Chapter 39: Chapter 39 - YoChat...

Maya stepped closer and hugged Lucas tightly. Her body pressed fully against his, her soft chest against his own, and her breath warm and close to his ear.

Lucas froze. There was something off about this hug. Warm, yes, but something else lingered—a feeling that sent shivers down his spine. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

"I-I missed you too, Mom," Lucas said softly, trying to keep his composure.

But Maya didn’t let go immediately. Her hands instead moved gently across Lucas’s back, stroking him softly as if trying to soothe him—or perhaps, something else.

Lucas felt his body tense up. "Mom... can we talk in the living room instead? I... I’m tired."

Maya finally released him slowly, though her face remained uncomfortably close to his. The faint smile on her lips was visible under the living room’s dim light.

"Of course, Lucas. Let’s sit down."

---

Lucas sat on the sofa while Maya prepared two cups of warm tea in the kitchen. He massaged his temples, trying to process what had just happened. Something felt wrong, but every time he tried to think about it deeply, his mind felt cloudy.

Soon after, Maya returned with a tray holding two cups of tea. She sat beside Lucas—too close for comfort.

"Drink up, Lucas. You must be tired," Maya said as she handed him a cup.

Lucas took it with slightly trembling hands. "Thank you, Mom."

Maya gazed at Lucas with a soft smile, but there was a mischievous glint in her eyes. She sipped her tea slowly, then stared at the young man beside her with an intense look.

"You’ve grown so much, Lucas. More mature... more handsome," she said softly, almost in a whisper.

Lucas swallowed hard. "U-uh... thank you."

Maya chuckled lightly, her voice echoing in the silent living room. She crossed her legs slowly, prompting Lucas to reflexively avert his gaze.

Trying to ease the awkward atmosphere, Lucas spoke up. "A-actually, it’s been a while since I had your cooking. What’s for dinner?"

Maya froze briefly before dramatically smacking her forehead. "Oh no! I completely forgot to go grocery shopping today!" She stood up swiftly, grabbing her small purse hanging on the chair’s backrest.

"I’ll run out for a bit to grab some groceries. You can rest here, or if you want, you can put your stuff away in your room," Maya said with a sweet smile.

Lucas nodded awkwardly. "Alright, Mom. Be careful out there."

But before Maya fully turned toward the door, she paused at the edge of the living room. With one hand on her hip, she looked back at Lucas over her shoulder with a sly smile.

"Oh, Lucas... It’s been a long time since I’ve seen tissues in the trash can of a boy’s room in this house."

Lucas’s face turned crimson red, like a ripe tomato. His mouth opened, but no words came out. He could only stare at Maya with wide eyes.

Maya laughed softly before finally walking out the door, leaving Lucas frozen on the sofa, his face buried in shame.

"Oh God... What did I just hear?!" Lucas muttered, covering his face with both hands.

Outside, the sound of Maya’s car engine faded into the distance, while inside, Lucas continued wrestling with overwhelming embarrassment.

---

Lucas picked up his backpack and headed to the room where he had once spent so many tissues.

As he entered his room, he placed his bag in the corner and let out a long sigh. His eyes scanned the familiar space filled with teenage memories. In the corner, he spotted a stack of old comics and posters of bands he once idolized. A faint smile appeared on his lips.

He walked over and stood in front of the mirror, staring blankly at his reflection. His face flushed every time his mind replayed the brief moments with Maya—the hug that was too tight, the smile that was too soft, and the gaze that seemed to pierce into his soul.

His face grew even redder as memories of his teenage "creativity" surfaced. There was a time he had even stolen one of Maya’s used undergarments... just to... well... inhale its scent while performing his tissue rituals.

"Oh God, Lucas," he muttered, covering his face with both hands. "You were such a freak back then."

Turning away from the mirror, he flopped onto his bed, hands still covering his face as if trying to erase the embarrassment etched into his soul.

Lucas took a deep breath, trying to calm his rapidly beating heart. But the more he tried to clear his mind, the clearer Maya’s soft smile became in his thoughts.

"She’s my stepmom... She’s my dad’s wife... I shouldn’t be thinking like this."

Lucas tried to shake off all the weird thoughts spinning in his head. With a heavy sigh, he decided to head back downstairs to the living room. His legs felt wobbly as they hit the first step, but he forced himself to keep moving.

When he reached the living room, his eyes immediately landed on a phone lying on the couch. His brows furrowed. It wasn’t his—his phone was still in his pocket. Slowly, Lucas picked it up and immediately recognized it: Maya’s phone.

"She forgot her phone?" Lucas muttered under his breath.

His hands trembled as he held it. He knew unlocking someone else’s phone without permission was a serious invasion of privacy. But that little crooked voice in the back of his head started whispering:

"If this is to prove Maya’s not cheating... then it’s not really wrong, right?"

Lucas swallowed hard. He knew he was just trying to justify himself, but his thumb was already moving. He pressed it against the phone screen.

[Unlock Touch (LV.1) successfully activated.]

The screen lit up and unlocked without resistance. Lucas’s heart pounded in his chest, cold sweat prickling his forehead. His eyes immediately locked onto a familiar app on the home screen: YoChat.

His fingers shook as he tapped the app icon. As the app loaded, a recent conversation popped up right at the top.

For a brief moment, it felt like Lucas’s heart stopped beating.

With shaky breaths, he tapped on the chat. The messages loaded, and his eyes went wide with disbelief.

"No way... this can’t be..."
