Wasteland Border Inspector-Chapter 225 - 110: Rainy Season, Sharp Drop in Temperature, Fiery Hearts!
The rain was falling lightly, pitter-pattering as it splashed on the ground, creating delicate water droplets and a soft whispering sound.
People were coming and going in the quarantine zone.
Most were guards swapping shifts and workers clearing accumulated water, rushing back and forth through the rain.
After several sudden downpours, the rainy season belonging to Happiness City, belonging to Stone Province, had finally arrived.
According to records from previous years, this rain would last at least from mid-July to early August, drizzling for half a month.
Once the rainbelt completely left and the weather cleared up again, the bountiful autumn would start to unfold slowly at the tail end of summer.
Night fell, just past seven o’clock.
The high pole lights at the center of the checkpoint lit up on time.
Like a lighthouse, the warm yellow light pierced through the fog, casting a hazy glow on the wet ground.
The air was filled with a fine mist, making the outline of the quarantine nets appear somewhat blurry.
At first glance, the entire scene seemed dreamlike, yet it carried a chill peculiar to the aftermath of rain.
By this time, although the checkpoint hadn’t closed, there were basically no shadows in Quarantine Zone B.
As per routine, scavengers wouldn’t usually return at this time; they had to hurry and reach the checkpoint before it got dark at six at the latest.
After all, the wilderness at night was extremely dangerous; whether mutant beasts or infected bodies, both were more active in the dark. Adding the effect of the rain, rushing blindly was akin to courting disaster.
Only Zones A and D still had sporadic personnel entering, scattered and sparse.
Mostly it was the merchants who went out in the morning or the sentinels tasked with exploring the scope of the Void Mist.
The daytime bustle was gone, and no gunshots could be heard; the entire checkpoint gradually sank into a unique tranquility of a rainy night.
Quarantine Zone B.
Corner of the inspection area.
Cheng Ye had Gourd bring a lounge chair over and leaned against the quarantine net.
At first, he kept his eyes wide open, watching Wang Kang’s actions, fearing the youngster couldn’t manage.
But after observing for a while, he found that though Wang Kang’s actions were still a bit unpolished, they were orderly.
Inspections, inquiries, guidance, all were carried out in a manner quite like when he first started duty.
Plus, the flow of people in Zone B dwindled so much that over ten minutes passed without a soul in sight.
Cheng Ye relaxed completely, comfortably leaning back on the lounge chair, squinting his eyes for a nap.
He fell asleep with the last bit of dim light hanging on the horizon, and the rain threads fell like silver lines in the dusk.
When he awoke, it was completely dark all around.
The rain had mostly stopped, leaving only the occasional drops along the eaves, corners of walls, and the quarantine net.
The warm yellow light became a misty blur in the fog, barely enabling him to see the checkpoint channel, beyond which was a misty expanse.
"Kang, what time is it?"
"Eh, Brother Cheng, you’re awake?" Wang Kang was jotting something in a notebook, turned to respond at the sound, not putting down his pen, "It’s five minutes to nine."
"Why is it so cold?"
Cheng Ye sat up slightly and moved his body, only to find a thick coat draped over him.
It was a checkpoint duty coat.
Normally, no one wore this because of the conspicuous "inspection" badge on the back.
Instinctively, he opened a corner, shivered, only feeling a stream of coldness surge up his neck, raising goosebumps.
Practicing martial arts quickened the flow of blood and made practitioners more sensitive to environmental changes.
On usual days, Cheng Ye would sense even a two to three-degree temperature rise.
Now, what made him feel distinctly cold and uncomfortable must have been at least a ten-degree drop, maybe more.
"The temperature dropped, the notice from above says... it’s the effect of the Void Mist."
"Is that so?"
Cheng Ye frowned, sat up, wrapped the coat around him, then walked around the venue to warm up.
Once a warm current flowed from his lower abdomen, spreading to his limbs and bones, driving away the cold,
he took out the Defense Communication to check the latest messages.
He had probably been asleep since 7:15, and now it was just past 9:00, about an hour and a half nap.
The Defense Communication was filled with unread messages, public alerts, and mass messages from the checkpoint.
Additionally, there were three missed calls.
One was naturally from Luo Xiaoxue, another from an unknown number, and one from the checkpoint’s public number.
Was the unknown number Brother B?
Cheng Ye called it back, but the receiver gave a no-permission message.
"Hmm, seems I missed Brother B’s call during my sleep."
For safety reasons, the Defense Communication defaulted to silent mode. Unless he unlocked it with identity verification and pressed to enable sound three times, it wouldn’t make a peep even if the sky fell.
Moreover, this alert lasts at most eight hours, after which it automatically resumes silent mode.
But missing Liu Bi’s call didn’t worry Cheng Ye much. He thought that as long as they could request permission, they would call tonight or tomorrow.
"Hey, Sister Luo, I was too drowsy earlier and missed the call."
"You finally answered!"
Luo Xiaoxue’s voice carried a hint of urgency, "Remember to turn on alerts when you sleep from now on. Luckily, I saved Station Chief Lei’s number and confirmed with him, almost scared to death."
"I was just too sleepy and dozed off. Don’t worry, the checkpoint is very safe... What, a suspected progenitor escaped from the Fog Cave at the hydroelectric station?"
A piece of heavy news came through the receiver.
Cheng Ye suddenly stood up, clenched the Defense Communication, his voice changing tone, instinctively lowering the volume, "Is Brother B okay?"
