Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 239 - 233 Big Melon
On her way back to Paigou Village, Angel was distraught and preoccupied.
The news she had heard at Cai Qiong’s was so far beyond her expectations that she spent the entire journey questioning herself. How could she have failed to see Doctor Wang’s true face?
After all, I’m a woman who has developed the eyes of a hawk. I’ve always been a standout when it comes to picking men out of a crowd. But today, I’ve truly crashed and burned, left battered and bruised by that single phone call from Cai Qiong.
"What’s the matter with you?" When Huang Long saw Angel, the shell-shocked look on her face took him aback, and he quickly asked, "Did the Cai Family refuse?"
Seeing Angel still not speaking, Huang Long assumed he was right and tried to comfort her. "It’s okay. If the Cai Family doesn’t work out, we’ll find another way. There’s always a solution. You shouldn’t be too..."
Angel finally cut him off, asking a question as if to herself, "What do you think of Doctor Wang Jian... as a person?"
"As a person?" Huang Long was even more puzzled. "What do you mean?"
Angel continued, "I mean, is there any chance that Doctor Wang Jian is actually a rich heir who concealed his identity to come to this village and be a simple doctor?"
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Huang Long rolled his eyes, a look of helplessness on his face. "What’s gotten into you? You take one trip and come back a fool. Haven’t we already checked all the information on Wang Jian? Have you forgotten?"
"Right," Angel nodded. "I know. He’s just an ordinary boy from a farming family who worked his way into medical school. He only came back to be a village doctor because he offended someone in the Capital City, but..."
"But what?"
"Do you know what news I got from Cai Qiong’s place today?" Angel took a deep breath. "The interview won’t just be with Cai Xing, the chairman of the Cai Group. We can also interview Peng Qing."
After Angel told him everything, Huang Long finally understood why she was so stunned.
"Peng Qing?" Huang Long naturally knew the name. "Are you sure it’s *that* Peng Qing?"
Angel, sitting beside Huang Long, numbly nodded her head.
After getting confirmation, Huang Long fell silent as well. The two of them sat on their stools, taking a long while to snap out of their daze.
Huang Long silently reviewed everything he knew about Peng Qing. Founder of Ali Technology Company... a titan of the global medical device manufacturing industry... He had also received countless national awards and honors; Huang Long couldn’t even begin to list them all. The name Peng Qing alone was a symbol of international influence.
For Huang Long, the mere mention of this name meant everything.
It was a good thing Angel didn’t tell him what Cai Xing had said on the phone, or Huang Long would have been in even worse shape. Now he finally understood why Angel had asked him if Wang Jian was some rich heir the moment she got back.
However, a memory surfaced for Huang Long. He patted Angel on the shoulder and said, "Do you remember what we saw the last time we came to the village?"
"What?" Angel glanced at him, not understanding.
Huang Long had no choice but to remind her. "The last time we were here, we saw a man who looked a lot like Peng Qing getting into a car with a young man. You should have an impression of that, right?"
"Ah, right, right, right!"
Angel then recalled it. At the time, she had even mentioned that the man might be Peng Qing, but they had both dismissed the idea. It seemed now that what they had seen was real.
That man was Peng Qing himself, and the young man Peng Qing had invited into his car had to have been Wang Jian.
Angel and Huang Long exchanged a look, feeling like they had just stumbled upon a massive scoop.
Since Wang Jian wasn’t a rich heir or anyone with a special identity, the only possible connection between him and Peng Qing was that of a doctor and a patient.
"Peng Qing isn’t sick, so what would he need Wang Jian for?" Huang Long muttered with a slight frown.
Then, it hit Angel. She slapped her thigh and exclaimed, "You forgot! Peng Qing’s son—he’s been seeking treatment from doctors all over the world!"
"You mean...?" Huang Long caught on, but his brow remained furrowed as he asked, "But his son’s illness is something that doctors across the globe have been helpless against, right? There are rumors that he’s already been declared to be in critical condition. Wang Jian’s medical skills are formidable, but surely not so great that he could surpass so many doctors from around the world?"
The question plunged them both back into silence.
It wasn’t that they found it impossible... On the contrary, the question made them both consider the same possibility.
If Wang Jian hadn’t cured Peng Qing’s son, why would Cai Xing say Peng Qing would also agree to an interview? If Wang Jian hadn’t cured his son’s illness, on what basis would Peng Qing hold him in such high regard? If... Wang Jian really did cure this illness, wouldn’t that mean he’s actually more skilled than all those doctors from around the globe?
What began as a wild hypothetical solidified into a startling conclusion after just a little speculation. This was why they fell silent once more.
After the silence, they both burst out laughing. They knew this special feature was going to be a massive success.
If Wang Jian had known about their wild speculation, he would have surely laughed out loud too.
In the world of medicine, there was no absolute first or second place, as the field was divided into countless specializations. Even though Wang Jian’s Qi Cultivation gave him extraordinary techniques that could cure some intractable diseases, it didn’t mean he had gotten arrogant, believing he was the best in the world and could heal anything.
There were some conditions Wang Jian was helpless against, like organ failure. Yet, surgical experts could save lives by directly transplanting organs. Thus, Xu Changqing had always taught him not to harbor a competitive spirit or to think of himself as invincible. The more Wang Jian’s medical skills improved, the more he understood the depth of Xu Changqing’s words.
