Chapter 240: Heartstrings in Conflict

Zinnia took a shaky step closer, her hands trembling as she clutched her purse. "You... you remember me?" she asked, her voice breaking, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.

The man nodded slowly, his expression soft yet intense. "I do. At first, everything was a blur, but when I saw you... it all came rushing back. I’m sorry it took so long."

Her legs wobbled, and she nearly collapsed, but she steadied herself by gripping the edge of his bed. "James... is it really you?"

He reached out, his hand trembling as it brushed against hers. "It’s me, Zinnia. I don’t know why things happened the way they did but I know one thing—seeing you again feels like coming home."

Tears streamed down her face as she searched his eyes for answers. "I thought you were gone forever. I... I waited, James. I never stopped waiting."

"I know," he whispered, his voice thick with regret. "I wish I could go back and fix everything, but all I can do now is be here. For you."

Zinnia sobbed quietly, her emotions too overwhelming to contain. "You have no idea how much I missed you," she said, her voice shaking. "Every day, I prayed for this moment, for you to come back. And now you’re here, but... how? Where have you been? What happened to you?"

He closed his eyes briefly, his expression pained. "I don’t have all the answers yet, Zinnia. There are gaps in my memory, and I’m still piecing things together. But I promise you, I’ll do whatever it takes to make things right."

"Zinnia," he said again, his tone earnest. "I’m so sorry for everything you’ve been through. But I’m here now, and I’ll never leave you again." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Her heart swelled with emotions she thought she’d buried long ago. Though uncertainty loomed over their reunion. "You better not," she whispered.

The man—James—squeezed her hand gently, his eyes never leaving hers. "I promise," he said, his voice steady. "I’m here to stay."

As Zinnia walked out of the hospital room, her thoughts spiraled into chaos. James’s words lingered in her ears, his smile vivid in her memory, but it was quickly replaced by Samuel’s image. The weight of their engagement—the promises she had made—pressed heavily on her chest.

She leaned against the wall in the quiet corridor, taking deep breaths to steady herself. What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to say to Samuel?

Her hand instinctively went to her engagement ring, her fingers trembling as they traced its edges. Samuel had been patient, supportive, even when he knew her heart carried scars from her past with James. But now that past was alive, standing before her, smiling at her like no time had passed.

How will Samuel take this? she thought, guilt clawing at her. He’s been nothing but understanding. But knowing my history with James... this will crush him.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her out of her turmoil. She glanced at the screen and saw Samuel’s name. Her heart dropped. She hesitated, her thumb hovering over the screen, before finally answering.

"Hey," she said, trying to steady her voice.

"Hey," Samuel replied, his tone warm but distant, the way it always was when he was consumed with work. "How are your parents? Everything okay?"

"They’re fine," she answered quickly, her voice cracking slightly. "Dad’s doing better, and Mom is as cheerful as ever."

There was a pause on the other end. "You don’t sound fine. Are you okay?"

Zinnia bit her lip, closing her eyes. Do I tell him? How do I even start?

"I’m just... tired," she lied, hoping he wouldn’t press further.

"Take it easy, Zia," he said softly. "I know things have been hectic lately with the wedding and everything else. Just... remember you’re not alone, okay?"

The guilt surged again, nearly suffocating her. "I know," she whispered. "Thank you."

As they ended the call, Zinnia felt tears well up in her eyes. What am I doing? She couldn’t shake the thought of James—the man she once loved with all her heart—and Samuel, the man she had promised to build a life with.

She slid down the wall, her head in her hands, trying to reconcile the conflicting emotions swirling inside her.

Samuel doesn’t know yet. But he deserves to. He deserves the truth.

But how would he react? He had always been so composed, but she knew this news would cut deeply. Samuel had never spoken much about his feelings, but his actions spoke volumes. He had worked tirelessly to make her feel loved, safe, and secure.

And James... Her thoughts shifted to the last time she had seen him before his disappearance. She remembered the quiet excitement in his eyes when he had asked to meet her that night. She had known he was going to propose. And now he was back, saying he remembered her, that he still cared.

"How do I choose?" she whispered to herself.

A memory surfaced—Samuel’s words from weeks ago: "Zinnia, no matter what, I’ll fight for us. For you."

Would he still feel the same if he knew James was back? And James... what did he expect of her now?

The hallway felt colder, the weight of her predicament nearly unbearable. She pressed her hands to her face, trying to compose herself. One thing was clear: she couldn’t keep this a secret for long.

Samuel would have to know. But the thought of facing him, of seeing the hurt in his eyes, was almost too much to bear.

Her phone buzzed again, this time with a text from Timmy asking, "Are you okay? Let me know if you need anything."

She stared at the message, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. Instead of replying, she locked her phone and stood up, steeling herself.

Zinnia gripped her phone tightly, her thoughts swirling in an unrelenting storm. She took a deep breath, trying to muster the courage to do what needed to be done.

"No," she whispered to herself, her voice firm despite the chaos in her chest. "I have to tell Samuel the truth now. He deserves to know."
