Chapter 152: Chapter 152: I’ll Give You Two Choices

"I’m speaking the truth," Jett Sterling said, enunciating each word. "You’re a Wentworth. I see right through your little tricks. There’s no need to pretend to be virtuous."

Shirley Wentworth’s face was ashen. The hand holding her glass trembled slightly, unable to hide her fury.

As the tense atmosphere hung in the air, there was a sudden knock on the private room’s door. A waiter entered to serve the food.

Shirley immediately regained her composure, a gentle smile gracing her face as if nothing had happened.

After the waiter finished serving, Shirley instructed, "You may leave. I’ll call you if I need anything."

"Of course. Please enjoy your meal."

Once the waiter had left, Shirley’s expression turned cold. "Jett," she began, "you’ve been like this since we were children. Cold-blooded, heartless, and always twisting people’s intentions."

"It’s true that I’m a Wentworth, and I know our families share an irreconcilable feud. But that has nothing to do with you and me. I, Shirley Wentworth, can say with a clear conscience that I have never done anything to wrong you!"

Jett Sterling’s lips curved into a faint smile that didn’t reach his eyes, which remained utterly indifferent. "First of all, given your personality, you would never have risked giving birth to a child without knowing who the father was. Therefore, you knew he was my son from the very beginning."

"Secondly, you know me very well. After that night, I never looked for you, which proved I didn’t know it was you. You were well aware of this. So you secretly gave birth to my child without my knowledge. And now you have the nerve to say you’ve done nothing to wrong me?"

Shirley felt as if she had been stripped bare, all her thoughts and schemes exposed under the harsh sunlight with nowhere to hide.

She closed her eyes, suppressing the pain in them, and spoke with difficulty. "Jett, I know I can’t hide anything from you. I admit I was selfish. I considered getting an abortion, but the doctor said my body couldn’t handle it. If I had, there was a high chance I would have become infertile for life. I couldn’t take that gamble."

Jett Sterling leaned back in his chair. "It’s best that you admit it. I hate being lied to more than anything. Since this child was brought into the world through deceit, I cannot accept him. I’ll give you two choices. First, the child stays with me, but you must promise to never see him again and never let anyone know he’s your son."

"Second, you take the child and leave. I’ll give you a sum for child support, but you must both disappear from my life forever."

"Jett, you’re too cruel!" Shirley said in disbelief. "That child is my everything. I could never give him to you. And I didn’t bring him back to ask you for child support!"

"So you just want him to have the fatherly love he’s been missing?"

"That’s right. As I said, the child is my everything. I’ll do anything that’s good for him," Shirley said with firm conviction. "Don’t worry. As soon as Elle’s condition improves, I’ll take him and leave immediately. I will absolutely not disturb the happy life the two of you share!"

Vivian Quinn: "..." ’Why am I getting dragged into this for no reason?’

Jett mulled it over for a moment before speaking. "I can agree to your terms. Elle can stay at Sycamore Bay for half a month. I hope that after half a month, you’ll be true to your word and never appear again."

Shirley’s lips tightened. "Fine."

No one touched their chopsticks during lunch. It ended on a sour note.

Once they were in the car, Vivian Quinn was finally able to speak. "Actually, I kind of understand Shirley. If an abortion meant I could never have children, I probably would have chosen to keep the baby too."

Jett Sterling smiled and stroked her cheek. "Vivian, don’t believe everything people tell you."

Vivian Quinn: "..."

"What do you mean? Are you saying Shirley is lying to me?"

"You were raised in different environments—in fact, they were complete opposites. Even if she wanted to be as pure as you, she couldn’t. She’s a Wentworth. So, Vivian, you have to remember that no one from a wealthy, powerful family is ever simple."

"Take today, for instance. Did you really think we ran into Shirley by chance? She just got anxious because I was taking too long to find her, so she decided to show up on her own."

It dawned on Vivian. "Jett Sterling, you have really high emotional intelligence."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because someone with high emotional intelligence would call me pure. Someone with low emotional intelligence would call me stupid."

Jett Sterling: "..."

"Mrs. Sterling is very self-aware."

Vivian Quinn doubled over with laughter. "So you really do think I’m stupid!"

"You’re the one who admitted it first."

After laughing and teasing each other for a bit, Vivian returned to the serious topic. "Are you really not going to keep Elle?"

"Vivian, we’ll have our own children," Jett Sterling said. "Don’t let this child’s appearance change anything between us."

"I’m not saying that. I just think your mother will never agree. She’s been going crazy waiting for a grandchild. Now that she finally has one, how could she possibly let him go so easily?"

Jett felt a headache coming on. "I’ll work on her. In any case, this matter is not up for discussion."

Vivian didn’t know what to say. She felt conflicted about Elle. She liked the boy, but she wasn’t a saint. Every time she saw him, she was reminded that he was Jett’s child with another woman, and it always left a knot in her stomach. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Besides, whether Elle stayed or left was not her decision to make.

When the two of them returned to Sycamore Bay, Elle came running over, his little legs huffing and puffing, and threw his arms around Vivian’s leg. "Vivian, what took you so long? I was bored to death!"

Vivian Quinn: "..."

She smiled and picked him up. "You’re at the most carefree age. I’m so envious of you."

Elle’s eyes lit up. "Does that mean you admire me?"

"...I guess so."

"That’s great! Admiration is the foundation of love. You’ll fall in love with me soon!"

Vivian Quinn: "..."

"Where did you learn to say things like that?"

"I learned it just now watching TV with Grandma."

"..."

"Get down," Jett Sterling said coolly, looking at Elle in Vivian’s arms. "I’ve spoken with your mother. You can only stay here for half a month."

Elle’s mouth fell open. "Daddy, you found my mommy so fast? You’re amazing!"

"What did you say?" Wendy Reeves came down from the second floor, rushing forward to ask, "Jett, you found Elle’s mother? Who is she?"

"Shirley Wentworth."

"...Shirley from the Wentworth Family?"

"Yes."

"How could it be her..." Wendy Reeves was utterly shocked, but she quickly recovered. "What did you just say? You’re sending Elle away? On what grounds? So what if Shirley Wentworth gave birth to him? The boy belongs to our Sterling Family. He must stay here!"

"I have no intention of keeping him here," Jett Sterling announced. "In half a month, he has to leave, and he is never to appear before me again."

Vivian Quinn quickly covered Elle’s ears. "I’ll take you to play."

Wendy Reeves was furious. "Look at you! Even Vivian knows not to say such things in front of a child. But you? You’re pushing him away directly. Is that any way for a father to act?"

"I never intended to be his father in the first place," Jett said grimly. "You see a grandson, but you don’t see the entanglement between the Sterling and Wentworth families behind it all. I’ve already lost the upper hand in this matter. I refuse to be manipulated further because of a child."

Wendy was at a loss for words but still tried to argue. "Jett, Mom knows you hate being deceived more than anything. But he’s your own flesh and blood, after all. You’re not getting any younger. And even though you’re married, it doesn’t look like Vivian is in any hurry to have a child with you. Why don’t we take this opportunity to reconcile with the Wentworth Family? You and Shirley could be together for the child’s sake. Wouldn’t that be a perfect, happy ending?"
