Way of Overlord-Chapter 602: Testing
In the Steppe alone, tribes would hold on to blood debt sometimes even until each of the tribe dies.
The people of Yan did not understand this and hence they did not understand why some tribes would never surrender to them regardless of what they offered
Yan people are profit oriented people.
They believe everything revolves around profit.
And that is not entirely wrong.
Profit and interest bind many people.
But not everyone.
Sometimes, some people did not do thing just because it is in his interest and just because it is profitable.
There are people who transcend all that and there are some people who scoffed at it
Some people just wanted to be worthy of their hearts.
In other words, the Yan people learn to compromise. The more you compromise, the more you extinguish bravery.
The past events haunted Yan and sow these seeds of contention between the people of other races and people of Yan.
When Huo Qubing come to the grassland and kills so many children of the Steppe, could he not have thought that past events would affect future events?
Some people always like to attribute certain events to a matter of immediate scenario. But some things have been set into motion a long time ago
To the people of the Steppe, if you kills warriors and kills those who attacked you, that is nothing more than war.
War is like that.
If you are ready to kill people, then you should also accept that you could also be killed. You should not cry foil when that happens
Who started it first?
Who knows?
It is lost in the annals of history. But since then, when the Steppe people raid south, they would be merciless
Is the Steppe people itself some kind of benevolent people?
No, that is not the case either.
When there is dispute between two tribes, there is cases where one chief would wipe out every single men of that tribe and raped all the woman.
But this is of rare occurrence.
The reason it felt numerous that each time it happened, it would be popularized. Not so that one could admire it but so that one could hate such a person
Then what about Yan?
Are all of them evil?
No.
There are farmers in Yan who knows nothing about the killing of the soldiers of Yan.
Huo Qubing on the other hand follows the order of the Emperor and kills the Steppe people because he believes that the Steppe people is evil and they raided Yan every year.
Is it his fault?
Is it the world fault?
Or is it the times?
One thing is clear however
Every action you make, have consequences. Some consequence come early. And some consequences come later
Karnain sighed and then he walks back to his table and sit back down
"The Khan on the East and the Khan on the west both of them.....are dangerous. It is like dancing on the edge of a blade" he sighed.
He then comes closer to his table and look at the letter, in Marynku letters.
There is a letter for him, and it is from the Khan. He did not open it and he wanted to be ready before he opens it.
His heart is not as good as the past. The past battle he had led since he occupied Kazan region also put a strain in his heart.
If this is some kind of outrageous letter and it made his heart unsettled, it could affect the general situation, so he needs to prepare his heart and his mind before opening it.
Karnain sighed even before he opens the letter. He opens it and reads it.
And then he sighed. Then he nodded. Then he sighed again
"He knows and now he wants to make a deal"
"Hmm"
"Should I pretend or should I show my ambition?" Karnain mutters to himself. The letter already said Aeryon knows there is his spies in his tribe from him
The words in the letter is very casual. But who really knows the heart of a person like this?
He expected the Khan to be angry.
But he is not.
Instead, he makes a deal with him.
In other words, he appears magnanimous. Appearing understanding of why he sent the spies.
He did not mention trying to blackmail him.
He did not mention of punishing him
Instead, the more he is like this, the more uncomfortable the other side is.
This young Khan has always done something he did not expect.
His demeanour is unlike the people of the Steppe.
To many, even though they knew that the benefits outweigh emotion, they could not discard face and reputation that easily
After all, this is prestige and prestige, and reputation means something in the Steppe.
But this young Khan is very flexible. But also complicated.
And to be honest, Aeryon reputation is still there. This matter is only known to the two of them, known only to heaven and earth.
Even if this got out, Aeryon would win another reputation of being magnanimous even to a chief under his shelter.
So, to say reputation means nothing to the Khan is erroneous. If Dama choose the way of discarding the reputation, Aeryon choose to use reputation.
Sometimes, he could throw away benefit away to pursue what he thought is right and sometimes, he could throw away reputation and prestige for benefit.
It made his enemies guessing and no one knows his true face.
The easier you are to figure out, the easier people become around you
Because a person who cares about benefit, is easily tempted with profit.
Those who cares about reputation is shackled by that same reputation.
Each one could be used and every person whether they wanted to use such person or befriend such person, they have approach that they could use.
Be righteous in front of the righteous, be greedy in front of the greedy. And you could easily ingratiate yourself with such people.
Aeryon, however, look at something and deny their worth and look at something ruthless and give it value.
If there is one-way Karnain would describe Aeryon, he would describe him as someone that is incompatible with this era.
Compared to the other rulers in the Steppe, he is quite compassionate toward his people. Even though there is still great punishment, most of these punishments falls onto enemies and the most heinous among them
He also did not care much about certain etiquette yet at others time he would held up things that is useless in the eyes of the chiefs
Like the common people. He is not the kind of benevolent lord in Yan, but he is also not exactly a cruel ruler.
An enigma.
A person that seems incompatible with this era.
Yet, his strength makes all of his action seems natural
And that is why Karnain is hesitant right now. It seems the Khan wanted to make a deal with him.
Is he sincere?
Or is the Khan testing him?
Sordkazan is not a vassal of the Brolgadhr.
But to others, they are.
After all, the current region that they are entrenched in is the region of Kazan. But they occupied it under the protection of the Brolgadhr.
Even though there is no formal agreement of ruler and subordinate between the two tribes, the rest of the Southern Great Steppe see it as Sordkazan resting under the umbrella of Brolgadhr
To the eyes of the other tribes, it would only be a matter of time until the Sordkazan tribe would rest under the umbrella of the Brolgadhr tribe
Even Karnain himself is getting pessimistic of his chance. But there is something he must fought for
There is a difference between being a part of the tribe and being under the tribe. To some empire, there is no difference but to the Steppe, there is difference.
There were many tribes that is supporting alongside instead of supporting the up with the down
It is a difference between servants and allies.
The trend of the world is obvious.
And even Karnain, no matter how talented he was and no matter how favourable the condition is right now, he could not turn back the tide alone.
And the other tribes that he could come for help, none of them have the kind of vision and ambition like the current two contenders for the throne of the Southern Great Steppe
Sometimes, he is not worried that his enemies is strong.
He is more worried if his teammate is an idiot teammate that would hinder him
Karnain could think of a few turning points that he could employ.
But each one of them have low chance of victory and even lower chance of succeeding.
Karnain is no longer young. He might be younger than some of the old chief but compared to those two, he is quite old.
And he has a family to feed and a tribe to protect. He could not be reckless and pursue some slight chance.
And unlike Dama and Aeryon, he doesn’t have a strong foundation to rely on if he failed.
Whether it be Dama or Aeryon, as long as they could keep their foundation a few lost battles here and there would not decimate their entire tribe and would not let them fall into obscurity in one battle.
