Villain's Path System-Chapter 8: Playing With Fire part 2
Pure embarrassment.
"Let me go," she hissed.
"You sure? You might fall again."
"Lucian—"
He helped her stand but didn’t step back immediately. Still close enough to feel the heat radiating off her.
"You fight like you’re trying to prove something," he said, his voice quieter now. More serious. "Like you’re so desperate to be perfect that you can’t admit when something’s wrong."
Her eyes flashed with anger. "You don’t know anything about me."
"Maybe not." He finally stepped back, giving her space. "But I know what it’s like to lose something you built your entire identity around. And I know that pretending you’re fine doesn’t fix the problem."
Seraphina’s expression cracked. Just for a second.
Vulnerability flickered through before she slammed the mask back in place.
"I didn’t ask for a therapy session," she snapped.
"No, you asked for honest feedback." Lucian shrugged. "That’s what I’m giving you. Whether you like it or not."
Silence fell between them.
The wind rustled through the trees surrounding the training grounds.
Finally, Seraphina spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.
"No one’s ever talked to me like this before."
"Like what?"
"Like—" She struggled with the words. "Like I’m not already perfect and I’m allowed to have flaws."
There it is. The real Seraphina. Not the prodigy. Not the warrior goddess. Just a girl tired of wearing a mask.
Lucian felt something twist in his chest.
He’d planned to tease her. Get under her skin. Win her over with charm and manipulation.
But this... this felt different.
Real.
"Everyone has flaws, Seraphina." He said it simply. Honestly. "The only difference is some people are brave enough to admit it."
She looked at him then. Really looked.
Like she was trying to figure out who the hell he actually was.
"You’re nothing like the rumors said you’d be,"
"Yeah, well." Lucian smiled, some of his usual cockiness returning.
"Rumors are written by people who don’t know shit about anything. I’ve learned to ignore them."
Seraphina picked up her sword. But instead of leaving, she turned back to him.
"Same time tomorrow night?"
Lucian raised an eyebrow.
"You want more criticism?"
"I want to get better." Her chin lifted, pride and determination mixing in her eyes. "And apparently, you’re the only person here willing to actually help me do that."
[AFFECTION INCREASED]
Seraphina Ashenblade: 5 → 20
Status: Intrigued → Interested
New Status Effect: "Beginning to Trust"
"Tomorrow night then," Lucian agreed. "But fair warning—I’m going to be even more brutal with my feedback."
"Good." A small smile touched her lips. Actually genuine this time. "I’d be disappointed if you went easy on me."
She started to walk away, then paused.
"Lucian?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you. For not treating me like I’m made of glass." She didn’t look back. "It’s... refreshing."
Then she was gone, leaving him alone in the moonlit training ring.
Lucian let out a long breath.
Well. That went better than expected.
[SPECIAL EVENT COMPLETED]
"The Swordswoman’s Pride"
You helped Seraphina without ulterior motives. She’s beginning to see you differently.
Fate Points earned: +25
New Skill Unlocked: "Combat Analysis" (You can identify weaknesses in fighting styles more easily)
[WARNING: PROTAGONIST DIVERGENCE DETECTED]
In the original story, Cassian Brightmore was supposed to help Seraphina with her training starting tomorrow. That event has been overwritten.
Fate Correction probability: Low (Alternative story path stabilizing)
Lucian grinned at the notification.
Sorry, Cassian. Guess you’ll have to find someone else to bond with.
He headed back toward the dorms, mind already working through the next steps.
Seraphina was responding faster than expected. Elira had shown interest. Now he just needed to make contact with Aria and the main trio would all be in play.
But something nagged at him.
That moment with Seraphina—catching her, being honest with her—it hadn’t felt like manipulation.
It felt... real.
Don’t get attached, he warned himself. This is still a game. A story you’re rewriting. Keep your eyes on the goal.
But even as he thought it, he knew it was getting complicated.
These weren’t just characters anymore.
They were people.
And he was starting to care about them in ways the system couldn’t quantify.
Fuck.
[MEANWHILE - CENTRAL TOWER]
Cassian Brightmore stood at his window, looking out over the academy grounds.
Tomorrow, he’d planned to help Seraphina with her training. The perfect chance to grow closer to her.
But something felt... off.
Like pieces of a puzzle he couldn’t quite see were moving on their own.
He shook his head. Probably just nerves about starting at a new academy.
Everything would work out, like it always had.
After all, he was the protagonist.
What could possibly go wrong?
