorted speechlessly, "Why should I listen to you?"
That guy was naturally domineering, as if he thought she was so gentle that he could just push her around.
Coming out of the hotpot restaurant, the night breeze was cool. Jiang Shuyao wrapped her school uniform tighter around herself as she walked unhurriedly toward the corner of the street.
On the roadside, a boy squinted his eyes and casually leaned against a streetlamp, watching the girl walk past him without a sideways glance.
He whistled teasingly at her retreating figure, "Beauty, how nearsighted are you?"
Jiang Shuyao was startled.
She turned around in a daze to look toward the source of the sound, the person staring straight at her.
"Why are you here?"
Hadn’t he said he was home already when they spoke on the phone just now?
Jiang Shuyao stood still, her face filled with suspicion.
This guy couldn’t have been following them from the moment they entered the hotpot restaurant, could he?
She shivered suddenly and wrapped her school uniform even tighter around her.
Pei Yan took long strides over, removing his jacket as he walked. Under the girl’s expressionless gaze, he enveloped her completely with his down jacket, shielding her from the wind.
