Chapter 166: The Black Book

There was a quiet pause as Zethan’s lips curled into a sly smile. He leaned in slightly.

"What if I am," he whispered huskily, his eyes glinting with mischief.

Rose froze for a moment. To Zethan’s utmost surprise, she then smiled back, her lips curving up gently.

"If you are, that would be awesome," she said softly. "I’ve read about lots and lots of species that we humans have no idea about. I’ve always believed it to be true, even though I had no proof. Not to mention the book I read—it didn’t make me lose my doubt, in fact, it gave me more reasons why it’s true. But I don’t believe such things exist anymore... that must have been billions of years ago." Rose spoke suddenly.

Zethan watched her intently, eyes slightly widened in quiet surprise. He hadn’t expected that reaction—or those words.

Now this woman kept surprising him more and more. The more he thought he knew, the more she punched him in the gut with another twist.

"And what book did you read, if I may ask?" he inquired, his curiosity piquing. His hands were wrapped around her waist as she sat on his lap.

Rose’s face flushed crimson, and she whispered as if speaking aloud would be disrespectful.

"The Black Book."

Immediately those words left her lips, Zethan’s gaze darkened in disbelief—but Rose had not caught that. She continued silently.

"For reasons unknown, it was actually banned at the local library after I returned it, which only made me more curious. If it was such a harmless book, why would they ban it? It tells a story, a tale from the past where..." She paused, pressing her lips together, wondering if she sounded foolish.

"I know you probably won’t believe me if I say this," she added softly.

"Go on, say it," Zethan encouraged gently, studying her closely. He was beginning to realize that this wife of his was no ordinary woman.

She leaned in and whispered even softer, "It’s about a time when werewolves, vampires, witches, and humans lived together—like it was accepted... It might seem like a normal story to anyone else or something untrue, but not to me. I feel if seers exist—which is surprising enough and accepted without people wondering how—then maybe... that book is true. Maybe it was written by a seer in the past."

Zethan’s body stilled.

Rose, who felt his body still, pressed her lips tighter. She had come here with boring talk again. She turned her face to the side. Why did she always forget that not everyone was going to listen? Not to mention, her talk made no sense. Who would even think that? When she had told her father about this, he had suggested they visit the local physician to check if she had any issues with her head. He even asked her if she had hit her head somewhere and this was just a side effect.

"Go on," Zethan spoke softly, and Rose slowly turned her face back to him.

Rose spoke quietly, her voice almost a whisper as she continued, not realizing how much she had spoken.

"It’s very boring, Your Highness."

Rose immediately disagreed with herself in a soft tone. Was she actually having issues? She wondered. It felt like what she was saying made no sense. Who would read a book and take it so seriously? And she was actually telling her husband—the king—about this so-called black book.

"No, it’s not. It’s very useful," Zethan encouraged quietly.

Rose rested her hands on her chin and continued quietly.

"One thing about the Black Book was that it was blank. When I first opened it at the library, there were no words—or rather, all the pages were completely blank. That’s what made me so intrigued. I borrowed it for three weeks because it was such a large book, and borrowing it for one day would make no sense, even though there were no words."

She paused, eyes thoughtful.

"The strange thing happened back in my room. When I lit a small candle and held it close to the pages, I felt like some hidden writing was there. When I pressed the candlelight closer, the words slowly began to appear. That’s when I realized it was the candlelight that made the words visible. Very surprising... It made the book even more mysterious."

Rose’s voice grew softer, almost reverent. It was like the more she talked, the softer it got.

"And the story itself made a lot of sense, in a way. The tale seemed too detailed, too real, to be just someone’s imagination. Not that someone couldn’t imagine something like that. But I already believed such creatures existed... maybe because of all the stories I read when I was little. But reading this book made it even more real to me. Even though the later parts were more difficult to understand, it all seemed to fit."

She lowered her gaze, quiet and thoughtful.

Zethan quietly rested his face on his knuckles, eyes still locked on hers, his hands still wrapped around her waist. His voice was low and curious.

"So tell me, why do you believe this so much?"

"I don’t know," she shrugged and bit her lip softly before adding, "It just makes a lot of sense to me."

"Among all the creatures mentioned, which intrigued you the most?"

