Way of Overlord-Chapter 604: Betting
This alone shows how much influence the Brolgadhr tribe and Aeryon possesses on the Southern Great Steppe
Before, even the strongest tribe on the north, Vihur tribe would not give so much pressure with only a letter
This is because Aeryon power felt pervasive even more so than other large tribes in the Southern Great Steppe.
And when he punished those disobedient, he would use all of his strength to decimate such people
Sometimes one might wonder why waste so many resources just to stamp out disloyalty.
This is the reason.
The reputation is there, and it is easier to cow people into submission.
Just a letter makes Karnain sweats on the forehead.
Karnain then smiles
"He is not suspicious to those people under him"
He sighed and then chuckles bitterly
"I am not under him. So, he is suspicious. He did not want to control me but he did not want me to get out from the plan that he had concocted. Then the only thing I could.....is be honest"
"It is the best way for me and him right now. If I could not be "honest" then he could not trust me. Once such feelings infest his heart, then it is my head at stake"
Karnain knew the stake.
No matter how magnanimous Aeryon is, could he be so magnanimous to trust his rear to someone he could not trust
So, even if he did not have any scheme, he must pretend to have a scheme. Sometimes, by being a villain you could trust such person even more
Of course, this time, Aeryon is not accusing the wrong person.
Karnain really does have ambition, and he really have a scheme
It is just that he never had the opportunity to use his scheme.
And by now, he could not use most of these scheme
The scheme he had thought of now would be the chip he could use to make sure that the Khan could at least trust him a little
"It is not pleasant....being the fish on the chopping block" he thought to himself. But he could only sigh at this.
He grinds the ink and then uses the reed pen and he began writing.
Karnain then reveals his ambition.
He wrote how he also wanted to vie for the world but knows that he did not have the capabilities and strength to turns the tide.
He also noted a few methods of how he could use this position to threaten but also outline why he could not use it. He did not pour out all of his heart and all of the truth. He doesn’t need to. What Aeryon wanted is some handle
Aeryon would not just believe him. He just needed a reason to believe.
And Karnain must give him that
His attitude would determine Aeryon attitude. That young wolf does not only know how to hunt, he also knows to wait
And he is young
So, he could always afford to wait.
He now wanted to make sure that he could bear the banner of Kazan and make sure this tribe survives.
This is a gamble.
He betted that the Khan would rather listen to honest words than false mollification.
Different people have different ways to please them.
From what he knows of Aeryon this young chief is very heroic. He is not only heroic, but also frank with his men
And he did not punish those who speak the truth to him.
If he is timid now, and keep offering false words, instead of decreasing Aeryon vigilance of him, that young chief probably would not look down on him but instead he would become even more cautious of him.
The fact that he had sent a letter to him, shows in Aeryon mind, that he is someone that he needed to worry about
Karnain is different from other people. Because he is the most political savvy of all of the people Aeryon had met.
One thing is clear; he needs to lay low and bide his time and make sure that Aeryon did not see him as enemies
Maybe one night he would not even know how he lost his head
He bet....and he hope that he bets right
..
The war between the Brolgadhr and the Cha Ner Ul Alliance has started and by now, almost two weeks had passed.
By now, all the chiefs in the Southern great Steppe had learned about it even those far northern tribes.
On one side is Brolgadhr tribe, a tribe that has been forged by blood and steel.
A kingdom of Marynku led by Khan Aeryon.
From the moment he had risen he had never lost a battle and never lost a war.
The momentum seems unstoppable, tens of thousands of horses ride toward the west, the drums echoes so loudly that three settlements could hear it from afar, the dust kick up by the horses rose toward the sky and from afar it looks like the storms are coming
And on the other side, the alliance of three great tribes, the Chagai, Nergui and Ultar tribes.
These three tribes are all tribes that could trace their existence and lineage to the old empires
In some parts of the Steppe, it is hard to trace one lineage but in the Southern Great Steppe, because of the condition and region they inhabited, almost all of them have great history and could trace themselves back to the era of those forgotten gods and heroes.
Nergui and Ultar has always been at each other, and no one could really tell who started the feud and why the feud begins.
Each one has their own version of what really happened.
But Chagai tribes, this seemingly small tribe manage to unite these two tribes and made them all sit on the same table and created one of the strongest alliance this Southern Great Steppe has ever seen since the time of the Xun dynasty.
The forces they command is also formidable. One hundred thousand men, lining up the entire eastern border of these three tribes like an unbreakable shield.
Everyone is waiting to see what would happen.
Will Aeryon break the wall and ride his horse to the west?
Or will the three tribes hold the wall and split the Southern Great Steppe into two, creating the situation of Western and Eastern regime?
And all the tribes on the north is also moving and making their moves
One thing is clear to everyone. When this war is over, win or lose, the situation of the world would change again
The storms in the Steppe will keep raging!
...
The West of the Southern Great Steppe has always produced heroes.
These has been acknowledged by every part of the region of the Steppe
But these heroes are usually those who fought against invaders from the west
The western tribes of the Southern great Steppe usually fought against the Western Zhou forces.
Those in the Western Great Steppe on the other hand fought against the mountain tribes.
While those western tribes on the Northern Great Steppe fought the river people and the Romans
They were united by a cause of honour. Honour and a burden of a thousand year obligation.
And because of this honour and because of these burden, these western border tribes were not attacked by any other tribes from other regions.
They are the protector of the western border of the Steppe.
In the thousand years this oath been upheld, the western region has rarely been breached.
And if it is breached, the western border tribes would unite to throws these inavders back out with no regards of throwing their life out for the cause.
In the fireplace of the tribe, in the hearth of a tent, the stories of heroes and gods and demons are told.
And there is always a place for the story of heroes of the west.
Honourable and a stalwart protector`. Willing to sacrifice their life for the Great Steppe.
However, that is true if you only listen to one side of the story. Are they really willing or are they forced to this life?
But what happens when they don’t want to fight?
Then the immunity they have is forfeited.
And while the tribes of other regions did not attack them, that did not mean that immunity is extended to the other tribes that also resides on the western part of their Steppe.
Hence, why Khagai tribe in the southern Great Steppe could fight against the Bolghar, annexes their region, kill Bolghar people and is not punished by the collective power of the western border tribes
Because it is allowed.
It is permitted.
It is why Bolghar tribe could supress the Khagai.
They are the most adept at using political play in gaining their power.
That is because they could not expand, they could only fight among themselves and the other tribes in the centre, in the north, in the east does not have to worry about them
And it is the way how the western border tribes find a loophole in the ancestral rule of the Steppe.
They are not all honourable. Not everyone sees it as an honour. It is a burden.
A shackle that put them in place.
Whoever constructed this system, has created an impenetrable western border.
But while the other parts of the region could become overlord, the western border tribes could not ever progress because of these shackles.
All order is always thought to last forever.
Every empire, every ruler believe that their rule and their order would always last.
But there is nothing that last forever and the human heart is the most changeable thing of all
All it needed was a wind of change
And in the Southern Great Steppe, the wind of change did not only blew, it turns into a storm.
And only those who have great courage to ride into the storm and stand in the centre could survive it
..
