Chapter 65 - Alternative theories

Lady Persephone picked her summoning bell between her fingers and rang it up. Less than a second followed before a new knock came from the door.

"Come inside," declared the Lady.

The silhouette of Katherine appeared through the crack she'd made upon opening it, "You've summoned me, my Lady," she bowed.

"I'd like you to escort Arabella back to her room but stay with her for the rest of the night. Someone else will be sent at the end of your shift to take over,"

"Of course," Katherine bowed again then, with her arm and a warm smile, she invited Arabella to follow her.

As soon as the two women had left the room, Persephone opened the balcony doors and made her way outside.

Silas remained still for an instant but quickly walking in her tracks. Mother and son gazed into the night, breathing the fresh air it brought along.

Although watching the slow traveling of stars through the sky in silence by her side was never Silas' goal.

After a deep breath, he finally spilled his thoughts, "I hear you had confined Arabella to her room when the two of you met, the night before," he paused momentarily before adding, "I am sure your stance hasn't changed so, was it to punish her?"

Lady Persephone too inhaled deeply, dreamy eyes on the far away horizon, "It was for both of your sakes,"

In response, Silas cleared his throat, "I am sure it was,"

A stronger breeze blew by and breathed life through Persephone's hair. The long sheet of dark satin flowed freely as she remained completely quiet.

"She said your blood broke the spell," she practically whispered.

"It did," he said simply.

"Throughout all those years, we'd allowed the doctors to conduct experiments on your blood, I must say, I am glad they never tested it on magic," Persephone brought her gaze further down at the gardens beneath them.

"No, I can't imagine it would have turned out well for me,"

"I want more details, Silas," a little firmer and more demanding than her usual, she slightly turned towards him but never met his eyes, "All I've truly gotten so far is gossip and the girl's words aren't a viable source considering she was the one under the influence of the spell,"

"As you've probably heard, she was heading towards the gates. She said she couldn't remember a thing besides a strange need to leave the premises. I found her walking out before sunrise, under the rain," Silas too glanced at the darkened gardens, "She paid me no mind when I questioned her, and simply walked around me. Yuniper extract did nothing and thus I suspected she was the target and not the victim of collateral damage," he exhaled, "Morgana confirmed it,"

"Yes, the conversation between you and Morgana is something I've heard with my own ears,"

Silas noted the way his mother's grip around the balcony railings had tightened, "If a girl such as her has managed to make enemies, then what can be said about us?"

"Do you regret taking her in?"

"I made a vow and...," the Lady seemed to ponder her next words, but in the end, gave a simple answer, "No I do not regret it,"

"But this is the first time one of our human asylum seekers is targeted in such a manner," he too gripped the silver railing that only reached as high as his waist.

"Well, she is the first human noble we take in," Persephone finally looked him in the eyes, a faint smile on her, "She didn't exactly leave nobody behind her, she left royalty. There will surely be consequences to her actions down the line,"

"Do you suspect them to be behind this?"

"It wouldn't exactly be a direct violation of the treaty since it would mean they used a witch to conduct their dirty business," she turned around and went back inside her room.

Silas waited a moment before following her, "It wouldn't surprise me. Humans have used witches against their own people before," he faced his mother as she sat at the edge of the bed.

"The real question is, how did they reach her? You know only a few select witches have the power to cast spells from a long distance and Morgana said nothing about that,"

"No, on the contrary, she mentioned it being an intricate spell but bot on the powerful side," he said.

"That would mean, that our dear Arabella came into close contact with the caster," eyes ahead, Persephone gave the impression of sinking deeper into her own contemplation as she barely blinked throughout her sentence.

"In KasselMoon, perhaps. The shortest path to Kallum's shop would be through the hub,"

"I'd rather think of that possibility...," she trailed off momentarily, "The other alternative leaves me less indifferent than your theory,"

Indeed, the second alternative in question would mean that someone under their roof pulled the strings or, at the very least, helped execute such a machiavellian scheme.

Persephone would rather not doubt her own people, but was also well aware that that ship might have already sailed.

The time was for speculation, but it was better to leave no rock unturned when looking for someone to shift the blame onto.

"No, the idea does not please me either," Silas turned around and started walking towards the door.

"Keep an eye out," she said as he'd been about to cross the threshold.

His feet lead him straight towards Arabella's room.

However, upon nearing it, he halted in place and listened in from the distance.

To her voice and to Katherine's as both had engaged in a back and forth about a topic that was most interesting for him.
