Chapter 215: Into the Enemy Zone [BONUS]

The rain poured down as if it would never end, drenching the barren earth in an endless, rhythmic assault. Thunder cracked overhead, echoing like a warning across the wasteland. Flashes of lightning briefly carved twisted shapes into the dark horizon, like scars on a dying world.

A hoverjet glided smoothly through the storm-choked skies, carrying a six-person squad in its wide cabin.

"Victor, focus. We’re on a mission," Dalin Ravencourt snapped, casting an irritated glance at the blond, ponytailed man smirking at his phone.

"Okay, just a sec. Let me finish this line," he replied, eyes still glued to the screen.

Dalin frowned, clearly unimpressed by his lack of seriousness. "What could possibly be that important?"

Victor didn’t answer right away. He kept typing, then tapped the screen to send something. Only then did he look up, a grin tugging at his lips.

"The internet’s blowing up. Everyone’s talking about Adyr on the forums."

That caught Selina’s attention. She leaned in slightly, her voice curious. "What are they saying?"

Victor shrugged. "They say he’s a monster, a devil. Just looking at him makes them feel like they’re gonna pass out. Too terrifying to watch, blah blah."

His grin faded into a frustrated expression, the confusion clear in his eyes. "My bro’s out there saving their asses, and they still can’t appreciate what he’s doing for them."

"I didn’t know people were this fragile. Fainting at the sight of a little blood," Dalin muttered, snorting in irritation.

While the other three spoke casually, Evangeline Ravencourt sat quietly, her eyes fixed on the small window. She stared through the heavy curtain of rain, where the distant mutant horde looked no larger than a swarm of ants. At their center, a lone figure moved like a shadow among them. After a moment, she shifted her gaze back to the trio chatting as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

"You guys don’t feel it?" Her voice was soft, genuinely curious.

"Yeah, I feel jealous. That bastard’s getting all the attention." Victor’s lip twitched with a hint of bitterness.

"I’m talking about a strange feeling that hangs heavy in the air," Evangeline corrected.

She glanced at the other two players seated nearby. Their faces were slightly pale, and their hands were clenched tightly. And their eyes... carried something deeper.

She looked back toward the group. "There’s been this strange feeling. It’s been coming from him for a while now."

She paused, hesitating for a moment, then shifted her gaze to the others, as if waiting for confirmation. When both of them gave a subtle nod, she finally said it.

"Fear."

"What do you mean?" Dalin asked, then added with a mocking tone, "Don’t tell me you’re all getting scared just because we’re heading to the enemy headquarters?"

Not long ago, thanks to intel provided by Shelter City 8’s STF forces, they had located a suspicious zone—possibly the hiding place of two Overlords—and immediately deployed. Given that, a little tension or even fear was understandable. But that wasn’t what Evangeline was talking about.

She shook her head. "No, it’s not that. Like I said, it’s something coming from him." She pointed out the window toward the distant horde.

At her words, Selina and Dalin paused, exchanging a glance. They didn’t quite understand what she meant.

They didn’t feel any fear, nor did they sense anything unusual. But when they looked at the three players from Shelter City 8, it didn’t seem like they were lying either.

"No way," Dalin muttered, suddenly pausing as if something had clicked in her memory.

"What is it?" Selina asked, curiosity creeping into her voice.

"I’ve seen something like this before... a power like that. But..." She trailed off, her brows furrowed, eyes fixed on the floor in a distant stare, chewing her thumbnail unconsciously.

What surfaced in her mind was a memory from the sword training room—when Adyr had sparred with Rhys.

Back then, she had felt something strange radiating from him. A pressure that clung to her body made it hard to breathe, as if a heavy weight had been dropped on her chest.

But could it really be the same thing now?

They were far from the battlefield, flying high in a hoverjet. And even Victor had mentioned that people were feeling it just by watching the broadcast at home. That part made no sense. It sounded absurd.

"There’s no way a Rank 3 Spark has a skill like that, maybe Rank 4," Dalin muttered, her voice low as she went on to explain what had happened back in the training room.

"Do you think he’s already Rank 3?" Evangeline asked after hearing the explanation, though even as she spoke, she struggled to believe it herself. She had barely reached Rank 2, and the thought of someone already at Rank 3 unsettled her.

If this was truly a Spark skill, there was only one logical explanation: Rank 2 practitioners could subdue Rank 3 Sparks and use their skills, but to subdue a Rank 4 Spark, one had to be at least Rank 3.

For a moment, no one spoke. They all silently considered the possibility.

Yes, there were Sparks with skills that could affect emotion, aura, or perception. But something this widespread? This potent? For Rank 3, it seemed... unlikely. And Rank 4? They hadn’t even witnessed one’s power yet.

The strangest part was, while Selina and the others felt nothing, the players from Shelter City 8 were clearly under immense pressure. That alone added another layer of mystery to the situation.

As the group sat in silence, trying to piece together what kind of power Adyr truly possessed, the pilot’s voice echoed through the cabin.

"We’ve reached the target zone."

Looking out the window, the ground below appeared completely barren—just as expected. The actual location they needed to explore lay deeper, hidden within a heavy radiation zone. Their hoverjet wasn’t equipped to enter that area directly, at least not without risking serious system failure.

For that reason, the hoverjet began a slow, controlled descent toward the drop zone. As it hovered just above the surface, the hatch underneath slid open smoothly. One by one, six all-terrain bikes gently glided out on deployable ramps, touching down silently and ready for the mission.

These vehicles were designed specifically for zones with unstable electromagnetic fields. Unlike standard hover units, they operated with fully mechanical drive systems, making them far more resistant to radiation interference. The only drawback was the noise—loud, grinding engines that made stealth operations nearly impossible in enemy territory.

But for this particular team and their mission, stealth wasn’t a priority. In fact, being noticed by the enemy could even be beneficial—it would increase their chances of locating the enemy’s hideout.

As the hoverjet lifted back into the stormy sky, its engines roaring against the wind, Selina stood beside her bike, activating the ignition. The sound of the engine coughed to life with a sharp rumble. She glanced at the others and asked,

"Anyone got an investigation-type skill?"

It was a crucial question. The radiation zone ahead covered a wide, uncharted expanse. Their target could be buried anywhere beneath that toxic landscape—possibly even hidden underground. Without some kind of tracking or detection ability, they could waste hours, even days, searching blind.

She already knew Dalin and Victor’s Sparks, and unfortunately, her own Spark set didn’t include anything remotely related to reconnaissance or perception. That left only the three players from Shelter City 8.

Fortunately, Evangeline responded positively.

"I have one," she said calmly. "I can detect vibrations up to 100 meters around me, including up to 20 meters underground."

"Does it work in the rain as well?" Selina asked. Seeing Evangeline nod, she said, "Good, you take point."

With that, all the engines roared as the team plunged deeper into the hazardous zone.
