Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Mutton Hotpot on a Snowy Day

Luna Axton stared at the little duck mold on the ground, Eliana Yates’s words echoing in her mind.

’How is it childish for me to play with a little duck toy?’

’Who made a rule that mothers can’t play with toys?’

’On top of that, I’m pregnant. Is Eliana Yates really going to call my unborn child mentally deficient just because she dislikes me?’

’Eliana Yates has gone way too far!’

She wouldn’t let Eliana Yates verbally abuse her again and again, nor would she simply ignore it.

Luna Axton looked up, her gaze icy.

"What does my ring have to do with you? And my life certainly doesn’t need your scrutiny. You should spend more time on your studies, learn a thing or two about jewelry. Then maybe you wouldn’t be so quick to call everything a rhinestone. Just because you’ve never seen anything nice, do you assume everyone else is as cheap as you?"

Luna Axton was confident that with Blaze Fairchild’s means, he would never try to fool her with a rhinestone.

She said it all in one breath. Eliana Yates tried to interrupt her several times, but failed.

The fury in Eliana Yates’s eyes reached its peak, as if she were about to breathe fire and burn Luna to a crisp.

"What do you mean by that?" Eliana Yates asked through gritted teeth. ’Does she know something?’

Luna Axton flashed a brilliant smile. Dressed all in white, she was like a rose in the snow—beautiful, but with a bone-chilling iciness.

"Don’t understand?" Her lazy voice was tinged with mockery. "Maybe you should brush up on plain English."

Eliana Yates’s heart skipped a beat, and a flicker of panic crossed her eyes.

’Luna Axton has always just taken it silently. The fact that she dares to mock me today must mean she knows something.’

’If Luna Axton tells anyone, I’m finished.’

’I can’t let that happen!’

Having lost all reason, Eliana Yates raised her hand to teach Luna Axton a lesson—that some things should not be said.

Luna Axton noticed the shift in Eliana Yates’s mood and realized what she was about to do. Instinctively, she lifted the toy in her hand to block the impending blow.

In a flash, a sharp SMACK was followed by Eliana Yates’s cry of pain.

A fine spray of snow hit Luna Axton’s face. It was cool, but she felt nothing else.

Stunned by the sudden turn of events, Eliana Yates froze on the spot. Her hand had been stopped in midair by the little duck toy.

Years of maintaining her composure and the stinging pain on her face made her bite back the question of "Who did that?"

"Oh dear, Yates, I’m so sorry." Assistant Frost’s voice drew closer along with his footsteps. "It’s all Rowe’s fault. He ducked his head, and the snowball hit you instead."

Paige chimed in to smooth things over. "My bad, my bad. Eliana, how about you hit me with a snowball to get even?"

Luna Axton glanced over to where Paige was standing. He was a good ten meters away from her and Eliana Yates.

Eliana Yates was both humiliated and furious. But with Assistant Frost and Paige both apologizing and everyone’s eyes on her, she couldn’t show the slightest hint of anger.

She relaxed her aching jaw and forced a smile. "It’s fine, it didn’t hurt at all."

She nonchalantly wiped the melted snow from her face and brushed the flakes from her chest.

Assistant Frost stared at the red mark on her face, looking extremely apologetic as he asked with concern, "Your face is all red. Are you sure you’re okay? It’s my fault, I threw it a bit too hard. I never thought it would hit you."

’I already said I’m fine, so why is he still spewing all this nonsense?’

"It’s really nothing, Assistant Frost. Please don’t worry about it." ’This is so humiliating! I’m the one who got hit, yet I have to put on a smiling face.’ "I just have sensitive skin. It gets red easily."

"Oh." Assistant Frost nodded in understanding. "I see. Well, as long as you’re all right. But you have to tell us if you’re not."

Eliana Yates unclenched the fists at her sides, her smile widening. "If there’s nothing else, Assistant Frost, I’ll get back to my work."

"Sure, sure. Go on, then. Keep up the good work."

As Eliana Yates stomped away resentfully, Luna Axton’s gaze shifted to Assistant Frost.

The gentle and humble Assistant Frost actually had such a mischievous, sly side to him.

He met her gaze without flinching, giving her a slight raise of his eyebrow and a wink.

Luna Axton simply smiled, not saying a word. Her lips parted silently to mouth the words, "Thank you."

The moment Paige had backed up Assistant Frost, Luna Axton knew something was up.

From where Paige was standing, even if the snowball had been aimed at him, there was no way it could have hit Eliana Yates.

There was only one explanation.

