Wedding Night: My Disabled Husband Made Me Cry-Chapter 138: I Can Protect Her
"We never had a relationship to begin with, so there’s nothing to sever," Vivian Quinn said with a cold laugh. "Forget ten million. I wouldn’t give you a single penny!"
Anger flashed in Holly Jenner’s eyes as she plopped right back onto the ground to continue her tantrum. "Everyone, come and be the judge! My own daughter says she won’t even give me a penny! What an ungrateful brat!"
The crowd of onlookers immediately began to point fingers at Vivian Quinn.
"She really is an ungrateful monster! Look at her clothes. She’s clearly not poor. How could she treat her own mother so cruelly? It’s outrageous!"
"Exactly! Someone like her is just a waste of air!"
"There really should be a law against parental abandonment. People like her should be thrown in jail to rot for the rest of their lives!"
"..."
In the upstairs lounge, Easton Rivers knocked before entering. He looked toward the man resting with his eyes closed on the sofa. "Master Sterling, Holly Jenner is inciting the crowd downstairs and making things difficult for Madam. Do you need me to intervene?"
Without opening his eyes, the man said flatly, "Do you think she can’t even handle a low-life like that?"
"...I thought you would step in to help Madam."
"I’ll help when it’s necessary, but that doesn’t mean I should help with everything. I can protect her, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t need to grow and be tempered by experience."
"I understand," Easton Rivers said with a nod. "I’ll go check on the situation and report back with any updates."
Just as Easton Rivers was about to leave, his phone suddenly rang.
He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. "Master Sterling, it’s Madam calling!"
"Answer it."
Easton Rivers quickly answered the call. "Madam?"
Holly Jenner’s wails could be heard from the other end of the line, but in stark contrast, Vivian Quinn’s voice was like a clear stream. "Easton, contact a lawyer for me. I’m suing Ms. Holly Jenner for slander and extortion."
Holly Jenner’s crying stopped abruptly. She snarled, "Vivian Quinn, don’t you dare talk nonsense! When have I ever slandered or extorted you?!"
"You are my adoptive mother, not my birth mother. You abused me as a child, remarried when I was very young, and you never raised me." The young woman’s voice was calm and steady, filled with an indescribable power. "Your biological daughter is currently in the ICU and needs a bone marrow transplant to live. You didn’t come here for tissue typing to save her; you came for the money. You would have gotten a million if you were a match!"
The crowd fell silent, staring at the two of them in disbelief.
Vivian Quinn continued, her every word ringing with conviction, "The tissue typing failed, so you couldn’t donate your bone marrow for even more money. That’s when you set your sights on me. You demanded I take care of your younger daughter, and when I refused, you started inciting this crowd to condemn me. And just moments ago, you tried to extort ten million from me!"
The onlookers, who had been filled with righteous indignation, were now enraged.
"This liar was playing the victim to fool us! How disgusting!"
"I knew she was no good from the start!"
"What kind of mother abuses one child and completely neglects her own flesh and blood?!"
"She’s completely obsessed with money. It’s sickening..."
"Miss, you should call the police! Someone like her belongs in prison!"
A small smile played on Vivian Quinn’s lips. "If I call the police, I’ll have to give a statement. I have no intention of wasting my time on her. Easton, did you hear me? Contact the lawyer."
"Yes, Madam," Easton Rivers replied quickly. "I’ll get on it right away."
"Vivian Quinn!" Holly Jenner panicked. "You’re really going to sue me? Did you forget what I said earlier?"
"What was that?" Vivian Quinn tapped her phone. "I recorded everything you just said—all your threats and extortion. When this goes to court, it will be direct evidence."
"I couldn’t choose my past, so I don’t care if everyone knows how wretched it was. You have no power over me. In fact, since you think I’m so rich? I’ll use that money to sue you until you rot in prison for the rest of your life!"
Holly Jenner’s face went white. She scrambled to beg, "Vivian, Mommy was wrong. Please, can you forgive Mommy just this once? I’ll never dare to do it again!"
"It’s far too late for regrets. I have no reason to be lenient with someone as consumed by greed as you."
"Vivian, you can’t be this cruel! At the very least, I did raise you for a time!"
A cold glint flashed in Vivian Quinn’s eyes. "Like I said, you abused me relentlessly. I’m not some saint who repays cruelty with kindness. Just wait for your prison cell!" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
"Good for you!" an onlooker called out. "People like her belong in prison!"
"That’s right! Miss, we support you!"
Holly Jenner’s face was white as a sheet. She wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole!
Vivian Quinn paid her no more mind and simply turned and walked away.
That evening, Easton Rivers came to report. "Madam, Holly Jenner has fled. She didn’t even take the one million she was offered. She took her daughter and disappeared overnight."
Vivian Quinn was speechless.
"Madam, shall I arrange for someone to track them down?"
"That won’t be necessary," Vivian Quinn said calmly. "I never intended to waste my time or energy on people like her. Since we haven’t lost anything, there’s no need to chase after them. Just let them go."
"Yes, Madam."
"Easton, is there any news from the prison? When can that person be tested for a match with Joy?"
"Please don’t worry, Madam. It’s all been arranged. It’s difficult to get the person out, so we’ve arranged for a sample to be collected at the prison and sent here for tissue typing. If it’s a match, Master Sterling will find a way to have them released for the surgery."
"Okay." Vivian Quinn paused for a moment before adding, "Please thank Jett Sterling for me. And tell him he doesn’t need to keep watch here every day. I can stay with Joy by myself."
"Madam, Master Sterling isn’t watching over Miss Chase," Easton Rivers said, mustering his courage. "He’s watching over you."
Vivian Quinn said nothing.
Easton Rivers quickly apologized. "I’m sorry, Madam. I overstepped."
"It’s fine. You should get some rest. I’m going to bed as well."
"Please have the bird’s nest soup first."
"Alright."
Vivian Quinn drank the bird’s nest soup and quickly grew drowsy. She lay down on the bed and closed her eyes.
She vaguely heard a door open and close. Soon, Vivian Quinn felt someone pulling the covers over her. The next moment, that person took her hand.
The feeling was so familiar that Vivian Quinn knew who it was without a second thought.
She wanted desperately to open her eyes, but her eyelids were incredibly heavy. Her consciousness slowly faded, and she drifted off to sleep.
...
The sample from the prison was collected quickly and sent to the hospital for tissue typing.
Vivian Quinn paced back and forth, her anxiety palpable.
’Neither Joy Chase’s birth mother nor her paternal half-sister were able to donate bone marrow. This was, arguably, her last chance. If this match also failed, her odds of survival would be slim to none!’
’Joy Chase had suffered so much, endured so much pain. If she could, she would even trade her own life for Joy’s!’
"Madam, please try not to be so anxious. Sit down and have some water," Nanny Jenner said, her heart aching for her.
"I’m not thirsty, and I can’t possibly sit still." Vivian Quinn nervously twisted the hem of her shirt. "I don’t know what else I can do for Joy."
"Madam, you’ve already done more than enough for her. You love her more than anyone else in the world."
Suddenly, the door to the room was thrown open
