Chapter 186: Chapter 186: I Shouldn’t Have Fallen in Love with You

"Never," Jett Sterling answered, his tone decisive and final.

Shirley Wentworth’s heart ached as if it were being torn in two. With a self-mocking laugh, she said, "I already knew you’d say that, but I couldn’t let it go. I had to come and ask for a clear answer."

"But Jett, as his mother, all I want is to give him a complete family. Is that so wrong?" Shirley Wentworth defiantly tilted her chin up, clinging to her last shred of pride and dignity. "I admit I was the one who drugged Vivian, but so what? You’ll never understand the lengths a mother will go for her child!"

"Don’t try to portray yourself as some great martyr. Having an unscrupulous mother like you is Elle’s shame." Jett Sterling’s cold eyes regarded her with disdain. "Your goal is to replace Vivian as Mrs. Sterling. Let me tell you right now, that is absolutely impossible. I will never marry you, and I certainly won’t marry you for Elle’s sake."

Shirley Wentworth’s lips trembled with rage.

Jett Sterling continued, each word deliberate and forceful. "I’m accepting Elle, but not because he’s my son. I had no intention of keeping a child you bore by my side. I was just going to give you money to raise him."

"But because Vivian is fond of him, my affection extends to him. That’s why I’m letting him live at Sycamore Bay. If that led you to believe you had an opportunity here, it only proves how naive and stupid you are."

Shirley Wentworth completely broke down, screaming in anguish, "I am naive! I am stupid! I never should have fallen in love with you! But let me tell you, Jett, the fact is I gave birth to your son! No matter how much you look down on me or despise me, we share the most intimate of bonds!"

"So you love Vivian? And you’re both so happy? You clearly don’t understand women at all. No woman would ever accept her husband having a son with someone else! Even if I can’t have you, I’ve at least planted a thorn in Vivian’s heart. I’ll make sure your marriage is anything but happy!"

"You overestimate yourself." Jett Sterling’s fingers tapped lightly on the armrest of his wheelchair. "You can’t afford the consequences of this," he said coolly. "I’ll be taking this up directly with the Wentworth Family."

"No!" Shirley Wentworth panicked. "Jett, even if you have no feelings for me, you have to think of Elle! If you go after his mother’s family, how will he ever hold his head high when word gets out?"

"You brought this upon yourself. You should have considered the consequences when you schemed against my wife." Jett Sterling closed his eyes. "Easton, show her out."

"Yes, sir." Easton Rivers stepped forward. "Miss Wentworth, if you please."

Shirley Wentworth bit her lip, a cold sneer on her face. "You’re so cruel, Jett. Even a vicious tiger won’t eat its own cubs, yet you show no consideration for Elle whatsoever! But you can never deny that Elle is our biological son! You may not care about this child, but I refuse to believe the rest of the Sterling Family feels the same!"

Jett Sterling didn’t say another word to her, simply raising a hand.

Easton Rivers gave a subtle glance, and the bodyguards promptly stepped forward and escorted Shirley Wentworth out.

Once the room was finally quiet, Easton Rivers stepped forward and asked with a slight bow, "Master Sterling, do you think Shirley Wentworth was the one who arranged for that man and child to appear?"

"You saw her display of ’intelligence.’ She’s just trying to be clever," Jett Sterling scoffed. "We still haven’t found the person who arranged for that father and son to show up. That proves how well-hidden they are. It couldn’t have been Shirley."

"It seems there’s someone behind the scenes who knows everything. They’re either trying to hurt Mrs. Sterling or using her to attack you. After all, this incident has an impact on your reputation."

Jett Sterling slowly opened his eyes. "It’s been years since Aethelgard has seen this much excitement. And it’s been years since someone dared to cross me like this from the shadows. Interesting..."

...

Shirley Wentworth had never been so humiliated in her entire life. In that moment, her hatred for Vivian burned even more intensely.

She took a deep breath, pulled out her phone, and made a call.

"Shirley." Wendy Reeves answered the phone quickly. "Is Elle being a good boy?"

Shirley Wentworth’s voice was gentle and polite. "Auntie, Elle is doing very well. He just misses you a lot."

"I miss my dear grandson, too! I haven’t seen him in days."

"In that case, how about I bring him to have lunch with you?"

"Oh, that would be wonderful!" Wendy Reeves said excitedly. "Come to my house. I’ll cook something delicious for him myself."

"Auntie, you shouldn’t overexert yourself. Just let the staff handle the cooking. You can spend more time playing with Elle."

"Fine, fine, anything’s fine! As long as I get to see my precious grandson, I’ll do whatever it takes!" Wendy Reeves couldn’t hide her delight. "I’ll start getting ready now. You bring Elle over in a bit."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Shirley Wentworth immediately returned to the Wentworth residence to pick up Elle, then rushed over to Wendy Reeves’s villa.

Throughout the drive, Elle was sullen, sitting silently in his car seat.

"Elle, you can’t be pouting like that when you see your grandmother," Shirley Wentworth couldn’t help but say. "You need to be sweet, greet her properly, and interact with her. Do you hear me?"

Elle pouted. "I want to see Vivian."

A sudden fire ignited within Shirley Wentworth. She snapped angrily, "Eleven Sterling, how many times has Mommy told you? You can’t keep thinking about Vivian!"

Elle turned his head and glared at her, his cheeks puffed out in anger.

That made Shirley even angrier. "Why are you glaring at Mommy? Who taught you to look at me like that? Was it Vivian?"

Like a little lion cub with its fur on end, Elle retorted, "Vivian is the kindest person ever! She’s not mean like Mommy!"

"Shut your mouth!" Shirley was so furious she saw spots. "If you dare defend Vivian again, I swear Mommy will hit you!"

She adored her child. No matter how angry she got, she had never once hit him.

This only made Elle even angrier, and his gaze turned icy. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Seeing that face, a spitting image of Jett Sterling’s, half of Shirley’s anger instantly vanished.

No one knew how deeply she loved Jett Sterling. She loved him to the point of madness, so much so that the mere thought of having borne his child was enough to make her happy.

"Elle, I’m sorry." Shirley reached out to stroke his head, but he proudly dodged her touch.

Shirley said helplessly, "Mommy already apologized. I shouldn’t have been so mean to you."

"I don’t accept it," Elle said, still sulking. "I don’t want to talk to Mommy right now!"

"Fine, Mommy won’t force you. But you must greet your grandmother when you see her. Be polite."

Elle didn’t say anything, but when he saw Wendy Reeves, he did greet her.

Wendy Reeves quickly noticed Elle was in low spirits and asked with a pang of concern, "What’s wrong, my dear grandson? Who made you angry?"

Shirley quickly interjected, "It’s because of the banquet the other night. All that drama must have had an effect on him."

Wendy Reeves’s expression turned cold in an instant. "That Vivian Quinn is a jinx! I should have fought tooth and nail to make Jett divorce her from the start! First, at Ian Sterling’s birthday party, it’s revealed that she’d had a child. Then, at the banquet to introduce my own grandson, it gets even worse—a man and a child show up right at our door! Isn’t that just parading in front of everyone that she cheated on Jett? When has our Jett ever suffered such humiliation? Vivian Quinn deserves to die!"
