Chapter 87: Chapter 87: He Only Cares About Luna

Blaze carried Luna back to Lakeside Manor.

He placed her on the sofa. "How about you try moving your leg?"

Luna lifted her leg. She had her strength back.

They both sighed in relief. At least it wasn’t a major problem.

"Did you catch a chill?" Blaze asked, rubbing her leg. He couldn’t immediately pinpoint the cause. "Why did your leg suddenly start bothering you? A calcium deficiency?"

Luna pursed her lips, lowering her head, not daring to meet Blaze’s gaze. "I don’t know."

She couldn’t bring herself to tell Blaze what had been running through her mind on the way over, so she had no choice but to lie.

Blaze brought her a glass of hot water, then swapped her outdoor shoes for a pair of comfortable, fluffy slippers.

"Blaze, there weren’t any problems with the prenatal check-up reports, were there?" Luna asked uncertainly, clutching her glass.

She was the product of inbreeding.

’Just because a gene isn’t expressed doesn’t mean it isn’t there.’

’What if I pass a recessive gene on to Lucky?’

She was terrified.

That’s why she had to be absolutely sure that Lucky was all right.

Blaze didn’t stop what he was doing, but a flicker of hesitation crossed his dark eyes before his gaze landed on Luna.

Her head was bowed as she sat there quietly, looking utterly helpless and lost.

Blaze contemplated for a moment; he already had his answer.

"I’ve thought it over. Everything was normal. The doctor didn’t order any special tests, so there shouldn’t be any problems."

Luna still wasn’t reassured. ’What if there’s a hereditary chromosomal disorder that the equipment can’t detect?’

"Blaze..."

"I’m here."

Luna bit her lip, the words catching in her throat.

’Blaze is such a good person. He’s exceptional, so caring, and so thorough in everything he does.’

’His life has already been hard enough. He doesn’t deserve to be hurt again.’

She couldn’t bring herself to do it. Forcing a smile, she said, "I’m fine now. You should go take care of Grandpa."

Blaze’s sleeves were still rolled up. ’He must have been washing Grandpa’s face and feet just now.’

The muscles of his forearms were long and powerful, veins visible beneath his fair skin.

"Someone’s with Grandpa. I’ll carry you upstairs. If you’re worried about your mother, I’ll make a trip to Crimson Hall."

Luna said gratefully, "That would be for the best."

Blaze carried her upstairs and helped Luna change into loungewear.

He threw on a jacket himself before heading to Crimson Hall.

Grant was tidying up the kitchen. When he saw Blaze arrive, he said politely, "Good evening, sir."

"How is Mrs. Axton?"

"Her fever’s gone down. She slept all afternoon and is knitting now. I’m simmering some apple and pear water for her to drink tonight."

"You carry on. I’m just here to check on her."

With that, Blaze headed toward Jenna Axton’s room.

Jenna Axton did seem to be in much better spirits. She was sitting in a comfy armchair, crocheting a white knit hat decorated with a cute strawberry pattern.

Hearing footsteps, Jenna Axton looked up, her face breaking into a loving smile. "Blaze."

Blaze sat down on a small stool across from her. "Luna came home after dinner. She’s a bit tired, but she was still worried about you, so I came to check."

"It’s nothing serious now, so don’t you two worry," Jenna Axton said, her tone casual.

"Mom, if there are gatherings like today’s in the future and you don’t want to interact with the Frosts, you can just tell me. Please don’t harm yourself; it scares Luna."

Jenna Axton’s hand slipped, and she instantly dropped several stitches.

She tried to cover for her mistake. "What are you talking about? I really do have a cold. The Frosts saved my life, why wouldn’t I want to see them?"

She appeared perfectly composed as she picked up her crochet hook and began carefully fixing the stitches.

Blaze’s gaze was piercing. "Because you’re Adriana Frost, my mother Susie’s good friend."

CLINK~

The crochet hook clattered to the floor.

Jenna Axton swallowed nervously, her hand clutching the knit hat. Her voice was strained. "When did you find out?"

