Village Doctor's Women-Chapter 203: Reporter Angel 197
Cai Qiong did exactly as she said. After returning to the Wang family, she made a phone call to a friend at the television station—her high school classmate.
She hadn’t attended high school in Shanghai City, but rather at a private school in the province. This school was completely different from a typical high school. Back when Cai Qiong was young, it was already known for its elite education; it offered various open lectures like a university, brought students from multiple countries together in the same classes, used a mix of Chinese and English, and even fostered a multilingual environment. The school was even more absurd now, offering direct pathways to prestigious foreign universities. The ridiculous part was that only the wealthy ever knew about schools like this. Children from ordinary families, no matter how good their grades, would never even learn that such an option existed. But that was a digression.
Angel had been Cai Qiong’s classmate at this school. Afterward, however, Cai Qiong went to the United Kingdom while Angel went to Mei Country, and they had drifted apart.
"Hello?!"
"Xiao Jun?" Angel’s voice carried a clear note of surprise. "You’re back in the country?"
"Yeah," Cai Qiong laughed. "I’ve been back for a while. I heard you were going to intern at the provincial television station. Are you there now?"
Although they were classmates, they weren’t particularly close, so Cai Qiong got straight to the point after a bit of small talk.
This question happened to be exactly what was on Angel’s mind, and it opened the floodgates. "Yeah. I’ve been here for a few months, and it’s killing me. If I’d known better, I would’ve just become a doctor like you. That would’ve been fine."
"Look who’s talking," Cai Qiong laughed. "I wonder who it was that studied medicine for two years only to switch to journalism." News of Angel’s decision had been circulating in their high school alumni group chat for a while, so Cai Qiong knew about it. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
The memory of such a youthful, impulsive decision made them both laugh.
Angel, feeling a bit embarrassed, admitted, "I was young at the time and felt that studying medicine wasn’t for me... but I don’t regret it."
The two caught up for a while, chatting about everyday things. As they talked, Angel sensed Cai Qiong was distracted and knew she had called for a reason, so she asked directly, "Did you call me about something today?"
"Yes," Cai Qiong said, not beating around the bush. "I’m in Shanghai City right now. I heard a few days ago that your provincial TV station was here shooting a documentary, so I wanted to ask you about it. Do you know anything about that?"
Angel broke into a smile. "What a coincidence. I was the one who went to Shanghai City for that. What do you want to ask?"
Cai Qiong’s eyes lit up. This is absolutely perfect.
"I heard that your television station is planning to shoot a medical documentary."
Angel didn’t ask how Cai Qiong knew, since she was well aware of the Cai family’s business. She figured that for Cai Qiong to have this information, someone from the station must have already approached the Cai Group.
"There is indeed such a documentary project. Are you wanting to..."
Ever since documentaries from Demon City like *Emergency Department Story* became popular, their province had greenlit a similar project. After all, there was no shortage of comparable documentaries like *Life Gate* or *Human World*. It was practically a political assignment of a different kind.
Before Angel could finish, Cai Qiong interjected, "I have a plan that might be able to help you."
"I know you’re probably aiming for something like *Emergency Department Story*. Works like that can certainly have an impact, but other stations have produced too many similar shows in the last couple of years. If you just make another one like it, it’ll be hard to stand out, and I’m afraid it won’t be easy to get approval from your superiors."
Angel listened earnestly, because her team had been discussing this very problem. If the provincial TV station wanted to stand out from the flood of documentaries, finding a unique angle was crucial. For instance, *Emergency Department Story* focused specifically on the emergency department, *Human World* depicted the lives of hospital patients, and *Life Gate* told stories from the obstetrics and gynecology department. Each had its own unique focus. If the provincial TV station simply copied them, they would surely fail to deliver a satisfactory result.
This topic-planning issue had been troubling them for a long time. Even on her recent trip to film footage for a poverty alleviation story, Angel had been racking her brain over this very problem.
"I didn’t call to ask you to film Cai’s Hospital," Cai Qiong said. "I wanted to suggest you try a story on rural doctors. It would tie in perfectly with your poverty alleviation project and align with national policy."
Angel was stunned. "I just had the same idea! When I was in Shanghai City recently, I heard about a young rural doctor. His medical skills are supposedly exceptional, and he’s very young. I just finished writing the proposal and was about to submit it when you called."
"Really?" Cai Qiong paused, then chuckled. "Well, I was just about to introduce you to a rural doctor..."
"A rural doctor?" Angel asked. "Since when are you acquainted with rural doctors?" With Cai Qiong’s family background, it seemed impossible for her to have any connection to one; at least, that’s how Angel saw it.
"Never mind that," Cai Qiong said, not bothering to explain. "Anyway, he’s a friend of mine."
"A friend?" Hearing this piqued Angel’s interest even more. "Alright, I’ll write him into the proposal and submit it."
After they hung up, Angel waited for Cai Qiong to send her friend’s information. The moment the email arrived, she eagerly opened the attached file. The first name she saw in the document left her dumbfounded.
"Wang Jian..."
What an unbelievable coincidence. Her visit to Paigou Village was what inspired her in the first place—it was hearing Wang Jian’s story that led her to develop a proposal based on him. So, even if Cai Qiong hadn’t mentioned him, he was already in her proposal.
Originally, Angel had only been interested in the project itself, but now she was growing curious about Wang Jian too. After all, Angel had never once seen the great Miss Cai Qiong go out of her way to help a man like this before.
The matter concerning the Cai family didn’t drag on for long.
Cai Xing stayed at Wang Jian’s home for a week, during which time news of his death spread far and wide. Some independent media outlets had even published obituaries. Strangely, however, the Cai Group had yet to issue an official statement on the matter. More perceptive netizens started to notice that only smaller, independent media outlets were reporting on it; no larger media organizations or official state media had released any news about Cai Xing. The situation itself was bizarre.
Inside the Cai Group, Cai Zhi was fuming.
"Why haven’t we issued an announcement?"
Without an official announcement, the company wouldn’t truly descend into chaos, the stock price wouldn’t be seriously affected, and his plan couldn’t be executed.
At the board meeting, Cai Zhi dropped all pretense of civility, not even showing Cai Qiang any respect. "Information about the company chairman is being released by independent media, and none of you find that shameful? Why is everyone so quiet? You’re not usually like this."
Cai Zhi’s words fell on deaf ears; no one in the conference room paid him any attention. Even Cai Qiang wore a dark expression, in no mood to engage.
"Wen Ji!" Cai Zhi suppressed his fury and turned to Cai Wenji. "I’m saying this as your uncle, but as his son, how can you be so clueless? Do you need an outsider to teach you what to do?"
"Uncle Zhi is right," Cai Wenji replied with a calm smile, unfazed by the jab. "Family matters don’t require the intervention of outsiders." He made no effort to hide his meaning; the sarcastic barb in his words was unmistakable.
"What’s that supposed to mean?" Cai Zhi snapped. "Are you implying I’m an outsider?"
