When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 157: Do You Like Yan?
August 15, Rong University’s opening day.
"Check your luggage one more time, see if you’ve forgotten anything."
Jiang Shuyao silently obeyed her mother’s instruction and reopened her suitcase to go through her belongings.
Jiang Tingsong changed into his clothes and came out of the bedroom, looking at the mother and daughter. "No need to rush, we still have plenty of time, and we’re just crossing into another district."
The one happiest about his girl staying in Rong City was none other than her father himself.
He didn’t have to watch his child leave for a faraway place; it was just like when she was in high school, coming home on the weekends if she wanted. Convenient for the child and worry-free for the parents.
Just as they were about to leave, Jiang Tingsong suddenly remembered something he had forgotten and turned back to the study.
Only the mother and daughter remained at the entrance.
Zhu Yun pulled her daughter close and stroked her hair gently. "If it wasn’t for the surgery at the hospital, I really would’ve wished to join your father in taking you to school."
"No need, the patients are important."
Jiang Shuyao kept her gaze down as she unlocked her phone and glanced at the time on the screen.
With the separation imminent, Zhu Yun had so much she wanted to tell her, but seeing her daughter’s indifferent expression, she held back her words.
Forty whole days.
It was her first time being in a cold war with her child for so long since her daughter was little.
Zhu Yun often wondered where the problem had originated.
It was not until last night, when she got off work and pushed open the door to the studio, intending to help her child organize the paintings to take to school, that she inadvertently found those vibrant portraits in the storage cabinet, and it suddenly dawned on her.
"Yaoyao, do you like Yan?"
Her mother’s certain tone shattered Jiang Shuyao’s tranquil heart like a stone thrown into a still lake.
She stood there holding her phone, wordlessly stifling her emotions.
Her daughter’s reaction said it all, and Zhu Yun couldn’t help but sigh, consoling her, "Mom isn’t blaming you. You’ve grown up, and it’s normal to have someone you like. If you end up with Yan in the future, Mom will fully support you."
Entering the university campus, she hadn’t expected her mother to speak to her about these matters.
Jiang Shuyao managed to force a smile and said to her mother in front, "Thanks, Mom."
Apart from gratitude, she could not express anything else.
Who can predict the future? Does liking someone mean you can definitely be with them?
Before, she thought you could.
But after Pei Yan left, she considered it wishful thinking.
Down in the parking lot, her father loaded the luggage into the trunk, and Jiang Shuyao stood by the car door, waving goodbye to her mother.
At her request, she had chosen to live on campus for college.
After all, it was an opportunity to develop her child’s self-reliance, and both Zhu Yun and Jiang Tingsong gladly agreed.
On registration day, the campus was especially bustling.
As the top university in the province, it attracted all sorts of top students from the exams, each freshman beaming with promise. Even though everyone wore a mask, the eagerness in their eyes was unstoppable.
There were reception tents for freshmen from different departments, and directional signs were set up along the way.
After submitting their nucleic acid test reports, parents visited the campus and helped the students move their luggage to the foot of the dormitory, where the club and volunteer association’s upperclassmen and women collectively led them upstairs.
"Dad, you can go back first; I can manage on my own."
Her father wore a worried look on his face.
Jiang Shuyao said: "Making the bed, putting on the duvet cover, if I get hungry I’ll go buy food, if I’m cold I’ll put on more clothes; I’m not a little kid anymore, these things won’t be a problem for me."
Her father finally cracked a smile with her easygoing tone.
He patted his little girl on the head, "Yaoyao is mom and dad’s pride. Keep it up."
"Keep it up~" Jiang Shuyao imitated her father’s fist-pump, her bright eyes curving into crescents.
Room 618 was empty.
Rong University dorms were four-person rooms, her bed close to the balcony.
The school wasn’t far from home, so Jiang Shuyao only brought clothes for summer and autumn. She opened her suitcase and began folding clothes one by one, placing them neatly into the cabinet.
Halfway through, voices at the door signaled the arrival of her two other roommates.
The moment they saw Jiang Shuyao squatting before her suitcase, one of the girls’ eyes lit up like a 100-watt light bulb.
"Oh my, you are so beautiful!"
Feeling slightly embarrassed by such straightforward praise on first meeting, Jiang Shuyao curved her lips into a smile and nodded at them, "Hello, my name is Jiang Shuyao."
"Fang Wei."
"He Shumiao."
After introductions, He Shumiao eagerly pulled out local specialties from her bag to share with everyone.
Jiang Shuyao thanked her as she accepted the gift, noting the ’Langshui Beef Jerky’ label on the packaging.
Langshui was an ancient city with a long history, a national five-star tourist destination.
He Shumiao offered to take everyone to her hometown during the National Day break, offering free food, accommodation, and guide services.
In college, roommates come from all over the place. Jiang Shuyao and Fang Wei were more on the quiet side, munching on the beef jerky while sitting and listening to He Shumiao chat about all sorts of things.
The afternoon flew by, and they were unable to wait for their fourth roommate as they had to attend a class meeting at seven o’clock in the teaching building.
The first class meeting in university was to meet their academic advisor and fellow students. Arriving early was important to choose the best seats and get a feel for the atmosphere.
The corridors of the teaching building were crowded with freshmen, as busy as a marketplace.
It took some effort for the three girls to find their class but eventually sat down in the front row.
In a short while, the students all arrived. Looking around, there were about fifty people in the class, mostly male, with so few women that they could be counted on one’s hands.
He Shumiao whispered beside her, "As expected of a monk’s major, look at this strong male presence and sparse female one."
Fang Wei glanced at her, retorting, "Is that happiness or regret in your voice?"
"Regret what? Everyday in class I get to feast my eyes on a bunch of handsome guys, how comfortable."
"Whether they’re nice to look at or not is debatable, gotta remove those masks to know for sure."
Upon hearing Fang Wei’s comment, He Shumiao instinctively glanced at a boy in the back row. His greasy skin and a forehead dotted with pimples made her quickly turn her head back.
The roommate’s comedic reaction made both Jiang Shuyao and Fang Wei struggle to hold back their laughter.
It wasn’t until a young male teacher entered the classroom that the noisy environment quieted down.
The teacher was tall and dressed casually, standing at the front with a smile as he greeted everyone.
"My name is Tan Qian, your academic advisor for the computer science department this year. You can think of me as kind of like a homeroom teacher. Looking forward to a pleasant cooperation over the next four years."
Teacher Qin spoke without too much embellishment, keeping it simple and to the point since he had to make appearances in other classes in the department, so the pace of the class meeting was quite fast.
When the time for self-introductions came around, Jiang Shuyao had the first student number in class. She stood up from her seat, turned sideways to face everyone, and took off her mask.
The lighting was bright, the girl’s features refined, her face excessively beautiful.
Both male and female students stared at her, utterly enchanted.
After she said her name, someone questioned in doubt, "Which three characters? I remember this year’s top science scholar in the city is also named Jiang something Shuyao."
Instantly, because of the boy’s surprise, the classroom erupted into a small commotion.
