Wedding Night: My Disabled Husband Made Me Cry-Chapter 159: Give Up the Position of Mrs. Sterling
Jett Sterling put down his chopsticks and pulled her into an embrace. "Vivian, you still donβt understand." π³ππππππππ πππ.π°π π¦
Vivianβs voice was almost a plea. "Compared to Elleβs life, nothing else is important. Jett, promise me we wonβt give up on him, okay?"
Jett couldnβt bear to see her like this. He closed his eyes for a long moment before finally giving in. "Alright. I promise you."
Vivian hugged him tightly. "I knew it. I knew my husband wasnβt a cold-hearted person."
Jett stroked her hair. "Letβs eat. You need to be full to have the strength to take care of someone."
"Okay." Vivian let go of him and went back to eating her noodles. "With Elle in this condition, Shirley Wentworth will definitely want to stay with him."
"No." Jettβs expression turned cold in an instant. "Vivian Quinn, youβre being far too magnanimous. You want to keep Elle here, and you want to let Shirley stay too? Are you out of your mind? Do you plan on living with them?"
"I never said I wanted to live with them," Vivian explained. "I thought Shirleyβs previous suggestion was very reasonable. They could stay in Aethelgard, and Elle could come live with you for a set period each month. That way, he could feel a fatherβs love. I just donβt understand why you wouldnβt agree."
"I have my own plans. You donβt need to worry about it."
"But things are different now. Weβve already decided to have Elle stay, so we have to solve the other problem. Elle is unwell right now. You canβt just keep the son and send the mother away, stripping her of her right to see him, can you?"
For once, Jettβs face was cold toward her. "Vivian Quinn, even kindness has its limits. If you keep giving in, youβll find itβs easier to invite a guest than to ask them to leave. Besides, once everyone knows Shirley and I have a child together, the Wentworth and Sterling families will pressure you to divorce me. Theyβll want you to give up the position of Mrs. Sterling to Shirley. How would you handle that?"
Vivian was taken aback. "Would that really happen?"
"What do you think?" Jett explained, "Our two families may be old rivals, but the feud is from decades ago. Itβs been slowly fading over time. For our generation, weβre not really mortal enemies."
"Plus, Aethelgard has been changing rapidly these past few years, and the Wentworth Family is already under pressure from other corporations. If we could turn our rivalry into an alliance, many people in both families would be happy to do it. Elle would be the perfect bridge and a great excuse. Vivian, I wonβt leave you, but you will undoubtedly be under a lot of pressure. Do you understand?"
"I hadnβt thought about all that. I donβt know the specifics of the situation between your families. I just feel that a sick child shouldnβt be separated from his mother."
Jett sighed. "Iβll compromise. Elle can stay here until his condition stabilizes, and Shirley can visit. But she absolutely cannot spend the night at Sycamore Bay. Thatβs my bottom line."
Vivian nodded. "It would certainly look bad if word got out. Iβll go discuss it with Shirley."
"Okay."
Vivian hadnβt expected Shirley to be so reasonable about this; she agreed immediately. "As long as itβs for Elleβs sake, Iβll do whatever it takes. Miss Quinn, Iβm entrusting Elle to you."
Vivianβs lips curved into a small smile. "Miss Wentworth, youβre a good mother."
Shirleyβs voice choked with emotion. "Miss Quinn, youβve never been a mother. If you had, youβd know. Iβd do more than just this... Iβd willingly give my life for Elle."
Vivian nodded. "I know. Donβt worry, Iβll do everything I can. Of course, you can also contact doctors to see Elle yourself. We can both work on it without getting in each otherβs way."
"Thatβs what I was thinking, too. Itβs not that I donβt trust you; itβs just that Elle is too important to me. I canβt give up on any opportunity."
"I understand."
Shirley kept her promise, leaving that night after Elle had fallen asleep.
Vivian was still worried, so she stayed by his bedside.
Wendy Reeves opened the door and came in, saying coolly, "You should go rest. I can stay here with Elle."
"Thatβs alright. Heβs sleeping soundly for now, but I donβt know when heβll wake up. Iβll feel more at ease if I stay here."
Wendy Reeves frowned. "Jett told you to go rest. He knows youβre worried about Elle, so he said you should get some sleep and have a maid watch over him. If anything happens, sheβll call you."
Only then did Vivian stand up. "Alright, then Iβll head back to my room."
When she returned to the master bedroom, Jett wasnβt there.
Vivian didnβt go looking for him. She went straight into the bathroom for a hot bath. By the time she came out, Jett was already lying in bed.
Vivian lay down beside him and asked softly, "What are you thinking about?"
The man gathered his thoughts. "Nothing."
"Nonsense." Vivian wrapped her arms around his neck. "Youβre thinking about Elle, arenβt you?"
"I suppose so."
Vivian held him tightly, not knowing how to comfort him. There was no way to comfort him, because she was just as worried as he was.
"Letβs sleep. Iβve scheduled a meeting with the doctors to discuss Elleβs condition tomorrow."
"Okay." Jett cupped her face and kissed her on the lips. "Good night."
"Good night."
...
γThe next morning.γ
When Vivian came downstairs, she saw that Elle was already awake. Shirley was in the dining room, feeding him breakfast.
"Good morning, Miss Wentworth."
"Good morning."
"Morning, Vivian," Elle greeted in his soft, childish voice.
"Morning, Elle." Vivian went over and took his pulse. "Not bad. Much better than yesterday."
"Vivian, I ate a lot of food! Iβm going to be very healthy!"
Shirley chuckled. "He barely ate anything yesterday, so he must have been really hungry. He just ate quite a bit."
"Thatβs a good thing."
"Miss Quinn, I was worried about Elle, so I came a little early. I hope I didnβt disturb you."
"Not at all, youβre not disturbing us."
Jett Sterling wheeled himself in. "Vivian, sit down and eat."
"Okay."
The two of them sat down to eat. Jett placed some food on Vivianβs plate. "Eat more."
"Okay. You eat too."
Shirley watched them and smiled faintly. "I never knew Jett could be so caring."
Vivian felt a little embarrassed. "Sorry to make a scene."
"Not at all. Iβm honored to witness this. Itβs a side of him Iβve never seen before."
Jett placed a shrimp dumpling on Vivianβs plate. "Just eat. No idle chatter."
Shirley: "..."
Vivian shot Jett a look, a silent reminder in her eyes.
Jettβs lips curved into a faint smile, but he said nothing.
Watching the silent exchange between them, Shirley felt even more awkward.
Fortunately, Wendy Reeves walked in just then. "Is my sweet little grandson eating? Such a good boy!"
"Morning, Grandma," Elle greeted her. "Hurry and eat."
"Okay." Wendy Reeves sat down beside him, her gaze glued to him, unable to look away.
Before breakfast was over, Nanny Jenner came in to report, "Young Madam, the doctors are here. They said you had an appointment with them."
"Yes." Vivian put down her chopsticks. "Please show them to the side hall."
"Yes, Maβam."
"Are they here to discuss Elleβs condition?" Shirley asked. "May I listen in?"