Some illnesses even required a combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine to achieve good results. This was also why Wang Jian had a good understanding of Western medicine. Consider the ancient physician Hua Tuo. If he had known that his craniotomies and bone-scraping treatments were surgical procedures, and if he had understood how to build a sterile operating room, then perhaps Western medicine as we know it would not exist today. There would be no division between Chinese and Western medicine at all.
What Wang Jian could do now was cast aside prejudice and draw on the strengths of both, which was the true beginning of his progress.
While Angel and Huang Long were losing their minds over their discovery, Wang Jian happened to be reading a medical book. Before long, he received a phone call. It was from his senior brother, Mu Rongyu.
"Senior Brother, what made you call? Is something wrong?" Seeing Mu Rongyu’s name, Wang Jian’s first thought was that there might be a problem with Teacher Song, as his senior brother rarely, if ever, contacted him.
Mu Rongyu, always a serious man, heard this and replied irritably, "Can’t I call you if there’s nothing wrong? If the teacher hadn’t asked for you, I’d be scolding you right now."
Wang Jian chuckled sheepishly. He didn’t need to guess to know that Mu Rongyu had a grimace on his face on the other end of the line.
"The teacher is looking for me?"
"Yes. The teacher’s health has improved a lot recently, and he’s planning to visit your area for a change of scenery. I recall your hometown has a great environment, perfect for recuperation, right?"
"Oh, yes, yes! If the teacher wants to come, I’ll arrange everything."
"What’s there for you to arrange? I’m not your senior brother for nothing. Alright, hanging up now. You get back to what you were doing."
Mu Rongyu hung up immediately, giving Wang Jian no chance to respond. Every time he talked to his senior brother, the hospital director, Wang Jian felt like he was a student again, being reprimanded by Teacher Song.
He suddenly felt a wave of relief that his master, Xu Changqing, hadn’t taken on any other disciples, leaving him the only one in their line. While there were other disciples of the same school at the Daoist Temple, Wang Jian had never been there, so they had no effect on his life.
「Meanwhile, in the courtyard of the Song Family’s home in the Capital City...」
Mu Rongyu looked awkwardly at Song Yijin beside him and said with a bitter smile, "Why didn’t you let me tell him the truth? You even made me put on a cold face."
Song Yijin was still in his wheelchair, but his complexion was so much better he looked like a completely different person from when Wang Jian had last visited. He laughed, seeing right through Mu Rongyu’s act. "What do you mean I *made* you do it? Haven’t you always been like this with your junior brother over the years?"
"Well..." Mu Rongyu’s lips twitched awkwardly. He wanted to say something but held his tongue. He desperately wanted to explain that it was all in the past. Now that Wang Jian had cured their teacher, he no longer held any of his old grudges. On the contrary, he’d grown quite fond of his junior brother. In fact, he was even planning to use this trip to Wang Jian’s hometown to try and poach him for his own hospital.
Of course, he had no intention of telling his teacher that.
Song Yijin paid him no mind, simply talking as if to himself. "That junior brother of yours is just too stubborn. If you told him I was coming to support his documentary, he’d definitely refuse to let me visit. But if you say I’m going to recuperate and relax, he’ll surely agree."
Mu Rongyu nodded. "That’s true..."
He thought about where he’d heard the news and couldn’t help but marvel, "My junior brother’s medical skills are incredible. He even cured Peng Qing’s son. It seems we’ve really underestimated him."
Song Yijin said, "Underestimated him? It’s more than that. His master, that Xu Changqing, is no simple character."
Thinking about some of the things he had heard, Song Yijin suddenly flared up with frustration, scolding aloud, "This foolish kid! With such a great teacher and master, not to mention you as his senior brother, he stubbornly refuses to use his connections! He gets bullied to the point that he has to run back to his hometown, and he still does nothing about it. Truly..."
Song Yijin had wanted to call Wang Jian a hopeless case—an Adou who couldn’t be helped—but he couldn’t. After all, Wang Jian was incredibly skilled, and his character was excellent. Aside from his lack of drive, he had no real flaws. The scolding died on Song Yijin’s lips, and he had to forcefully swallow it back down, utterly frustrated.
In the end, he let it go with a wave of his hand and steered his electric wheelchair toward his room in the quadrangle house, still muttering as he went, "This documentary business... if you hadn’t found out about it, he probably would have just let the opportunity slip by again. Whatever... I don’t care anymore. This old man is tired. I’m going to bed. And you can get lost."
Watching Song Yijin wheel himself back to his room, Mu Rongyu finally let out a laugh, as if the order to "get lost" wasn’t directed at him.
He felt his teacher was absolutely right about one thing: his junior brother was incredibly stubborn.
Back when Teacher Song and Wang Jian had their falling out, Mu Rongyu, as the senior brother, had gone out of his way to persuade Wang Jian to give in. But Wang Jian was obstinate and refused to bow his head, which was why Mu Rongyu had always treated him so coldly.
Now that the hatchet was buried, Mu Rongyu could finally be himself again.
The teacher’s frustration was justified. Any other doctor would fight tooth and nail for a chance to appear in a documentary that would bring so much publicity. But Wang Jian? Not only did he not seize the opportunity, he actually found it a damn nuisance.
Mu Rongyu and Song Yijin’s intentions were simple: they had no intention of letting Wang Jian carry on like this.
As his senior brother and teacher, their plan was straightforward. They were going to push Wang Jian into the limelight and make him stand tall for all to see.