Her face flushed deeply as she whispered back.

"The vampires."

"The vampires intrigued me the most," Rose said quietly. "It’s not just about their abilities, but the way they truly unite as one. And they respect their leader deeply. In the war described in the story, they really stuck together."

She glanced down, voice softening.

"Unlike the werewolves, who all instinctively protect the alpha, the vampires—even the vampire king—protected a half-vampire, someone who was both human and vampire."

She paused, gathering her thoughts.

"Even though I spent weeks searching through the story, the creature that surprised me most after that was the humans. We might seem the weakest, but..."

Her voice dropped further as she leaned in slightly.

"After being killed in the brutal war, the book spoke of a place—the land of the dead—where humans were moved but that was at the ending part of the book. It depends on how well you lived, whether you get a chance to stay there. There wasn’t much said about it. Not to mention, only humans were allowed there. I would simply call it a place for second chances a non species can only be there if giving birth to there."

She stopped abruptly, realizing she’d spoken more than usual. This was the longest she’d ever shared about what she’d read. Where was she even going with this? Not to mention how ridiculous she must have looked now.

Zethan was silent. He simply studied her. Their gazes locked. Rose immediately became slightly panicked, her head lowered.

"Umm... that is just what I feel. It’s nothing..." she trailed off as Zethan pushed her chin slowly to gaze at him.

Finally, he spoke deeply, his hands moving gently toward her neck.

"You already know more than enough, sweetheart." Those words stiffened Rose.

Know more than enough?

’He is simply curious don’t overthink...’ she screamed at herself.

His voice lowered with a hint of surprise and dark amusement.

"Now tell me—how did you find that book?"

Rose immediately shrugged and spoke quietly. Her heart warmed. He did not mind her telling him about this. He was the first person who didn’t look at her like a fool or someone who was going mad but was simply at their first stage.

"I didn’t exactly find it. I was actually looking for a project about rocks. Near my village, I found a rock that felt like crystal, so I was searching for a book about it. That’s when I saw the Black Book. It looked very different from the others—none of the usual titles on the cover. It had no name at all."

She paused briefly before continuing softly,

"After I returned it, I wanted to borrow it again because there was more I needed to check. But, surprisingly, the village librarian told me it was no longer available. They said it had been moved here... to the castle." She paused as she realized—

Her eyes suddenly lit up as she whispered,

"Oh—it’s here."

She turn toward him.

"Your Majesty, the librarian said the book was moved to the castle for safekeeping. That means it’s here."

Excitement bubbled within her as she bit her lip, trying to hold it back in, sending Zethan speechless again.

"....."

His expression quickly darkened.

Suddenly, Rose’s eyes widened, sensing a sudden shadow and an aura of something dark that came and went.

She looked at him and asked quietly,

"Do you know about the book?"

Zethan nodded. Rose frame went rigid as her pupils dilated in shock.

"Yes I know the black book Roselina."

Rose’s eyes flew wider, she clasped her hand over her mouth in disbelief.

He... he knew a... about the book?

But how?

"It’s a forbidden book sweetheart."

She couldn’t believe she had actually uncovered so much—and all because of him. Was she going to be punished for this? And if Zethan already knew, then why had he asked questions? The thought made her sink deeper into reflection. She had answered without fully reasoning it out, yet her mind kept spinning with answers. freewebnσvel.cѳm

Zethan’s voice came low and quiet.

"You’re a very smart wife, I must say. The way you think and arrange your perceptions—it’s remarkable. Truly remarkable, my wife."

He paused, then added,

"But that book is now with the seer. It seems you already know more than I expected. Hmm."

Rose fell silent, her mouth opening and closing as if to speak, but unable to find the words. Had she really read a forbidden book? What did that mean for her?

Then Zethan moved closer, gently running his fingers through her dark hair.

"I’m still impressed by how thoughtful and deep you’ve gone into this."

Rose remained silent as he continued.

He leaned in closer his lips brushing against her ear, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"You don’t need to be scared. But there’s one thing I have to tell you—everything you read in that book..."

His face darkened, eyes shadowed with gravity.

"...it’s all very true. It really happened."

Then he sat back locking his gaze with her as he spoke, his voice low, deep and steady,

"I myself witnessed it all... because I am a vampire."