Assistant Frost had noticed the confrontation and used the snowball to stop Eliana Yates from hitting her.

"You’re Ian’s wife, and you’re pregnant," Assistant Frost explained in a low voice. "We can’t let anything happen to you."

"Luna, come over and make some little ducks!" May Ford called out from beside the snowman. "Let’s make a whole duck army around the snowman!"

"Coming!" Luna Axton replied. After checking that her little duck mold was undamaged, she trudged through the snow to join her.

No one knew exactly when Eliana Yates left Concordia Medical Hall.

It was only when May Ford was asking everyone if they were okay with lamb hot pot for lunch that she realized Eliana Yates was gone.

May Ford called her, and it turned out Eliana Yates had already gone home.

A group of them, having had their fill of playing in the snow, gathered around the electric stove in the dispensary—normally used for brewing herbal decoctions—to warm their hands, which were all frozen red.

May Ford hung up and fixed her gaze on her son, Ethan Frost. "Look at you. How old are you? You get into a snowball fight and don’t know when to hold back. You’ve sent that poor girl running home."

Luna Axton lowered her eyes, not daring to look at May Ford.

Ethan Frost retorted, full of self-righteousness, "We were just fooling around, how could I have paid that much attention? Besides, she said herself that she was fine."

May Ford slapped him on the back. "Just because someone says they’re fine doesn’t mean they are."

She turned to Mason Frost beside her. "What did Dad say? If he agrees to lamb hot pot, I’ll have my little brother cook it and bring it over."

"I agree," said Mason. "I’ll call Russell." He took out his phone and stepped outside to make the call.

Luna Axton considered the family’s exchange. It seemed Eliana Yates wasn’t very popular with them.

’And yet, Eliana Yates is always so respectful to them on the surface,’ she thought. ’Not at all like how she treats me, with that blatant disdain and contempt.’

’Could they all see through her two-faced, backstabbing nature?’

"When did Uncle get here?" Hearing his uncle’s name, Ethan Frost’s voice was filled with unconcealed excitement. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

May Ford knew her son worshipped his unconventional younger uncle. "Last night. I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d go and disturb his rest."

"I’ll go get him," Ethan Frost said, jumping to his feet, eager to see his uncle right away.

Luna Axton sat with the others, quietly listening to their chatter.

Concordia Medical Hall didn’t have many staff members, but the atmosphere was wonderful. They were as close-knit and harmonious as a family.

The snow continued to fall in great, silent drifts. Inside, everyone sat talking and laughing, and the leisurely time passed by in a flash.

She had just replied to a message from Blaze Fairchild asking what she was having for lunch when Ethan Frost walked in, carrying a large pot.

Before he could even speak, everyone, quick on the uptake, rose to their feet to help bring things in.

Luna Axton was about to get up and do what she could to help, but an older female colleague from the dispensary stopped her. "Don’t you move. Just sit tight. Let us handle it."

Warmed by their considerate treatment, Luna Axton smiled. "Alright, then I’ll just sit here and wait for the feast."

"Of course."

Everyone else went out, leaving Luna Axton sitting there obediently. In the quiet room, the only sound was the soft rustle of the falling snow.

’Days like this are true happiness,’ Luna Axton thought. ’I wonder what Mom is doing right now?’

A set of footsteps approached, and Luna Axton looked up.

A middle-aged man she’d never seen before entered, carrying hot pot equipment in both hands. He had an upright posture and wore a black, mid-length down jacket. He carried himself with a calm and easygoing air, but there was an underlying firmness to his steady presence.

Luna Axton immediately stood up to help him with the things he was carrying.

The man gave her a gentle smile. "It’s all right, it’s all right. Please, sit." His voice was warm and modest, with the refined grace of a man from a distinguished family.

Luna Axton brought a stool over for him.

’This young woman is quite lovely,’ he thought, ’with such clear, delicate features. A pleasant sight.’

’Especially her eyes. They’re so expressive, as if they could talk.’

"Are you studying traditional Chinese medicine as well?" Russell Frost asked.

"My name is Luna Axton. I’m a clinical medicine student at Valoria Medical College. Concordia Medical Hall was recruiting three student interns who are interested in traditional Chinese medicine, and I’m one of them."

Luna Axton’s explanation was concise, giving Russell Frost all the relevant information at once.

"Traditional Chinese medicine is a national treasure. The true way to carry on its legacy is for young people like you to take an interest and apply it to healing and saving lives."

Luna Axton nodded. "I agree."

"Then why didn’t you major in traditional Chinese medicine?"
