Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Chi Mo 58

Chi Mo could handle the entire thing by herself. Her outfit was far from formal, but it was suitable for almost any occasion and made her stand out in a crowd. From the moment she stepped out of her hotel room, countless eyes were on her.

Chi Mo was long accustomed to being the center of attention. After getting into the car at the hotel entrance, she headed for the studio where Gao Jing was getting her styling done.

When Chi Mo entered the studio, Gao Jing was being held in place by a makeup artist, getting her makeup done in front of a mirror. Not one to sit still, she said, "That outfit looks gorgeous on you."

The makeup artist glanced at Chi Mo too. "We have a love-hate relationship with Ms. Chi’s face. Her bone structure is just too beautiful, but because she’s so beautiful, there’s no room for us to work our magic."

Gao Jing opened one eye. "Why do I feel like you’ve gotten even more beautiful?"

Chi Mo was very calm. "Must be your imagination. I’ve always been like this. But speaking of which, why did I see Brother Xiang’s car downstairs? What’s going on with you two?"

Gao Jing was open and at ease. "It’s just as you see. He’s very considerate, the two kids like him, and my parents are happy with him too."

"Don’t change the subject. What do *you* think?" Chi Mo was direct. ’Why is Gao Jing talking about everyone but herself? When it comes to something like this, shouldn’t her own feelings be the most important?’

Gao Jing’s eyes curved into a smile. "Of course I think he’s great. Really. It’s not because I’m considering everyone else. I genuinely think he’s a wonderful person. He’s shown me what a normal married life is like."

"I don’t have to look after the house by myself, and I don’t have to take care of the kids by myself. Having someone to share the burden with me... that feeling is truly amazing."

Chi Mo was good at getting to the point. "Married life? You got married? When did that happen?"

Gao Jing said, "We just registered last week. You were in N City, so I didn’t want to bother you. Since you’re here this time, I was planning to treat you to a meal alone. Don’t be mad."

Chi Mo shook her head. "I’m not mad. I’m just a little sad I couldn’t witness that moment in person. I’m only happy for you that you’ve found your ideal life partner. I’m so glad to see you’ve put all those worries behind you."

Gao Jing said, "I’ve figured it out now. The reason I had so many worries before was that I wasn’t earning enough back then. I was worried I couldn’t give my children a better life."

"I was worried that if I remarried, my ex-husband would stop paying child support, and the kids’ standard of living would suffer. Now I have a small career of my own. When it comes down to it, it’s the money that gives you confidence."

"As for child support, if he’s willing to pay, great. If not, Xiang Zhe and I can still raise the two kids just fine."

Chi Mo was concerned. "Doesn’t Xiang Zhe have two kids as well? How do you all get along?"

Gao Jing shrugged. "I saw them once on a video call. It’s no big deal. His kids are already in middle school, so honestly, I don’t really need to worry about them. Besides, from the way Xiang Zhe talks, their stepfather treats them very well."

Chi Mo’s worries finally dissipated. "That’s for the best. I’m happy for you. After the event is over, I’ll treat you guys to a meal."

Gao Jing said, "Okay! I won’t be polite then."

’Honestly, Chi Mo had never expected Gao Jing and Xiang Zhe to get together. After all, in her memory, the two of them had barely kept in touch after the show ended. Could the butterfly effect really cause such a huge change?’

While Gao Jing got her makeup done, Chi Mo sat to the side. The event didn’t start until evening anyway, so she had plenty of patience to wait for her. Deep down, if she had to go alone, she would be rather reluctant.

’Maybe Tan You’s homebody nature is rubbing off on me,’ Chi Mo concluded.

Tan You was not pleased. "I think it’s your state of mind that has changed. You’re starting to explore your inner world and learning to be alone with yourself."

’Perhaps,’ Chi Mo thought with a small smile. ’I’ve discovered that one has to learn to live with oneself. I quite like my current state. Now, if someone were to suddenly barge into my life, I would just find it a disturbance.’

"You’re overcorrecting," Tan You said objectively. "I think you’re a bit conflicted. You want to be free and on your own, but you don’t have enough courage to face your parents or the whole world. Or rather, you can’t convince them."

"You say it’s fine to be without a man, but in reality, your heart isn’t strong enough to face the world independently. You still long for someone to cherish and take meticulous care of you."

"You want to be in a relationship, but you shrink back. You want to refuse, but you lack the confidence to face the world alone. That’s why you’re so twisted up inside."

’You really do understand me,’ Chi Mo sighed in her thoughts. ’That’s exactly my state right now. Conflicted, all twisted up inside... I’m afraid of repeating the same mistakes. The lessons from the last two times were more than enough.’

Tan You said, "Then just watch what the man does. I’ll say it again: if he’s not resolute enough, don’t choose him."

’But being resolute is so difficult,’ Chi Mo thought with a wry smile. ’People’s hearts are fickle. Where can you find someone like that? Besides, I don’t want to just jump into a relationship casually.’

"I’m not telling you to choose casually," Tan You suggested. "You can observe first. The so-called process of observing, interacting, and understanding requires an opportunity to get to know them."

"Look at how you treat your suitors. You avoid them whenever you can. How are you supposed to observe their character like that? Give others a chance, and at the same time, you’re giving yourself a chance."

"If all you want is a passionate romance, then you can pretend I never said any of that. A romance can start at any time, but a reliable partner can’t."

Chi Mo thought about it and realized it was true. She wasn’t some naive little girl who didn’t know what real life was like. Tan You’s words, while pragmatic, were very much to the point.

’I get it now. So I need to be more proactive and make an effort to engage with the outside world.’ Perhaps because she had come to a realization, Chi Mo’s entire body relaxed. ’Just as you said, I need to choose someone who is already a good person, not just someone who is good *to me*.’

"Uh-huh. It’s good that you’ve figured that out." Tan You shrugged. Seeing that Chi Mo was about to speak to Gao Jing, she went quiet to do her own thing.

Gao Jing was being extra gossipy. "What were you just thinking about?"

Chi Mo didn’t hide it from her. "I was just seeing how happy you are now, and it made me envious. I want to be in a relationship too."

Gao Jing asked, "That’s great! What’s your type? Is it still what you said before—someone who doesn’t vie for attention, cause drama, is sensible, and doesn’t get jealous?"

Chi Mo smiled. "That was just to fob off the production team. It’s not like you didn’t know."

’Thinking back, the points Tan You had made back then were brilliant. Perhaps I can never be as strong as Tan You.’

Gao Jing said, "I kind of figured that out later. So, what kind of person are you looking for? I can keep an eye out for you among the men in my circle."

Chi Mo yawned. "I haven’t really thought about it. I guess it still comes down to character. Someone where we can accept each other’s shortcomings while also appreciating each other’s strengths. I think that would be enough."