"I’ve suspected for a long time. I only confirmed it just now."

Blaze stared at Jenna Axton’s face, searching his memory for a similar face and voice. The woman before him now seemed more familiar.

"Luna told me the poison you had was the same as mine. Rosalind Fairchild was the one who poisoned me. That poison is rare and difficult to counteract, so I suspected a connection between you and her back then."

As Blaze spoke, other details surfaced in his mind. He realized he could have figured it out sooner if he had only paid closer attention.

"At dinner today, Uncle Frost mentioned his long-lost younger sister. I suddenly thought of you. Your given names sound the same; only the surnames are different."

In truth, it was Luna’s reaction just now that had confirmed his suspicions.

After Luna felt unwell, her only concern was whether there were any problems with Lucky’s prenatal check-up results.

She was desperate to ask but couldn’t bring herself to say the words out loud.

She had no choice but to swallow her questions and worry all alone.

"Does Luna know?" Jenna Axton’s biggest fear was that Luna would be heartbroken if she knew. ’Will she blame me for giving birth to her?’

"She’s smart. She’s already guessed, she just hasn’t said it," Blaze didn’t hide the truth from her.

’They’ll all be living together at Fairchild Estate from now on. There’s no need for family to keep secrets from one another.’

The strength seemed to drain from Jenna Axton. With no heart to continue crocheting the hat, she set it aside and stood up.

The past was too painful to recall. The sky that night had looked just as it did now—the world hovering in the twilight between day and night.

"I drank the water Rosalind Fairchild gave me. I was about to go home, but there were people standing by my car, so I didn’t dare approach it."

"I knew something was wrong with the water, that Rosalind Fairchild was trying to harm me. My only choice was to go back and find my eldest brother and my father for help."

"But one of them was with your father, and the other was with your grandfather."

"I caught a ride with a friend I trusted. She drove me home."

"My second brother, who was supposed to be abroad for a diplomatic post, was at home. Our whole family thought he had left. Rosalind Fairchild probably thought he was gone too, that no one was watching over me, and that’s why she went ahead with her plan."

Having also been victimized by Rosalind Fairchild, Blaze knew all too well how terrifying those drugs were.

"The Frost family raised me for over twenty years..."

As Jenna Axton recounted the past, she was overcome with guilt, covering her face and sobbing.

"My second brother studied languages so hard to finally become a diplomat. That was his dream since he was a child. I couldn’t ruin his reputation."

"My very presence would only harm my second brother and affect his career."

"All I could do was leave Valoria. By the time I got everything settled, I discovered I was pregnant with Luna."

Blaze listened to her story, standing perfectly still.

He couldn’t understand people who left for what they perceived as someone else’s good.

’Any problem can be solved. Running away is the most irresponsible response.’

But it wasn’t his decision, and he didn’t particularly care. All he cared about was Luna.

"How has Luna’s health been since she was a child?" This was the real reason he had come to Crimson Hall.

Jenna Axton slowly turned around, her tear-filled eyes fixed on Blaze as she tried to understand the meaning behind his question.

Blaze added, "Luna is worried there’s something wrong with Lucky. I don’t want her to live in constant fear and anxiety, all alone, the way my mother did."

Pregnant women are sensitive and vulnerable, prone to letting their minds run wild. Even a smart woman like Luna was no exception.

"I am not the Frost family’s biological daughter. I was adopted. I have no blood relation to them."

Blaze nodded. "I’ll find a way to tell Luna."

"Blaze, please don’t mention any of this to the Frosts," Jenna Axton pleaded.

"I won’t interfere in your family’s affairs. Fairchild Estate will always be your home."

"Thank you, Blaze."

"Whether as my mother-in-law or as Aunt Adriana, you are someone I am indebted to and must take care of."

Jenna Axton began to laugh through her tears. "This is wonderful, Blaze. Truly wonderful."

’Susie, do you see this?’

’Look how wonderfully Blaze has grown up.’

’You... you must be happy and at peace now, too.’
