Wasteland's Only King-Chapter 48: The Reason
"Why’s Senior Sister Yin here?"
Inpatient ward.
Room 308, outside the door.
Light shook his head as he looked at Yin Yao standing in front of him.
Before Old Yu said those last few sentences, Light thought maybe the doctors had accidentally discovered Old Yu recovering too fast, and wanted to keep him for observation and research.
But in the end...
Just a big misunderstanding.
If it was Yin Yao, then having the director, deputy director, and a bunch of experts packed into the room wasn’t surprising to Light at all.
"Wanted to discuss something with you. Found out at Tianhu Parking Lot that you left for Gunzhou early this morning. I had no plans today, so I just came looking for you."
Yin Yao lowered her gaze, her voice unconsciously quieter.
Honestly, she didn’t want to make such a big fuss either.
But as soon as she arrived at the entrance of Gunzhou People’s Hospital, all these directors and deputies rushed out to greet her.
When the director heard Yin Yao was coming to see a classmate, and said classmate’s foster father happened to be hospitalized, he didn’t hesitate—just brought all the higher-ups straight to the ward.
Once in the room, with a big flourish, he insisted on upgrading the ward to the highest-level VIP suite.
Old Yu stubbornly refused.
The director was eager to please.
That’s how Light ended up getting that phone call.
"Xiaojin?"
Old Yu’s voice called out from inside the ward, interrupting their conversation.
"What’s going on?"
Old Yu seemed a bit dazed, unable to grasp how his good son suddenly had so much influence that the director and deputy directors would show up in person, even offering to push his bed themselves...
And that star-like young woman—someone he’d only ever seen on TV—now chatting and laughing face-to-face with his son.
Even...
It looked vaguely as if the young woman was on the losing end, her demeanor slightly humble.
Light glanced at Yin Yao with her head lowered, then at Old Yu and Cao Fang, both staring intensely at him.
Whoosh—
He let out a breath and simply led Yin Yao into the room.
"Dad, Mom, this is my college senior, Yin Yao."
Since Yin Yao was already here, and upgrading the ward was with good intentions, Light might as well introduce her to his parents.
"Hello, Uncle, Hello, Auntie."
"My name’s Yin Yao, I’m Light’s classmate."
Light was surprised by one thing.
Yin Yao actually took the initiative to introduce herself.
Even—
As she spoke, she deliberately walked up to the bed, lowered her head slightly, showing real respect.
This scene...
Totally stunned the busy director and two deputy directors, who were prepping to push the hospital bed.
The three exchanged glances, reading intense shock in each other’s eyes.
"Ah, ah..."
"Good, good, hello, hello!"
Old Yu never expected the star-like young lady to be so well-mannered and quick to greet, responding right away.
Beside the bed.
Cao Fang looked at Light, then at Yin Yao; her eyes filled with joy and relief, but also a faint shadow of worry.
She hadn’t read much or learned many words, but her eyes saw clearly enough.
This young woman—her status and background looked extremely impressive.
As for their own situation...
Not destitute, sure, but just an ordinary working-class family.
Cao Fang, coming from her era, held deep beliefs about matching social status in marriage.
On the other side.
Light had no idea that just bringing Yin Yao to meet his parents had already triggered Cao Fang’s thoughts about ’mismatched backgrounds, unhappy marriages’ and so on.
He glanced at the director and deputies, still fussing and a bit flustered, and quietly said, "No need to upgrade the ward, this one’s just fine."
Old Yu’s illness had long been cured by Light’s Purifying Light; moving to the VIP room with all the extra tests could actually expose anomalies instead.
"Alright."
Yin Yao nodded lightly.
"You all, please step outside."
No sooner had she finished speaking...
The director, deputies, and all the experts packed in the room carefully and quietly left.
As they left, they even remembered to gently close the door behind them.
This scene shocked Old Yu and Cao Fang once again.
"Unbelievable!"
Old Yu was both stunned and thrilled inside.
He never imagined his son would become so capable, able to win over even someone like Yin Yao—whose background seemed so immense!
Elsewhere.
Cao Fang’s worry grew a shade deeper.
"Sit, sit."
"You’ve come from far, let me wash some fruit for you."
Though Cao Fang felt uneasy, she acted quickly, grabbing two apples from the fruit basket nearby.
Only, as she picked up the apples, her movements slowed for a moment, because she belatedly realized—the fruit basket seemed to have been brought by Yin Yao... 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
...
...
By the ward window.
Light and Yin Yao stood across from each other.
Both held a freshly washed apple in hand.
"Alright, what did you want to talk to me about?"
Light took a bite of his apple.
"Do you have any free time these couple of days?"
Yin Yao fixed her gaze on Light, sounding earnest.
"..."
Light paused mid-bite.
"You’re inviting me again?"
Light’s expression turned odd.
"Ahem—!"
Inside the ward.
Old Yu, just drinking water, suddenly choked.
Cao Fang rushed to pat his back.
"It’s okay, it’s okay!"
"You two chat, you two chat. I didn’t hear a thing!"
Old Yu coughed, but still called out to Light and Yin Yao.
"..."
"..."
After a long pause.
Light spoke up again: "I’m pretty busy these days, lots of things planned."
After all—
Right before Yin Yao arrived, he’d been figuring out how to grind more points and rack up more rewards.
If Yin Yao wanted to invite him to play Wasteland again, or some other activity, he genuinely didn’t have time.
Yin Yao said, "Just a dinner, won’t take much time."
"Dinner?"
Light stared at Yin Yao, seeing a hint of seriousness and gravity on her face.
"With whom?"
"Is it formal?"
Yin Yao answered honestly: "My grandpa."
"Your grandpa?"
Light’s eyebrows shot up.
He’d looked over Yin Yao’s application form and knew exactly who her grandfather was.
Light pondered.
Generally speaking, ordinary folks like him, when invited to something like this, didn’t even have the right to refuse.
But...
He’s basically a Superman now, nearly beyond needing beef.
If he still let others push him around, what kind of Superman would he be?
"Give me a reason."
Light looked into Yin Yao’s eyes, his tone serious.
Yin Yao lifted her head.
Their eyes met.
Yin Yao’s body actually shuddered ever so slightly.
Deep inside, she felt the rare emotion called ’fear’!
In that instant.
Through Light’s eyes, she seemed to see the Tier Nine Dawn City Lord from her previous life, invincible on the Wasteland...
Even.
Yin Yao could feel a pressure, invisible yet intense, like the aura of a High-tier Evolver!
"Gulp—"
Yin Yao swallowed involuntarily.
"Recruitment."
Only after quite a while.
Yin Yao lowered her head, forcing out those two words through clenched teeth.
She didn’t dare look at Light’s eyes again. They made her feel as if a true extraordinary being was standing right in front of her.
Light took another bite of apple: "Explain."
