Huang Yi was summoned to Kong Shenghui’s office. As soon as he stepped in, Kong Shenghui stared at him with a grave expression and said, "What on earth are you trying to do?"
Feigning innocence, Huang Yi responded, "What do you mean, Director Kong? What’s the matter?"
"Did you threaten Gao Zhitao?" Kong Shenghui cut to the chase without any preamble.
Upon hearing this, Huang Yi’s mind began to race. He had just met with Wang Hu and his crew; could they have immediately gone to threaten Gao Zhitao? If it was merely talk and no substantive action, it would only prove that Wang Hu and his men are utterly useless.
"That’s a false accusation, Director Kong. Gao Zhitao? Would I dare to threaten him? He’s now the city bureau chief, while I’m just running a district bureau. Besides, with his grandfather’s reputation behind him, there’s no way I’d even consider threatening him." Huang Yi said, looking thoroughly aggrieved.
Kong Shenghui kept his eyes on him, but found no clues on Huang Yi’s face.
With a sigh, Kong Shenghui patted Huang Yi’s shoulder and said, "I understand your frustration. Bear with it for now; when the opportunity presents itself in the future, I’ll make sure to reinstate you in a prominent role."
Kong Shenghui spoke with sincerity and conviction, prompting Huang Yi to nod immediately and say, "Thank you for your guidance, Director Kong. I will work hard and make sure I never let you down."
Kong Shenghui spoke at length with Huang Yi, mainly advising him not to act rashly and reassuring him that plenty of opportunities lay ahead.
Huang Yi also pledged that he was calm now and accepted responsibility for the explosion in the mall complex.
Ultimately, Kong Shenghui let Huang Yi leave. Following their conversation, he believed Huang Yi understood the situation and knew how to act appropriately.
As Huang Yi walked out of Kong Shenghui’s office, his expression suddenly changed. He was now regretting involving Wang Hu and his crew.
Wang Hu’s men were desperados—people who would do anything for money. Talking to them about honor and brotherhood was a joke.
Though he had done them a favor before, they owed him little in return. When danger came knocking, they would undoubtedly betray him.
However, since the bowstring had already been drawn, there was no turning back now. He realized he’d have to forge ahead, no matter what.
After leaving Huang Yi, Wang Hu and his crew casually picked a small diner and settled down.
"Hu-ge, what do we do now? Are we really going to take down Gao Zhitao?" one of them asked.
Though the four of them had confidently assured Huang Yi earlier, doubts began creeping in as soon as they left.
One of them was already considering fleeing. After all, they’d just been freed from prison, and the memory of life inside was unbearable—he had no desire to go back.
After contemplating a moment, Wang Hu nodded firmly, "Yes, we’ll do it. Once this job is done, we’ll leave for good and never come back. Before we go, we’ll demand another sum of money from Huang Yi, and then we’ll each go our own way."
Initially, the man didn’t want to participate, but the promise of money swayed him. Turning to Wang Hu, he asked skeptically, "What kind of cash could a police bureau chief possibly have? He’s nothing but a pauper."
Wang Hu responded with a mysterious grin, "Don’t underestimate him. He’s got enough money to last you several lifetimes."
Wang Hu’s words tempted everyone present, and they decided to proceed with the job. Once they’d gotten their payout, they would disappear.
They weren’t worried about Huang Yi skipping payment because this concerned Huang Yi’s very survival.
On Gao Zhitao’s end, after making a phone call to Xiang Yu, he finally felt at ease.
Gao Mantang stormed back in from outside, slamming himself into a chair and declaring, "Everything’s taken care of, rest assured."
"What’s taken care of?" Gao Zhitao asked.
"That jackass who called to threaten you must’ve been someone Huang Yi sent. I’ve already told Kong Shenghui to handle him properly. If he dares to make another call, I’ll personally break three of his legs," Gao Mantang said.
Gao Zhitao was speechless. He knew his grandfather better than anyone—temperamental and domineering under normal circumstances, and completely unabashed when it came to threats against his grandson.
Still, Gao Zhitao felt warmth in his chest; having a grandfather like this made him feel blessed.
Around noon, Xiang Yu and two others arrived at Gao Zhitao’s room. Gao Zhitao had grown restless staying cooped up there, and their arrival lifted his spirits.
When he saw Xiang Yu, he laughed aloud. Xiang Yu was also covered in bandages, looking like a kindred soul in misfortune.
Tie Zhuzi saw Gao Zhitao laughing and began poking him playfully, causing Gao Zhitao to writhe in pain and beg for mercy. But despite this, he couldn’t stop laughing.
"Xiang Yu, what’s with you? Did you deliberately wrap yourself up like this to accompany me?" Gao Zhitao teased, laughing.
"Took a tumble, is all," Xiang Yu said nonchalantly.
The excuse was weak—nobody rolls down a staircase and ends up entangled in bandages from head to toe. Even Gao Mantang shot Xiang Yu a suspicious look and asked, "What happened to you? Was it revenge? If someone’s targeted you, say so now. I’ll make sure they regret it."
Gao Mantang, in his world of certainty, assumed this was yet another scheme by Huang Yi, who dared not touch Gao Zhitao directly and thus lashed out at Xiang Yu.
Chuckling, Xiang Yu shook his head and said, "I’m fine. I just clumsily fell down some stairs."
Though Gao Mantang wasn’t convinced, he refrained from pressing further since Xiang Yu was unwilling to elaborate.
Gao Zhitao laughed heartily, pointing at Xiang Yu, "Honestly, you’re a grown man. How are you still this careless?"
Unfazed by the banter, Xiang Yu took a seat. Turning serious, he looked at Gao Zhitao and asked, "Tell me what’s happening. Who’s threatening you?"
Before Gao Zhitao could respond, Gao Mantang interjected, "I already know. It’s definitely that Huang Yi trying to play his tricks. I just called Kong Shenghui; you can relax now."
Frowning, Xiang Yu said, "How are you so sure it was him making the call?"
Eyes widening, Gao Mantang replied, "Do we even need to ask? Who else could it possibly be? Right now, Huang Yi’s got it in for Zhitao. Of course, he’d target him."
Xiang Yu was somewhat exasperated—this old man was hopelessly one-track-minded.
"I think this situation might not be so simple. We’d better proceed with caution," Xiang Yu advised.
Unknown to Gao Mantang, the ones responsible for rigging the mall with explosives were part of the Falcon Organization led by Ren Baohe. If he had known, his reaction might have been unprecedented.
"A mere district police chief wants to threaten Zhitao? He must have a death wish! With me here, you have nothing to worry about. Is your injury their doing? If it is, tell me now. I’ll chop them to pieces right this moment," Gao Mantang yelled, his eyes blazing.
Xiang Yu felt a swell of warmth in his chest and looked at Gao Mantang with gratitude. "Thank you, but my injury wasn’t caused by them."
Hearing this, Gao Mantang nodded and sank back into his chair.
"How many security personnel do we have here, and where are they stationed?" Xiang Yu asked, turning to Gao Mantang.
With a hint of pride, Gao Mantang answered, "I have twenty people posted here in total. On the surface, you’ll see only two, but the rest are stationed in concealed locations."
Xiang Yu nodded upon hearing this. Looks like the old man wasn’t as simple-minded as he appeared...
